Kyle was getting a bit tired from dancing as well, so he was relieved when Amelia suggested that they sit down for a while. He enjoyed talking with her, and it was becoming increasingly difficult to continue their conversation while they were dancing. But as they discussed the vampire who had gotten away, he hesitated. The girl had not only gotten away from him, he'd pretty much let it happen. He'd been taken in by her youth and apparent innocence, and allowed it to distract him from what he should have done. Instead of slaying her on the spot, he'd held back. And that delay had caused her to escape. "Well, the truth is, I didn't actually fight that one. She acted all innocent and helpless, so I allowed myself to underestimate how dangerous she could be. She ran off without a fight. To tell the truth, she;s the one I'm looking for, because anyone she kills from this point on... it's practically my fault." Amelia looked confusingly at Kyle as they found a private table that was empty. Amelia slipped into a seat and tried to put her thoughts together. "She must have been quite convincing. If I may, what did she say to fool you?"

Kyle sighed heavily and dropped his head down on the table. Ever since his encounter with the child vampire, she had haunted his dreams. All he could think about were the people she had probably killed since she ran away from him. How many had there been? Three? Five? Ten? Or more?
"It wasn't what she said, exactly," he said at last. "It was more... what she was. She was a child. Probably not more than 13 or 14. She was newly turned, she hadn't even killed yet. She was scared and confused... she didn't even know what she was yet. Or... maybe it was all just an act she put on. I don't know. I had these crazy thoughts of maybe bringing her into the ministry, maybe they could have started her on a diet of pig's blood or something--I've heard of vampires surviving on pig's blood--but then she distracted me and ran off..."

"Well, perhaps there's still time to find her. If she's new, then maybe we can ween her quickly." She hadn't meant to we, she didn't include herself in that scenario. But she wondered if he had even noticed. If he hadn't her correcting herself would only make it more obvious that he flustered her somewhat. She continued before her could respond. "But whatever the case, you can't blame yourself. You can't stop them all, no matter how hard you try. And who knows, maybe she's still hiding out somewhere, confused. We can't be sure until she's found." There was that damn 'we' again!
She looked sorrowfully at him. He looked rather upset by this, perhaps they had better change the subject to something more pleasant before he decided to go and find the child vampire that very moment. Touching his hand lightly in comfort she asked, "Have you been to the Moving Pictures Theatre yet? I heard it was...rather interesting. I haven't been since it opened."

Kyle sighed. "You're right, of course. I just wish I hadn't hesitated. As soon as I knew what she was, I should have killed her right then. She hadn't fed yet, so she didn't have her full strength. I could have slain her without her even knowing what was happening. But I let myself get distracted by her youth." He shook his head. "Who would make a vampire of a little child, anyway?"
Ultimately, however, she was right. He couldn't blame himself for every vampire who was still out there, killing. Sometimes they got away; that was just how the job went sometimes. He couldn't dwell on it; after all, look at how many he had killed. He'd done more good than harm, after all was said and done.
Relieved for the change of subject, he smiled. "No, I haven't had occasion to check that out yet," he said. "I've heard about it, though... it sounds like a very unique experience. They say no two films are the same."

"Yes, I've heard that too. but strangely enough, I've not spoken to one person who's actually gone. Everyone has just heard it was fun. I'm wondering if it's not just the publicity that's been spreading the word, and not the actual experience." Of course, Amelia was generally skeptical until she encountered things first hand. And she tended to lean toward the negative side of things when there was no factual evidence to go on. She enjoyed her facts.

Kyle laughed. "Actually, you know, you're right," he said with a laugh. "I don't know anyone who's been there, either. Maybe it's just some strange kind of propaganda that's being spread around... I can't even remember where I heard it now." He shook his head. "Well, maybe we should check it out sometime. What do you think? I mean, after all, we ought to investigate these claims, don't you agree?" He kept his voice very serious, almost professional in tone. But the smile was still evident on his face.

"Oh yes," she agreed in a serious tone to match his, "I think we ought to." She poorly hid a smile. "Just to prove the stories wrong or right." She laughed then, letting her hair fall over her shoulders and into her face slightly. She could use a comb at the moment, all of her moving on the dance floor had made it look rather shabby.

"Well, then," Kyle said, still smiling. "I'll have to check my busy schedule, and see when I'm available. When's good for you? You know, for important research, of course." He was careful not to refer to it as a date, just in case that wasn't what she had in mind.

She made a serious face. "Oh, of course. Research," she said in the most serious tone she could manage while still laughing. "Let's see...I work every day but Sundays, which is why I'm here tonight." She could stay out later when she didn't have to be up for work by five in the morning the next day. "But I get out of the office by seven usually. I suppose your hours are slightly more flexible than mine?" She laughed again.

Kyle chuckled. "Well, I don't know about that. The thing about being self-employed is that most of the time, the boss is a slave-driver. Mine is a right bastard sometimes." He winked at her, then added. "Yeah, usually, I can work around my schedule. It's just that I so rarely do it. I really do need to take more time out to relax and have fun. Not that this would be fun, of course. It's serious business."
Taking a sip from his drink, he regarded her casually. She was beautiful and intriguing, but he could also sense that she was a woman who was serious about her work. He could see himself falling for her, but was she too serious to let him in? What did he want, anyway? He wasn't sure he was really interested in a serious relationship... but if he was, it would be with someone like her.
Looking away quickly, so she wouldn't think he was a stalker or something, he said, "Would you like to do it next Saturday, then?"

