"He really has no intentions of making up with Mason, does he? And, he's always like that? Just...waiting. Doing nothing?" Lyra chewed on her lip as she was once again seeking Nicolas' support.
Lyra was in over her head now that she realized she was in love with someone she hardly knew. One would think that love would be weakened by that knowledge, but love doesn't work that way.

Nik frowned, "No. They'll make up." he said reassuringly, "It will just happen on Julian's timeline." he said with a sigh.
"There's more...things that Julian needs to tell you. Things that aren't my place to say for why he's the way he is. But what I can say is that he's a perfectionist. When it comes to relationships, messy scares the hell out of him."
He gave her a pointed look that was also somewhat sympathetic.

Lyra made an "oomph" sound and rolled her eyes. "Then he's dating the wrong girl," she said sarcastically before taking a deep sip. They weren't dating, but she didn't feel the need to make that caveat every time. It was just easier to talk of him in this way, so long as Julian wasn't actually within earshot.
"Do I even want to know the rest?" Maybe it was better that she didn't know Julian, then she wouldn't know to be scared for him as she was with his attempted suicide. It didn't matter that it happened years before Lyra had ever even met Julian, just knowing it had happened was terrifying.

"It might help. At least in the understanding department."
He looked at her speculatively, "Belle was perfect for him." he said narrowing his eyes, "Patient. Understanding. Unwavering devotion and submission. Docile."
He looked at Lyra flatly, "You're nothing like that."
Slowly he began to grin, " Which is why I think you might just be better than perfect for Julian. You won't give him what he wants...but you'll hit him over the head with the things he needs."

Nicolas listed off all the reasons why Julian's ex-fiancee was a perfect fit for Julian and every new item to the list felt like a knife twisting in her heart. The message was driven home by Nik's clear statement that Lyra was none of the things that perfect Belle was. Or Lyra thought that was the message.
"You are such a tosser," she said through gritted teeth as he finally made his point. Lyra placed a hand to her chest where the pain was emanating from, as if that would ease it. "You're supposed to start with the comforting sh*t first when dealing with a nutter, don't you know that?"

He laughed, "I'm sorry." he sobered, "I truly am. But I think I just realized how much he needs you." he gave her a smile.
"I didn't see it at first. I fought it because I couldn't stand you." he teased, " But eventually I saw what you meant to him, and I was happy because I thought that you might make him happy. Go figure."
He gave her a stern look, "Now are you ready for this next part...you might want to record it because I will never say it again..."

She rolled her eyes loudly as he claimed he couldn't stand her, as if something had since changed. Lyra smiled at his approval of her for Julian.
As Nik's features grew stern Lyra say up straighter. She fought against the smile that was trying its damnedest to escape as she nodded, ready to hear this one-time-only admission.

"That was before I knew you Lyra. Before I got to see who you really were. You're kind. You're clever. You've got this ridiculously big heart that is going to be the death of me. You're sassy, which is truly going to be the death of me. And you're messy. You are beautifully messy, and all of those things makes Julian an incredibly lucky guy."
He dropped his stern expression and looked at the wine he was drinking, "What's in this stuff?"

Lyra's restrained smile was unleashed and she beamed at Nicolas. He was not above saying nice things to Lyra, but they usually only surfaced after he'd kicked her arse emotionally or she needed to be pulled out of one of her spirals. Neither of those were the case now and it showed on her face, and in her taunts.
"Oh, I poisoned you," she said with as straight of a face as she could muster. "It makes you profess your love before you die." Lyra began to laugh.

"Oh thank Godric. For a second there I actually thought I meant those kind things I said." he said relieved.
"I suppose death is a mercy then." he winked at her.

"No, no. You meant them. No weaseling out of it. I heard it. You heard. Pretty sure our waiter heard it," she said with a grin as their waiter appeared with their food.
"And to think, we get to sit here basking in your admiration until you've eaten that whole thing," she said as a huge cut of meat was placed in front of Nicolas.

"Jealous?" he asked moving past the basking part of the conversation as she eyed his steak. He smirked. She needed the protein after their very long session today, soup and salad wasn't going to cut it.

"Of all the weight you're going to gain if you eat like that? Hardly." She took a bite of her own food, which was good but wasn't nearly as tasty as she knew Nicolas' food would have been.
"Oh, maybe that's it. You're always helping with my problems and I have nothing to offer in return. I can help you get rid of that spare tire," she said with a playful smirk. The only fat Nik had on his entire body was his fat head where his ego was stored.

He wouldn't tell her, because he had admitted far too much that evening already, but she gave him plenty. She was refreshing and spirited, and he could relax with her.
"Nonsense, how do you think I attained the perfect physique I have now?" he cut into his meat, "Protein." he took a bite.

Lyra rolled her eyes and smiled at him.
The rest of their meal went in much the same fashion, jumping effortlessly from sincere discussions to playful teasing. Lyra took her time with her food so that she wasn't finished too much earlier than Nicolas who had an actual meal. When their plates were nearly cleaned and she'd had a few cocktails, Lyra leaned back in her chair happily.

She didn't drink too much, but at the same time she didn't hardly eat either.
"Alright you lush, let's get you home before Julian yells at me."

One side of Lyra's mouth curled upward as Nicolas called her a lush. "I swear, you get in one little drunken scrap with some men and your boyfriend never lets you have fun again," she laughed, though there was slight edge to her words. Anytime she had a drink she felt the need to monitor herself to keep Julian happy, even if he wasn't there and even if she wasn't drinking much already. She knew he worried because he loved her, but his worries added to her worries and sometimes the pressure was a bit overwhelming.
Lyra wiped her mouth the her napkin before setting in on the table and grabbing her handbag. She stood gracefully though she could feel the effects of her drinks.

"Your non-boyfriend at that." he said sympathetically. Julian wanted her safe, so did Nik.
He shrugged, "If you'd rather, we could simply put security on you, a couple of bodyguards."

Her lips pursed as Nicolas made the caveat; non-boyfriend. She wished they were both at a place that they could drop all of the pretenses and just be with each other but she had a long ways to go before she could even consider that.
"Ooh, bodyguards. Would they be cute?" she laughed as they headed out of the restaurant.

He rolled his eyes, "Yes, we hire them based upon their looks obviously."
