Lyra was in the operating room now, the doctors attending to the damage she had done to herself. They were sealing her wounds and hooking her up to machines to steady her heartbeat as they pumped blood back into her body.
Mimsy paced in the waiting room, muttering to herself. She scolded herself for being too late to save Lyra. When the MLE arrived, Mimsy had to give a statement about what had happened. When one of the nurses confirmed Mimsy's assertion that the injury was self-inflicted they left.

There were few moments in Samantha's life when she appeared as intimidating as she did now. Upon hearing the news that Lyra was in the hospital she left the castle immediately to see to her friend.
She arrived just in time to hear the house elf's statement, she didn't have time to strong arm the MLE to sign non disclosure agreements, she needed to make sure Lyra was alright first but sent one of her guards along with one of the lawyers she had brought with her to detain the officers and handle any potential press leaks.
"Lyra Newbury." Sam said at the desk. The woman hemmed and hawed about Family and regulation, but Sam was prepared with magical contracts and paperwork signed when Lyra joined her magazine as an executive. She would have Lyra transferred out of the hospital as soon as possible to receive private care at the Montgomery estates.
***
"Julian, this isn't your fault. I know you think it is but-"
"Will you shut the f*ck up?! You don't know sh*t!" he yelled turning toward Nik.
"Let's just go to the hospital, we can see Lyra-"
"Why?! Why did you do it Nik?" Julian asked turning dangerously toward his friend, he knocked over a lamp as he approached Nik.

"She's still in surgery," the woman at the desk said finally. "I'll call you when they've moved her to a room." Lyra would not be released to private care until her vitals were stabilized, but it was too early to make any clear estimates on when that might be.
It was almost an hour before a nurse came out and informed Samantha and Mimsy that Lyra was out of surgery and resting in a private room. They were allowed to see her, but were warned that she would probably be sleeping and not to wake her.
Lyra lied in the bed, her eyes were shut but a steady beeping from the heart monitor signaled that she was alive. She was wearing a hospital gown and her hair was wet from where the nurse had washed away the blood. Her normally rosy cheeks were ashen.
Mimsy scurried quickly up to the bed and took Lyra's hand in hers. She apologized quietly for bringing help too late and admonished herself for not staying when Lyra had ordered her to leave.

Samantha narrowed her eyes at the woman and resisted the urge to move to petty remarks by calling her a fat peasant. She knew that Lyra wouldn't be moved until after surgery, she simply wanted all the paperwork to be done and finalized once Lyra was stable so there was no hemming and hawing about. Sam - if nothing - was efficient.
During the hour she had to wait for information she grilled (gently at least for the circumstances) the house elf and threatened the elf to keep her mouth shut about Lyra's 'habits'. Then she called Lyra's therapist and told him to come to the hospital, Sam would need reinforcements. She was about to go head off the MLE officers when she got news that Lyra was out of surgery.
"Thank Godric, we can leave this hell hole." she said bitterly and sniffed at the nurse who presumed to order her to do anything.
"As for you, I expect her transfer paperwork to be completed within the hour or my lawyers will comb through, not only your personal records but the entire hospital's until there's so many suits against you, your grandchildren won't be able to find employment, and I'll own this building. Do I make myself clear?"
Gathering her coat and purse she left another lawyer behind to deal with the nurse, who - with much more patience and grace - confirmed Samantha's threats and assisted the woman in finalizing Lyra's paperwork.
She left her private physicians to look over Lyra's charts and went to see her friend. Though Lyra looked lifeless, the steady thump of the machine gave Sam reassurance.
"Well this was bloody stupid." she said to her friend crossing her arms over her chest, "After everything we've been through and you just think that you can leave me like this?" Sam said with a great deal of irritation. Tears reluctantly pushed at the corners of her eyes, "We're going to have a long talk when you wake up Lyra Newbury." ***
"Do what? What the bloody hell are you talking about Julian?!"
"I saw you with her!"
Nik was a quick thinker under stressful circumstances, which was part of the reason he was so valuable as a business partner. The blood drained from his face as he began to put two and two together, "Julian...what did you do?"

It was late, but as soon as he got the call, Rohan dressed and headed out. Lyra was a mess, to speak plainly, but she wasn't suicidal. Rohan was nearly certain that this was an accident of some sort and he agreed to come to the hospital in case the MLE attempted to put her under an involuntary psychiatric hold. An asylum was the last place Lyra needed to be at the moment.
He checked in the with the woman at the desk who looked aggravated when he asked for Lyra Newbury, but was given clearance to see her. He smiled politely as he turned away from the annoyed woman, leaving her with one of the many Montgomery lawyers. He checked the numbers on the outside of the doors until he found Lyra's room.
"A friendly talk," he added gently from the doorway as he looked past Samantha to the pale young woman he now felt responsible for. He smiled at the house elf who stood on the far side of Lyra's hospital bed, then at Samantha.