Amelia's cheeks flushed, having almost nothing to do with her previous dancing. She hadn't been on a date in ages. She couldn't even remember who her last date was with. And even though Kyle was being very cute in avoiding the term 'date' she knew that was what he was getting at. She nodded happily. "It's a date." She watched him to gauge his response at her use of the word, smiling broadly like an idiot.

Kyle nodded, breathing a sigh of relief at the word "date." So she didn't have a problem with the idea. That was encouraging. He didn't know what he hoped from this, but he was definitely willing to see where it went. She was definitely worth the effort, of that much he was sure. "It's a date," he repeated.
Taking a sip from his drink, he looked around the room, unconsciously scanning the place for signs of trouble. "Well, I don't know about you, but I don't see any vampires," he remarked.

She watched his face; he was relieved. She wondered what he might have been thinking before she plainly said what he had been insinuating. At least he didn't look mortified at her use of the word. That would have been confidence shattering.
She looked around the room as he did, though she didn't know what to be looking for. If there was anything in particular she would have noticed it. A pretty girl looking for him. A devilish vampire cowering from him. The possibilities were endless. But luckily she didn't need to think of any more as he stated his reason. "Neither do I. You must have scared them all away." She grinned at him. "But now what are you going to do with the rest of your evening?"

Kyle laughed. "Well, to be honest, I'm not all that disappointed. I'm enjoying my evening just fine right now. Slaying vampires... all it really gets you is a mouth full of dust. It's over so quickly it's hardly even satisfying. But a pleasant conversation with a beautiful woman, that's something worth savoring."
He looked at her uncertainly. Had he gone too far in complimenting her?

"Shall I find you one then?" she teased. Brushing her hair back over her shoulder, she couldn't help but grin. He had called her beautiful. She certainly hadn't felt beautiful lately. She hardly got dressed up for work anymore and she was beginning to suspect the men in the office thought of her more as one of the guys than a lady. And at the moment she knew she looked far less attractive than when she had left her home. She hadn't brought any makeup to retouch her face and her hair was stringy and messy. Now that she thought of it, she wished she hadn't met Kyle here tonight. She must look a fright. But she knew she could make herself look better for their date next Saturday.

Kyle smiled. "Humble, too. I like that." He laughed and shook his head. "I hope you don't think I'm trying to pick you up or anything. I'm not really like that. In fact, I'm a little embarrassed to see how completely unsmooth I am. I really have been too consumed with my work."
He hesitated for a minute, regarding her. She seemed like the type who, if he said the wrong thing, would be likely to head for the hills. Not that he thought she was uptight. But she was a serious, intelligent woman, and she deserved respect. He had a feeling that, in her job, she commanded respect easily.
"Anyway, I'm just having a nice time talking with you, that's all," he finished lamely.

She laughed with him, which was easy as she was having a wonderful time. "And here I was flattering myself thinking you fancied me. Silly Amelia," she grinned. She was enjoying their conversation too. It was a perfect blend of serious talk and joking. Nothing too deep or too superficial. Simply a wonderful first encounter chat. That thought then led her to think about future chats they might have. And she wondered if they would be seemingly as compatible when they went to the theatre the following weekend. It might just be the atmosphere that made her find him so enjoyable.
"Well I suppose I won't let on that I may fancy you then. Since we're not picking anyone up." She stressed the word may, though her meaning was clear enough.

Kyle laughed. "Touché," he said. Nervously, he began to rub the back of his neck. "Merlin, I really am rusty at this, aren't I?" He sighed. "I do like you. Quite a bit, actually. I'm just trying to say... I don't want you to think that I have any expectations or anything, other than the pleasure of a nice, intelligent conversation. Well... intelligent on your part, anyway. I'm not so sure about me." He laughed slightly. "Damn, I need a drink. Maybe then I'll stop sticking my foot in my mouth. Do you want anything?"

"That's alright. We'll just blame your clear lack of social skills on dealing with dark creatures for so long." She laughed, her eyes sparkling in the light from the disco ball that hung over the dance floor just past the lounge. "Don't worry though. I get that way sometimes when I've been working too much. It's always lovely when your friends tell you to bugger off because you forgot what a joke sounded like."
"I'd be fine with just a water. I wouldn't want to get drunk and end up having to have you take me home." She laughed again, this time at herself. She could never be considered a drunk, mostly because she rarely drank a sip of alcohol. But when she did drink, she tended to forget herself and would drink far past her limit. But it had been years since an incident like that. Never the less, it wasn't good to push things.

Kyle was not surprised that she would choose to order water, instead of something stronger. It fit perfectly with how he saw her--strong and in control. He liked that. Unfortunately, it had the curious effect of making him feel strangely out of control.
Waving a waiter over to their table, Kyle ordered a whiskey sour for himself and a water for Amelia. Then, turning back to her, he smiled. "OK, so you've heard quite a bit about me. Why don't you tell me more about yourself? What kinda of hobbies do you have, other then dancing and talking to socially awkward men in nightclubs?"
