Emmeline had a bad feeling when she woke up this morning. Today was just going to be a bad day. Her parents were out of town and she was left with the nanny. Which annoyed her to no end. She had to sneak out just to go shopping by herself. But Emmeline should never be left alone when she has things on her mind. Which is probably why she ended up here. In Knockturn Alley. And she had no idea where she was.
She started to panic. Which wasn't unusual in a situation like this. Why did she wonder off by herself? Her palms started to sweat. And she was getting dirty by leaning up against this wall. She felt the tears prick her the corners of her eyes. But she wouldn't cry, she couldn't. They, being the dirty beggars on the street, would pick her out and probably eat her. She really needed a friend right now.

Kyle routinely did patrols down Knockturn Alley, where Dark Creatures were often at work. The usual types that frequented Knockturn Alley were not too keen on his presence, but he didn't care. He wasn't afraid of them. He often found banshees, vampires, and even a rogue dementor once in a while, and he was not about to just let these things continue to walk the streets where they could harm people. Even if it was just the people of Knockturn Alley.
Today, he was secretly hoping to find some trace of the vampire girl, although, he admitted it was a bit of a stretch that she would be here. She'd last been seen in Hogsmeade, and she didn't appear to have much if any magical training, so apparation was out. Still, he hoped.
But just then he was shocked to find a young girl wandering around, looking lost and frightened. It was not the vampire child... it was a different girl. He approached her quickly. "Hi, there," he said. "Are you lost?"

Emmeline saw a tall, good-looking man approach her. He appeared to be much older and not the type to just stroll down Knockturn Alley.
"Yes sir." She muttered. "And I don't know where to go from here." She shuffled her feet and looked at the ground. This was embarrassing. She waited for him to laugh or make fun of her for being a stupid child.

Kyle smiled at the girl. "It's OK. Sometimes students accidentally wander down here, or they make a mistake while taking the Floo Network. You're just lucky I'm the first person to come up to you... I've heard some pretty scary stories of things that have happened to kids walking down here. Don't worry... I can take you back. I'm pretty much done here, anyway, I think."
He held out his hand to her. "I'm Kyle Connolley. I'm a Dark Creature Catcher. I like to patrol down here whenever I get a chance... you never know what might be lurking around here."

Emmeline shuddered when he mentioned knowing about things that have happened to students. She certainly didn't want to hear. Instead, she shook his hand in return.
"I'm Emmeline Vance. I go to Hogwarts. If you have something else you need to do down here, I'll wait here. Or better yet, I'll follow you. It's pretty scary down here, but I'd like to see a little more." Which was weird, since she was pretty much scared sh*tless. "How do you become a dark creature catcher?" See what happens when she gets to comfortable with people.

"Nice you meet you, Emmeline," said Kyle. He took a glance down the alleyway; they were standing about halfway down. "Well, I heard something about a dementor that decided to up and leave Azkaban, but I don't think it's down here. It's actually a little lighter down here today than usual, and it wouldn't be light at all if the dementor is still here. Anyway, you wouldn't want to be around while I tried to fight a dementor."
he started toward the entrance way leading back to Diagon Alley. "Well, Defense Against the Dark Arts was my best subject in school, and I started out at the Ministry for a while in the Department for Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. But you know, they don't just go after dark creatures... they go after all of them, pretty much. I didn't like working there, so I went off on my own." He chuckled to himself, realizing how odd it was that he'd just told his life story to this girl.

When he mentioned the dementor down in the alley, she shuddered again and checked her surroundings. It was amazing how these people differed from those in Diagon Alley. These people wore rags and sold stuff right from their robes. And they acted as if a dementor floating around was normal. She shuddered again. She was ready to leave.
"So, do you need, like a special licenses do hunt creatures or what?" She had never heard of a creature hunter not working the ministry.

Kyle chuckled. She was a curious girl, to be sure. "No, not really," he said. "I did have to get certified when I worked at the Ministry... they have rules for everything there. But to do it on my own as a freelancer... well, they just don't really care what I do, but they do like me to keep a record of Dark Creature activity... what I find, what I get rid of... stuff like that."
A scraggly-looking old man approached them just then, bumping into Emmeline. Kyle could tell that it was done on purpose. "Hey! Watch it!" Kyle yelled at him. "I suggest you just move on, old man!"
He pulled Emmeline away from the old man. "Are you OK? He didn't hurt you, did he?"

Emmeline rubbed her shoulder. That bump was kinda rough to be an accident. She patted down her pockets and made sure everything on her was safe. "I think I'm good. I have wand and all my money. That's the second time that has happened. I think it might have been the same person."
She checker her shoulder. A bruise was coming in. Emmeline narrowed her eyes. She was in her right mind to run and hex that man. She sighed. Stupid floo network....

Kyle shook his head. "That kind of thing happens down here all the time. You're actually pretty lucky it wasn't anything worse than that. See, that's old Hank. I've seen him before. He was trying to pick your pocket, but he has arthritis in his hands and can't grip anything. But he has been known to hurt people when he runs into them too hard like that. He knocked over one of the hangs that usually walks around here, and nearly caused a fight."
They were just passing Borgin & Burke's when he noticed a gang of six or seven shadowy figures lurking near the wall up ahead. Immediately, he stopped walking. "OK, don't move," he said. "This could be trouble. I think that might be the Dragon Brothers. They don't like me much."

Emmeline wanted to laugh. Old Hank? That was funny. He knew the old guy with arthritis that picked people's pockets. But the laugh died in her throat when he mentioned Dragon Brothers. Of course she meets the good guy with a bad reputation in a bad neighborhood. Emmeline wanted to faint.
"Exactly who are they?"

Kyle frowned. "As you can probably imagine, someone like me isn't exactly popular among the people of Knockturn Alley. The Dragon Brothers are really just a bunch of thugs... they're not even brothers... but I caught them dealing in baby dragon eggs. They steal dragon eggs and sell them to people who raise them for illegal dragon fights." He ducked down. "I found out about their business and broke it up... they even did some time in Azkaban for it. They just got out a few weeks ago... I wonder if they're up to their old tricks..."
He glanced at the three men again, then back at the entrance to Borgin & Burke's. The men were whispering to themselves and looking over at him. "I thihnk we're going to have to make a quick getaway. How did you get here, anyway?"
