Transfiguration, Class 1

[Lily Evans]

Lily watched all of this quietly, shaking her head. She wasn't very fond of Sirius, that was true. She didn't know why Kris had forgiven him so quickly. But she also felt bad about the other girl. It was obvious, the way she looked away and began drawing on her parchment, that she was uncomfortable and embarrassed about the whole situation. Lily looked at her, feeling bad for her. After a minute, she spoke up.

"Hey, um... Amy?" she said in a quiet voice. "Look, no one blames you, OK? It wasn't your fault. You didn't know. You were just talking to him... he was the one who should have known better."

[Sirius Black]

Sirius smiled at her. "Well, I could maybe help you out, if you want. This stuff just seems to come naturally to me. It's not really that hard once you get used to it."

[Kris Lupin]

"Ok." Kris smiled, she bit her lower lip and she continued to flip through the book boredly.

[Amy Icefire]

She knew that Lily was entirely right, but Amy still felt bad about the situation. She usually was so much better at reading people. Amy softly sighed and then decided that even though she and Sirius both should have known better, what was done was done. She would just learn from her mistake. Amy slowly stopped sketching and turned to Lily, "Thanks."

[Lily Evans]

Lily smiled at her. "You're welcome," she replied. "Us redheads have to stick together, you know what I mean?" She tugged on her red curls. "Anyway, you seem like a nice enough person. Don't worry too much about what happened."

[Amy Icefire]

Amy softly laughed as she ran her hand through her own hair. "Yeah, yeah we do. Thanks...I just have a guilty conscious sometimes." She shook her head a little as if trying to get the thought out of her head. She leaned back a little and then turned to Lily again. "So what do you think we'll be learning about today?"

[Lily Evans]

Lily smiled, welcoming the change of subject. She generally preferred not to talk about Sirius Black any longer than was absolutely necessary. She glanced up at the professor, wondering silently what had happened to Professor Domino. He was Natalie's uncle, so it seemed strange not to see him in the front of the room. "I don't know," she said honestly. "Maybe a review? I just hope it's something fun."

[Amy Icefire]

Amy nodded her head in agreement, "I sure hope so. I can't remember any of the stuff I read over the summer." She had procrastinated her entire summer and finally decided to cram all of her readings into the last two days of vacation. She looked around the room in wonder of where everyone else was. At least the first week of the year was normally easy.

[Severus Snape]

Severus could of rolled his eyes, such petty problems. It made him sick to hear such drivel. Hand kissing? yuck, how stupidly romantic. He sank deeper into his chair and crossed out two words of the spell he was fiddling with, perhaps a half word combination would work better than two whole words, besides wizards are fond of simple spells or attacks.

While Kris was looking through her book, Sirius leaned way back in his chair and stuck his feet out into the aisle. "I'm bored," he declared loudly. "I hope we can start class soon."

Lily laughed. "I guess I'm a bit of a nerd... I read everything twice, just to be sure I wouldn't forget it. I read it right at the beginning of the summer, then I re-read it at the end." She smiled sheepishly. "The second time, I even took notes and highlighted stuff. Is that dorky, or what? But I can't help it. I really want to do well, because I'm the first witch in my family."

[Amy Icefire]

Amy laughed at Lily, in good humor of course and jokingly replied, "Wow, I really need to hang out with you more often. Maybe some of your work ethic will rub off on me. Although, by now, I think I may be a lost cause." Amy thought it was interesting that she was the first witch in her family and that she readily admitted to the fact that she was of muggle blood in a time where the wizarding community was still uncertain about the inclusion of muggles. Amy deeply respected that. "First witch, huh? That's really impressive. And if your reputation properly precedes you, a very good witch at that. But then again...now I see why."

[Lily Evans]

Lily shrugged. "I know it's kind of dumb. But it's important to me to do well at this, you know? And anything that's worth doing is worth working for. That's just what I believe, anyway."