Samantha was visibly relieved, "Thank God. Someone who isn't incompetent."
She shifted around to see the doctor, "I'm glad you're here, she's asleep and I was going to go speak with the MLE." Sam needed someone to yell at that was conscious.

"She wasn't supposed to...I didn't think that she'd..." Julian was having trouble finishing his sentences, he still couldn't believe what he had walked in on, and how it had been all his fault.
"Well she did, so I repeat: What. The. F*ck. Did. You. Do?!" Nik's anger was mounting as he thought of Lyra fighting for her life because of some baseless assumption Julian had made.

If it weren't for the circumstances, Rohan would have chuckled at Samantha's assertion that the hospital staff were incompetent. She just liked him because he had a private practice and wasn't obligated to follow business policies put in place by people who sit in a boardroom and had no idea what was currently going on in the world. She also liked him because he happened to be a rather accomplished psychologist, though the unconscious blonde lying in the hospital bed was an argument against his reputation.
"What have they been told thus far?" he asked of the MLE. He noticed the house elf shrink into the corner at his question.

Sam proceeded to tell Rohan what she had heard and then let the elf explain the rest. ***
"What did you do?!" he roared back at Nik. He felt helpless, he was in the wrong and he knew it, but he was too angry to clear up any misconceptions. He wanted the pain to stop, he wanted the agony to go away, and he couldn't paint himself out of the misery. He needed something stronger.
With that anger in tow he swung at his best friend.

Rohan listened to the explanations that were provided. Lyra was still cutting herself, he knew that much already from their sessions so her behavior today was only slightly surprising. She had been doing well, but there was a constant turbulence in her life that Lyra seemed adamant about ignoring. He knew from his conversations with Lyra over the past week that she was struggling with her "boyfriend" and their "relationship". Even as Rohan thought the words silently in his head, he could see Lyra's expression as she once again explained the complicated web that was her relationship with her not-boyfriend, as she fondly referred to him.
Between Samantha and the house elf, Rohan was brought up to date on what had happened since Lyra's panic attack. "And what happened before? Where was she coming home from?" he asked Mimsy.
The elf wrung her ears as she answered. "She was going to see Master Julian, sir. But Mistress wasn't gone but 30 minutes."
This wasn't surprising at all. Rohan merely nodded and thanked Mimsy for the information.

Nik easily avoided the first swing his way, but he was surprised all the same. He pulled back reluctant to actually hurt his friend, but he was stunned by everything that was happening.
Julian didn't stop, he was a tortured man on the edge of sanity and he had just taken a long step off.
Through his slurring and anger Nik could make out what Julian was accusing him of.
"I saw you together...and I wanted her to feel what I felt..."

He turned his attention to Samantha, who looked as though she were ready for a fight. Rohan felt sorry for the poor officer that had shown up to handle Lyra's incident.
"Shall we?" he asked as he opened the door for Samantha.

"Indeed." she said smiling at the therapist as he opened the door for her. She trusted her lawyer and guard she had sent to detain the officer, but she was happy Rohan was there now for additional support. She led him down the hallways to where the officers were.
***
When Julian appeared defeated and confessed his intentions, Nik knew he'd be able to ask, "What did you do Julian...?"
"I did what I do...I staged a scene for her... I just wanted her to..."
"To what?!"
"To hurt...like I hurt..."
"She did." Nik said coldly, " Are you happy now?"
Julian looked up at Nik, all the despair in the world in his eyes. His anguish sickened Nik who couldn't care less about the man's pain when Lyra was fighting for her life, he reeled his arm back and slammed his fist into Julian's jaw.
Julian fell flat but sat up slightly ready for another round. Nik kicked him back and kept his foot on Julian's throat as Julian struggled to breathe and move.
Nik leaned forward, "I never f*cking touched her."
"I saw you!" he managed to yell though his face was turning red.
"You saw sh*t. And instead of sticking around and confronting us to figure out what the hell was going on, you f*cking broke her. She could be dying, she could be dead because of you."
Julian knew what Nik was saying was true, if it were possible to loathe himself anymore than he already did the look in Nik's eyes would have pushed him to that point.
"So this is what you're going to do..."

