Amelia was feeling lonely now that she had purchased a large house just outside of London and had no one living there with her. But never one to feel sorry for herself, she decided to do something about it. Grabbing her coin purse and light cloak, she apparated to the Magical Menagerie in Hogsmeade. She would find herself a new familiar. She hadn't had one since she was a girl. She had never owned an owl, simply using the ones in the public owlery. And although they were quite common, she was never one for cats. They made her sneeze and they always seemed to think they were better than she was. No, she wouldn't be able to simply run out and grab a pet. She would have to sho, and think about it. What kind of animal would make for good company? Which would not need a lot of attention while she was busy at the Ministry? There were plenty of things to consider.

Jude was feeling a bit bored, so he was walking idly through Hogsmeade. He didn't really have a plan in mind as he stepped into the magical menagerie. He didn't exactly need a pet or anything, but it seemed like a good enough place to shop as any. Especially when he saw the cute blonde already inside. He broke into a grin as he walked up near her. "You look like you're contemplating the fate of the world," he commented.

"Well it would be the world to one these little guys." She turned away from the toads she was looking at to see who she was speaking with. She didn't know him. "What sort of pet are you looking for? Or do you already have a familiar?" She could use any imput at this point.

"Yeah, I suppose you're right," he agreed. "You wouldn't want to make the wrong choice and get something you couldn't take proper care of." He shrugged. "I just have an owl, myself. Although, I used to have a pet turtle. I guess that's not exactly the kind of thing you're lookinf for, though, is it? But hey... they're pretty easy to take care of. And they're more affectionate than you'd think."

"How could a turtle be affectionate? Don't they just kind of sit there?" She didn't think she would want a turtle. And the toads she had been looking at didn't seem right for her either. Their bulging eyes made them all look in shock. She wouldn't be able to stand that. She walked further down the aisle, then walked back up the other one. There were cats here, and on the opposite side of the aisle were rats. That just seemed cruel to Amelia.

"You know, I always thought that, too," Jude admitted. "I mean, turtles don't do much, right? But I was surprised. Mine... I called him Pokey... He was really smart. He knew his name and would respond to the sound of my voice. And sometimes he was positively cuddly." He laughed. "I know, that sounds weird, huh? Well, anyway, I don't think turtles are right for everyone. What kind of animals do you like? Are you looking for something small or large?"

She continued to look at the animals, even though she was talking to this man. From the moment he walked in she thought he would be trouble, now she was just waiting for it to start. Life in the Magical Law Enforcement would make anyone paranoid. But her sense of social decency screamed at her to be polite. "It's not so much the size of the pet, as it is the self sufficiency. I'm away a lot, some times for long periods of time. I need something that wont be starved for attention, but still comforting when I'm home."

"Hmmm," Jude replied, thinking. "Well, cats are good for that. If you like cats, that is. They're very independent creatures. Um... Rats are independent, too, but not so very comforting. I mean, I've heard that they can be affectionate, but I've never seen it. My cousin had a pet rat, and he bit my finger once." He shrugged and stuffed his hands in his pockets as he took a few steps around, looking. "How do you feel about ferrets?"

"Oh no, I despise cats. Horrible little creatures. They know too much." She heard the words come out of her mouth and instantly knew she sounded like a loon. She turned back around and looked at the man. "Well...what I mean is...really it's just that - I think cats are probably not for me. Since apparently I lash out at the mention of them." She laughed oddly, as if she were nervous, but she wasn't. Her cheeks flushed and she turned back to look at the animals.
"I've never really thought about a ferret. Have you known someone with one, or are you just throwing out any old creature?"

"Well, I knew this crazy girl who used to breed them, actually," Jude admitted. "She was a strange girl. Always had 10 or 12 of them around, and there was one that went with her everywhere. They seemed like interesting creatures... smart and self-reliant, but capable of being cuddly, if that's what you wanted. Plus, you wouldn't have to worry about spiders and cockroaches in your house." He laughed slightly. "By the way, I don't think we've been properly introduced. I'm Jude." He stuck out his hand for her to shake.

"Amelia," she replied, shaking his hand politely. "So Jude, if you're not currently in the market for a pet, and you don't already have one, why have you spent so much time in here?" She eyed him knowingly, a faint smile crossing her lips.

Jude broke into an embarrassed grin. "Ah, well, you caught me. I was just wandering around, looking for something to do, and I saw you in here, so I thought I'd come in an talk with you." He raised his hands defensively. "But I swear, I wasn't trying to pick you up or anything. I was just being friendly. I like getting to know new people." Especially pretty blondes, he thought to himself.

"Well, I suppose I can't condemn a man for trying to make friends." She smiled sweetly at him. "But why come in here? Couldn't you find someone who might have something in common with you?" Thus far he seemed to be grasping at straws. And the conversation really was just him naming animals. But she had to give him credit for trying.

Jude shrugged. "Hey, I like animals. Just cause I don't happen to be in the market for one right now, doesn't mean I can't look around, right?" He smiled slightly, still looking a bit embarrassed. "But I can go, if you want."

"Oh, no. I didn't mean to run you off," she said, gently grabbing his upper arm. "I'm sorry. Sometimes I just don't know when I'm being rude." Her cheeks flushed when she realized she was still touching this man she didn't know. She pulled back her hand and ran it through her hair, turning back slightly to the animals.