She glanced down at her book, already heavily marked up with notes and highlights. "I know a lot of people don't like people who aren't purebloods. I'm kind of fighting against what people think of muggleborn witches and wizards. But personally, I don't think it should matter. What do you think?"

Lily knew the topic was controversial, but she wanted to feel her out and see what she thought. Sometimes she felt like people wanted her to fail.

[Amy Icefire]

Amy shook her head, “It’s not dumb at all! I know what you mean. I’m just…well lazy I suppose when it comes to school work.” She took a glance at Lily’s book and smiled, “I don’t know how you do it.” All she had done all summer was play Quidditch and play with her brother’s children. Suddenly, she wished she had read over the summer. It would’ve made this year so much easier.

“Honestly, I think people are dumb. I um…” She looked at Lily for a moment. She didn’t really know why she was about to tell her this. “I wasn’t raised by my magical parents. I actually didn’t even know I was a witch until I was accepted at Hogwarts. I think it’s ridiculous that people are judged by their blood.” Amy shrugged, “In all honesty, I should be hated just as much as people who are of muggle blood, but I’m not…why? Because of my pureblood family whom I don’t even know? Life’s complicated enough. We don’t need even more unnecessary hatred over something like that. Plus, everyone knows the wizarding community would have died out if we didn’t include muggles.”

Amy knew it was dangerous to be saying things like that out loud. Many wizards, even good wizards, were still against those of muggle blood, but she had realized that she didn’t care about what others thought about her anymore.

[Lily Evans]

Lily smiled. She had known Amy would be cool. "When I first got my Hogwarts letter, I was shocked. I didn't even know that things like magic existed. But I realized, I'd been doing magic accidentally my whole life. A lot of people thought I was weird then, too. So I didn't fit in in the muggle world, and now it seems there are some people who say I don't belong here, either. But it's ridiculous, isn't it? We all have magical powers; why should anyone be treated differently from anyone else?"

She shrugged. "Honestly, I really don't care what anyone else thinks about me, either. If people are going to decide they don't like me just because my parents weren't wizards, then it's their loss."

[Amy Icefire]

"Good." Amy firmly replied. "And you're right...it is their loss. They'll see. It'll be a wake up call when they all realize that you're the smartest witch in your year, which I'm sure you are. And for the record, I know you belong here. I'm sure you'll be a famous witch one day." Amy really meant what she said, little did she know how true that would be.

[Lily Evans]

Lily blushed. "Thanks. I don't know if I'd say I'm the best in my year. And I don't know about being famous. But I think I'm pretty good. I always get high grades, anyway. I just wish more people would judge other people by their abilities and their talents, and not silly things like which family they're from, or how pure their blood is. But I don't suppose that will happen anytime soon, even though Professor Dumbledore would like it to. I heard him arguing with someone about it once."

[Amy Icefire]

Amy laughed, "I have faith in you. Believe me, if I'm passing with the effort I put into my classes, you must be passing with flying colors." She listened to the rest of what Lily said and couldn't agree more. "It's true. Hopefully someday everyone will realize what's really important. Things would be a lot different around here, to say the least. But you're right...as least someone's got it right. Dumbledore. Now that man's a genius."

[Lily Evans]

Lily smiled. "He is!" she agreed. "When I first met him, I was so intimidated by him. He looks exactly like what you'd expect a wizard to look like, in muggle books and stuff. You know, the long white beard and hair and all that. But he's so nice! After I got my Hogwarts letter, he actually came to our house to visit with us and answer some of my parents' questions. If you ask me, there's no one better to run Hogwarts than Dumbledore."

[Amy Icefire]

Amy nodded her head. "He's the one that helped me reunite with my brother. He treats each and every student like his own, you know? I agree, I'd be afraid if anyone else were in charge of this school." She looked around and noticed that no one else had entered the classroom in quite some time. "I wonder what we're waiting for," she softly said. The weather outside was perfect. She couldn't wait to get out of class and go flying or something.