"I see you've brought the entire team," Rohan said to Samantha as the officers, guard, and second lawyer came into view.
"Gentlemen," Rohan said politely, announcing himself to the group. "I'm Dr Nadeer, Miss Newbury's psychologist. I hear there might be some confusion about where my patient will be spending the next 24 hours. Let's clear things up, shall we?"

After their 'discussion' Nik made his way to the hospital. He wasn't sure what Julian would do, but he washed his hands of it. Lyra needed him now, and if he was certain about anything it was that Sam would be driving the hospital staff mad about now.

"No confusion," the older MLE officer replied. "When she's stable she'll be taking a trip to the psychiatric ward. For 48 hours," he added with a look that dared Rohan to challenge him.
The younger officer piped in, using a slightly less aggressive tone. "It's standard protocol on a suicide case."

Samantha, the sixteen year old unassuming girl stepped forward in what appeared to be a rather meek way, she smiled deceptively.
"Excuse me, and which one of you is the licensed physician that determined Ms. Newbury's case to be a suicide? Where did you receive your degree? And what questions exactly did you ask my unconscious employee to determine the circumstances of her accident?" Samantha asked rapidly between the two MLE officers. She looked between them, then continued.
"And I'm sure you've already been through Ms. Newbury's file which lists her as a potential target for this serial killer you all have allowed to roam free. To say nothing of the House Elf who saw a bad man enter Ms. Newbury's apartment before the incident. Or even the homeless man who may have a guilty conscience and confess to the attack come morning." Samantha said pleasantly knowing full well what lengths she would go to to protect Lyra and the girl's reputation.
"Tell me, if it turns out that Ms. Newbury was indeed attacked or provoked in any way and this was not a suicide attempt, are either of you prepared to handle the massive lawsuit my company will be filing for defamation? I can assure you the legal fees for representation alone are several times your annual salaries put together. That is if you retain employment after my lawyers get a handle on all your previous cases to check for any other poorly executed reports."
She lifted sympathetic eyes toward the older officer, "I would certainly hate for your wife to suffer any distress what with the little one on the way Officer Carrington." she said then turned to the younger officer, "And it would be just awful for your mother's medical bills were you unable to support her because of a simple misunderstanding Officer Greene."
She smiled at both of them as if she wasn't blackmailing either of them ruthlessly, and provided a suitable answer, "I'm sure you'd both rather wait until Dr. Nadeer has had a chance to speak with my employee and ascertain her mental health, he is after all one of the premier psychologists in the country."
She smiled brilliantly at Rohan, then back at the officers, "Well...Gentlemen?"

Samantha had the situation more than covered. Rohan wondered briefly what the point of his presence was, besides to firm up Samantha's story that Lyra did indeed have a licensed professional on her side. But he needed to make no additional comments as both of the officers began to look worried. Their faces grew pale at the mention of the serial killer that had attempted to kidnap Lyra and they grew continually worried as she went on, especially around the blackmailing segment of Samantha's speech.
The younger officer looked to his partner. Carrington cleared his throat and looked at anyone other than Samantha. "When are you planning to speak with your patient, Dr... what was it?"
"Nadeer," Rohan supplied. "As soon as she wakes up. I suspect she'll be under private care by then." He gave a professional smile to the officers, then glanced in Samantha's direction.

Nik arrived in time to watch Samantha in action, and smirked with pride.
"I believe we've got the situation handled gentlemen. You'll be notified as soon as there are any updates. Thank you for checking in on our dear friend. Our head of security is already speaking to your superiors. We appreciate your help. Mr. Pritchard," Nik said looking at the well dressed lawyer standing behind Samantha, "Why don't you see to their confidentiality agreements over coffee? I'm sure these men have more important matters to attend to today."

Mimsy stayed with Lyra as everyone filed out to talk with the MLE. She sat on the edge of Lyra's bed, patting her hand and crying. She'd created an invisible barrier to catch her tears so as not to weep on her mistress.
Between sniffles Mimsy heard a soft moaning and as she looked up Mimsy saw Lyra's head move slightly. Mimsy cried out with joy at the first signs of life that didn't emanate from a machine.

"Nik!" Sam said with another brilliant smile when she faced him. Nik was here, which meant everything would be fine.
After the MLE left with Pritchard Nik raised an eyebrow at the fierce unassuming girl he loved, "You brought pregnant wives and mothers into it? That's cold Sam." he said almost proud.
She shrugged and hugged him quickly.
"Have you been to see her?"
"Yes, although the nurse wasn't helpful at all. Lyra was sleeping when I left to handle those two. I left Mimsy there...I may have been a little harsh on the elf."
