Diana frowned, she didn't see to Christian's sleeping or eating. She had tried to when she was younger thinking that if she had perfected the idea of domestic bliss he'd become enamored with her. She was a terror in the kitchen, and Christian would look down on her 'babying' him whenever she prodded him to take care of himself.
Still she felt guilty for letting Roselyn down by not taking better care of her son.
As for raising the family somewhere, Diana was just as clueless as Christian was. She really should have left, eavesdropping wasn't an attractive habit, but she couldn't tear herself away.

"I said I don't want to talk about it."
"What a pig-headed boy I raised. I am ashamed of myself for letting you end up so stubborn that you won't even talk with your wife about where you two will raise your children." Roselyn shook her head disapprovingly at him.
"Because it won't be us two!" His voice was deep and full of emotion as his mother stepped on a nerve. Roselyn looked at him in disbelief, as if he was being dramatic to prove a point. Christian buried his head in his hands.
Realizing her son was not simply being his usual stubborn self, Roselyn sat in the chair beside him and took his hand, holding it between hers. "Come on, now. It's always roughest in the first few years, dear. You don't need to jump to such terrible conclusions. You're under a lot of stress with this Death Eater mess and Diana's father's company. Give yourself a break."
"That has nothing to do with it."
"Well what, then?"
Christian couldn't admit to himself that seeing Diana kissing Derek had hurt him. He couldn't acknowledge the weaknesses that he had developed since reuniting with Diana. He was already in quite serious trouble with Lord Voldemort because of it. And if Diana didn't want to be with him, if she preferred to be with that man who had claimed to be his friend, then to hell with her.
"There's nothing between us. Nothing real."
"Christian, don't say that. You love her, you told me yourself."
"I don't f*cking remember that!"
"Watch your mouth. Even if you don't remember, I do. You love her and you have two children to think about. This isn't the time for you to be pig-headed."
"That's why I'm still here." He sighed. "Alyx and Liam. I need to make sure that they are safe. Diana can take care of herself. I am just seeing it through until we get this final board member taken care of, then I'm getting this marriage and f*cking life bond taken care of."

Diana reeled with the information she wished she hadn't heard. It wasn't anything she hadn't expected, but hearing Christian say it out loud was a quick jolt of reality to douse whatever attempt at reconciliation she was going to make.
He didn't love her. He might have at one point, but as she had already surmised, he didn't anymore. He didn't want to love her either. He was waiting until this final board member was taken care of then he was done with her. Not their children. But her.
Diana didn't want to hear anymore, her shoulders slumped in defeat as she turned and left the hallway.

"Christian, don't make such hasty decisions! You and Diana just-"
"There is no me and Diana, mum. Just drop it. I'm done talking about this! I told you it wasn't a good idea for you to come over now. Just go home!"
"Don't you talk to me like that, Christian Anthony Ward!"
"I am not a child you can scold whenever you don't like my f*cking decisions!"
"You will always be my child and when you are acting like a petulant one I will scold you." Roselyn got up from her chair and picked up the bags of presents that she hadn't been able to show him yet. She would wait until he was in a better mood. "Give your mother a hug, you ungrateful boy."
Christian sighed heavily and pulled himself up out of the chair. He wrapped his arms around his mother and she did the same in return. "Promise me you won't make any final decisions until things settle down," she said in a tone that conveyed comfort and reprimands all at once; a Roselyn special.
"Mum-"
"Promise me, Christian, or I'm moving back in here and we'll be having a talk about that liquor on your breath!"
"Fine," he said with a groan. "I promise."
"There's a good boy." She patted his cheek affectionately. "Now, you go eat something and rest up. I want you in top shape before you even think about taking on this last target. Do you understand me?"
"Yes mum."

Diana went to bed, the tears fresh on her cheeks would dry before Christian saw her. She curled into a ball, as much as one she could manage with Liam in the way, and bemoaned the fresh ache she had subjected herself to. She was full of remorse and loathing, a common occurrence where her feelings for Christian were concerned.
Why were things always so broken between them?
