Zander,
I have received your message. While I have no wish to start a pack war with your pack (at least, not right now), I am afraid that I cannot return Ashura to you at this time. I trust that you will take care of Dawn and make sure she is unhurt until such time as I am ready to make an exchange. I will likewise make sure Ashura is unharmed until her brother arrives. It was never my plan to harm Ashura; she is only a means to draw her brother out of hiding. Once I have my revenge for the death of my mate, we can arrange a peaceful trade of our pack members. But not before.
Sincerely,
Gretchen Thomas

Zander saw the owl as it tapped on the glass and he let it inside. He removed the note and read it silently. As he saw that Gretchen was still refusing to release Ashura until Sully arrived, he cursed loudly and crumpled the letter into a small wad. He didn't have a problem with keeping Dawn, but he didn't trust Gretchen to keep her promise not to hurt Ashura. Especially since nothing would hurt her more than the death of the brother she had been missing so long. Zander sat down at the table. There had to be a solution...

As Zander sat there, staring down at the note, he heard another tapping sound. He turned to the window and saw another owl. Sighing, he got up and let the bird inside. It flew over to the desk and landed next to the first one. "Oh, now what?" Zander grumbled. He sat down and untied the message from the bird's leg.

Dear Zander,
I have just received a letter from Gretchen. She says that she has Ashura and she is giving me one week to return to town and face her in a fight to the death, or she will hurt my sister. I am hoping you can help us out here, and find a way to rescue Ashura. I am prepared to come back and fight Gretchen, and hopefully I will survive, but I need to know that Ashura will be safe. Please help her. She doesn't deserve any of this.
Your friend,
Sully

Zander stared down at Sully's letter. He didn't know what to say to him. He had hoped that Gretchen would value her pack member, Dawn, above her need for revenge. Obviously, he was wrong. He sighed heavily and tried to think about what to do. Maybe he could arrange a rescue attempt... He thought about it for a while before he decided to reply to Sully's note.

Chloe walked around the house to try and find Zander. She wanted to know if he had heard anything from Gretchen. Finally she found him with a letter in hand. "Hey Zander," she said walking into the room. "Have you heard anything yet?"

Zander looked up from the letters and sighed heavily. "Yeah, I have, and it's not good. Gretchen refuses to let Ashura goeven to trade for Dawn, until Sully gets here. She's already contacted him, and he's writing to me asking for help..." He shook his head and brushed the lock of hair from his forehead. "We're going to have to try and rescue Ashura ourselves. The sooner, the better."

Chloe frowned. "I agree. I don't know how well Sully will stand a chance. If we can help in some kind of way, it could help us get Ashura. How do you suppose we go about it? We can just run into the middle of their hide out and just take her."

Zander nodded. "I think we should do it at night. The darkness may provide some cover, and there will likely be fewer people walking around the camp. There'll probably be a guard or two, but hopefully, we can do it while Gretchen is asleep, so we don't have to deal with her." He sighed. "I wish it hadn't come to this, but we can't just leave Ashura there alone. I don't even really trust that they won't hurt her. I think we'll get together a small group and go in tonight. Me, you, Pearl, Karl... maybe even Dean. I think it would do him some good to join in some team work, you know? Oh... and have you heard from David at all?"

"I don't think I really trust them that much either," said Chloe. "Well, David should be back sometime soon. He just likes to wander around. I have a feeling he'll be back in a day or two though. If you want, I could just owl him to tell him to come back. That wouldn't be a problem."

"If they'd been willing to trade for Dawn right away, then it wouldn't have been an issue. But they know we won't hurt Dawn, so they're content to just live her with us, and meanwhile, they have Ashura... I can't trust that they won't hurt her. So we have no choice... we have to try and get her out of there ourselves." He shook his head. "No, don't worry about David... we could use his help, but we're short on time. We'd better just try it without him. Skye can stay here and keep an eye on Dawn, and Remus and Kris."

Chloe gave a short nod. "I'm guessing this Gretchen woman won't stop at nothing until she gets what she wants, even if it includes someone else having one of her pack members. I don't blame you for not trusting them. I just hope that they haven't done anything to her. What night should we go? Full Moon night, or just a regular night?"

"Hmmm... well, that's the question, isn't it?" Zander said thoughtfully. "I mean, in our wolf forms, we have the added strength, but there's the possibility of losing control. Furthermore, they're werewolves, too.... but they may be more likely to be scattered during a full moon." He thought about it for a moment. "I don't know... I think it might be harder to control the situation in our wolf forms. I think we need to be able to be in control of ourselves as much as possible. We'll be able to be quieter and sneakier in human form. We'd better not do it on a full moon."

"Alright. What if we go in tomorrow or the next night. It'll give us time to slightly plan on how we're going to go in and what we're going to do," said Chloe. "We can let Karl, Dean, and Pearl know about it now I guess, then meet about it say what we're going to do in the morning?"

"I think we should do it as soon as possible... tomorrow night sounds good. I don't want Ashura thinking that we've abandoned her. Plus, I need to give an answer to Sully." Zander leaned back in his chair. "Yeah, I think we should have a pack meeting tomorrow, and tell everyone what's going on. Maybe you could even contact David and see if he can get back in time to help us out. I'm not sure where Dragos has gotten to, either... but we'll make do without him, I guess."

"I'll go and owl him now. I think he could get here in time if there maybe trouble around. When I last talked to him, he said that he was just thinking about a few things and needed time to think about them. I kinda have an idea what it's about, but I'm sure that he'll be back no problem," said Chloe. "I haven't even seen nor heard from Dragos. I guess he's off on his own somewhere," she said with a slight shrug.

"OK, great," Zander said. "Thanks, Chloe." He sighed heavily. "I really don't want to start a war with Gretchen's pack, and I don't want Ashura or Dawn to be caught in the middle of this mess, but we have to do something. We can't just leave the poor girl there. From what I understand, Gretchen and her pack are pretty nasty. If we just sit back and let them keep Ashura as long as they want... well, that's as good as handing over our territory to them." He was surprised to realize that he was starting to think like a wolf.
