Madelyn was so relieved to finally have an evening off from work. Since she had just found out that her brother, Trevor, was working at Hogwarts, she had invited him out to eat at the Hot Panini. Casually, she walked over to the restaurant and stepped inside. Her brother was nowhere in sight. Typical. He was always late. She stood by the door and waited for the waitress to seat her. That was when she heard the voice talking to her. "Watch out, slippery floor!" it said. She looked around and saw no one.
"Who said that?" she asked.
"Slippery floor," said the voice again.
Maddie kept looking, and suddenly she saw it--a little cardboard cut-out standing in the corner, in the shape of a cat wearing a butler's outfit. "Slippery floor!"
"OK, OK, I'll be careful," Maddie mumbled, rolling her eyes. She really was sick of hearing inanimate objects talk to her. "I hope Trevor gets here soon."

Trevor arrived at the Hot Panini, quickly running up to the door, looking for Madelyn through the glass. He had gotten caught up and completely forgotten about meeting her for lunch. He smiled when he saw her waiting near the front of the restaurant. He opened the door and walked over to where Madelyn was standing. "Hey." He grinned at her. "Sorry about the time. I got caught up grading papers and stuff." He explained, quickly. "How are you doing?" He asked her while they waited to be seated.

"Hey, Trevor," Maddie said, smiling at her brother. "I'm OK, I guess. I've just been busy with work and stuff. How are you? How's your class?"

"It's alright, I guess." Trevor shrugged. "I haven't had many classes yet, but it's still fun just to teach and all." He said, smiling. "But, all in all, I'm doing pretty good. I just feel kind of odd not knowing anyone there or anything." He looked around, checking to see if a waiter was anywhere nearby. "So, um...how's your...thing...going? Still driving you nuts or have you gotten control of it yet?" He asked her, referring to her "powers". He remembered how she had always been annoyed with everything talking to her.

"Oh, you mean, am I getting used to the idea of having inanimate objects tell me to do stuff? Uh... no. The customers at the club all call me the weird bartender who talks to herself." Maddie rolled her eyes. "Oh, by the way, when we walk to our table, watch your step. That little cut-out thing over there told me it was a slippery floor."

((We might as well just go ahead walk to the table with a random waiter. It'll save you having to log in as Becky.))
Trevor chuckled a little bit, smiling. He had always been kind of amazed by Madelyn's gift, but at the same time felt sorry that she had to endure the constant noise and annoyances the talking inanimate objects seemed to cause. He followed a waitress to a table and sat in a chair on one side of the table. "Maybe you should consider getting a new- and perhaps more beneficial- job? Something where maybe your 'gift' would help out?" He suggested.

Maddie walked slowly to the table, trying to avoid the "slippery floor" she had been warned about. She had almost made it before she slipped and fell right on her bottom. She heard giggling and looked around. She was not surprised to find that the cat cut-out thing was laughing at her. "Shut up!" she said sourly as she picked herself up. "Stupid thing." She sat down across from Trevor and smiled sheepishly. "That could be a good idea, but I have yet to figure out what kind of purpose there is in hearing these things talk. So far, they just seem to enjoy irritating me."

Trevor had watched her curiously as she slipped on the floor and then yelled at the lifeless cut-out of the cat. He had to admit, without knowing about her special powers, he could see why she seemed very strange. But he wasn't going to admit that to her. He shrugged in reply, and frowned. "Good point. But there's gotta be something that its useful for." He said, thinking hard. "Perhaps you could be some kind of ministry investigator or something where you could interrogate the objects that witnessed a crime?"

"That actually could be useful," she admitted. "It's just... I have trouble getting most people to believe in my powers. Most of them pretty much just think I'm nuts. Maybe if I could get Dumbledore or someone to vouch for me, then they'd believe me. I mean, you have a weird power, too, but at least yours other people can see. Sometimes I'm not even that sure I'm not nuts." She sighed and picked up her menu. On the cover was a little picture of a guy in a big chef's hat holding a platter of food. As she looked at it, the little chef's head turned and looked at her. "Order the fish," it said. "I don't like fish," she told it, and opened her menu quickly. "Stupid things are telling me what to order now..." she grumbled.

"C'mon, Maddie. We both know you're not nuts. You've just got a unique power that's just a little hard to control." Trevor said, picking up his menu and looking through it. "You just need to find out how to control it. These aren't diseases- they're gifts. And there's a got to be a good reason for why you have this particular one." He told her, trying to comfort her.

Maddie smiled. "Thanks, Trev. I swear, I don't know what I'd do without you." She sighed. "And you're right. There has to be a reason I have this power.... I just have to figure out what it is."

"No problem." Trevor smiled. "We just need to find out how you can learn to control your power. I guess you just have to practice and try to learn to just drain out the noises and ignore them when you don't want to hear them. That sounds like it'd be the easiest place to start." He suggested.
Feeling thirsty, he picked up his glass of water from the table and it immediately transformed into a fork. Trevor made a face and put the fork aside. "See? You're not the only one who could use some power control here..." He said with a sort of half-grin. "And for just having woken up one day and finding out that we had these, I'd say we've done pretty well. I mean, we've survived this long without going completely insane."

"Yeah, I guess. I just wish I'd explained about my powers back when I was at Hogwarts. I was always afraid that the teachers and students would think I was crazy. You and Dumbledore were the only people I could ever tell. I was just lucky that he believed me. I really should meet with him and see if he has any ideas for controlling it or using it. I've tried shutting it out and ignoring it, and that just makes it worse."

"Yeah you should. I'm sure he'll know something about it all and how to better control it." Trevor replied. He looked out the window next to them, letting his brain wander around. He turned back to Maddie after a minute and looked at her sincerely. "Hey, Maddie. Have you ever thought about going searching for mom and dad?" He asked with an uneasy expression. Having never known either of their parents, it had always been a touchy subject for the two of them. But lately, he had been thinking about them a lot and why they had just dropped them off at an orphanage when they were infants.

Madelyn frowned. "They're probably dead, right?" she said. "I mean, why else would they dump us there? I mean, yeah, I wanna know who they were, too, but... is there really a point in looking for them?" She stared down at her menu, and suddenly, the little figure in the chef's hat turned to her. "Go look for them," it said.
She looked up at Trevor. "Of course, I could be wrong..."
