Emily laughed. "I remember the first time I tried to make toast, I burned it. Luckly Vincent wasn't home, because the whole house started to get smokey. But after that, I was more careful with it, and I don't burn it, as long as I remember how long it's been in there."

"Yeah, I'd probably be better off with one of those muggle toast makers. I tried to use magic and I over did it. I always do. Oh, well, it doesn't matter. We can have Bitsy do the work for us. But tell me," Isabella said, taking a sip of her tea. "Are you OK otherwise? I mean, other than not being able to have a baby? You know, Voltaire and I were thinking of choosing you and Vincent as Conor's godparents."

"Yeah, I'm OK otherwise. No other damage except that," said Emily. She gave Isa a smile. "Really," she asked with a smile. "That would be lovely. I'm sure Vincent would be happy about it."

"Good," Isabella said. "I really am sorry about... well, it has to be one of the hardest things to hear that you can't have children. But you'll be OK. I'm sure of it. And Voltaire and I... once things are back to normal... we'll let you babysit Conor, if you want. And as for Vincent... he'll get over it, too. He loves you too much not to. Of course... I thought that about Voltaire, and now I don't know what's going on with him..."

"I have gotten to the point where I'm accepting that fact. I just hope that whenever I return home, he will have come to that acceptance too, or at least the start of the acceptance," said Emily. "We'll figure out what's going on with Voltaire soon. If Vincent can't get through to him, I think we may have to use Rori or if you want you could try to talk to him."

After Vincent's confusing attempt at a conversation with Voltaire, he decided he should tell Isabella what had happened. So he headed over to her cabin and was able to successfully pass through the protective wards she had set up and get to the front door. He knocked on the door and waited for her to answer.

Isabella heard the knock on the door. "Hang on a second, Emily," she said as she got up to check the door. Seeing that it was Vincent, she opened it. "Emily is not ready to come home yet, Vincent," she said firmly.

"Emily's here?" Vincent said, looking past Isabella. "Uh, no... um, actually, that's not why I'm here. I talked to Voltaire, and I wanted to tell you what happened. You're not going to like it."

"What?" Isabella gasped. She didn't like his tone of voice at all. This was definitely serious. "OK, Vincent, you'd better come in and tell me everything that happened." She stepped aside to let him into the cabin.

Vincent walked in and glanced over at Emily, who was still sitting on the couch. "Uh, hey, Emily," he said. "Um... I won't stay long. I just want to tell Isabella about Voltaire."

Isabella nodded. "Have a seat, Vincent," she said, pointing to a large armchair. "Where was Voltaire? What did he say to you? Please... tell me everything."

Vincent sat down. "He seems to be staying in Diagon Alley, at the Leaky Cauldron," he said grimly. "Isabella... he's not himself. I'm not even sure he recognized me. He's dressing strangely... and his hair!" Vincent shuddered. "He really needs some good gel or something. He's wearing it long. Anyway, I said something about his new look, and he said that he always dressed and did his hair that way. And then he said that maybe I didn't know him that well, and I said, 'Oh, I was only the best man at your wedding...' And he just lost it. He acting like I'd gone completely insane. It was like he had no memory of ever getting married."

Isabella felt like the floor had dropped out beneath her feet. She sank down onto the sofa next to Emily and stared at Vincent. "He... he doesn't remember?" she said faintly. "But... he couldn't.... he wouldn't forget me..."

"I'm sorry, Isabella," Vincent said sadly, shaking his head. "He doesn't seem well at all. Something's happened... I don't think he remembers anything that happened. I wish I had better news, but I just couldn't get through to him."

Emily shifted a little on the couch when Vincent entered the house and she watched him walk over to the chair and sit down, and only gave him a small smile when he had said hey to her. She had clasped her hands together and put them in her lap as he was speaking of Voltaire. Voltiare forgetting Isabella? Something was extremely wrong. Emily glanced over to Isa and frowned, feeling sorry for her.

Isabella fought back tears. "Th... thank you, Vincent. Thanks for trying, anyway. I... I don't know what's happened... but I'll figure it out somehow. As soon as I get Conor back." She wiped at her eyes tiredly.

"You're welcome," Vincent said. "I just wish I had better news for you." He looked first at her, then at Emily. "Um... I think... I think I'd better get going. Emily... I'm sorry. I hope... I hope we can talk soon, OK? I miss you already."

Emily glanced back to Vincent and nodded. "We will," said Emily. "I'll be back home in about another day. I'll walk you to the door." She stood up slowly and looked back to Isa, then back to Vincent.

Vincent walked over and put a reassuring hand on Isabella's shoulder. "It'll work itself out, I'm sure of it," he told her softly. Then he headed for the door. "I'll uh, be in touch," he said, looking at Emily.

Emily followed Vincent to the door. "OK then. I'll see you soon," she said. She wanted to give him a quick kiss, but she resisted. "Be careful."
