This time her faux pas elicited actual laughter and she apologized between breaths. "Well surely you've got a girl of some sort? One not related to you, most likely."

"One in every port, but nothing special." Vanessa supplied.
"Brat." he said affectionately shaking his head.
"He's waiting for true love."
"He is going to sing again if you keep that up."
Vanessa made a face, "Alright I'll stop."

Lyra laughed at their banter. It reminded her of the way Lyra and Nicolas taunted each other. It was affection, but not romantic.
"That bad, eh?" she asked Vanessa of Derek's singing. "I guess God can only bless you with so much." She laughed again and finished her drink.

"No he's-"
"Terrible really." Derek said with a grin, "But I think they want to hear you again starshine." he said motioning toward the host who had called Vanessa's name.
Derek turned to watch Vanessa sing, the girl could sing the phone book and he'd listen.

Lyra cheered as Vanessa took the stage. "She's really impressive," Lyra whispered to Derek as Vanessa began to sing.
A quick glance around the bar proved that everyone else agreed with Lyra. The conversations died, all the heads turned, and the room was utterly silent except for the instrumentals and the brunette singing.

"She's in a good mood tonight." Derek said with a soft smile. There was a fondness in his eyes for the girl who was singing another love song. Vanessa was brilliant at love songs, but she was masterful at the blues.
"Do you sing?"

Lyra laughed softly. "Merlin, no. I mean, I'll sing in the shower, but everyone sounds good in the shower. I did a song earlier, it was fun but no one's going to be requesting be to go on stage."
Lyra was okay with not being a good singer, she didn't have to be good at everything and if the last year had taught her anything it was that she was surprisingly horrific at a great number of things. But she'd also found her place in the world finally and that was enough.

When Vanessa finished, she quickly went back to do the rounds once again. Derek engaged in casual conversation with Lyra until Vanessa's shift ended.
"There's still time to sing another..." he said to both girls.

"That's all you," Lyra said as she looked at Vanessa. Lyra wasn't about to embarrass herself in front Derek, even if she wasn't interested in him. He was too cute to sing in front of.

"I'm good for the night." Vanessa said shaking her head. "Just let me grab my things and I'll be right out."
Derek nodded.
"How are you doing?" he asked in reference to her tipsiness level.

"Lovely," Lyra said with a big smile as she stood up. She had only had two drinks, so she wasn't as tipsy as she usually would have been leaving a bar. She really was trying to be good. She pulled her handbag off the hook on the underside of the table and cuffed it in the crook of her elbow.
"Where is it you live, Derek?"

"A couple of places." he answered honestly, "Wherever I can put my head for the night." He owned a flat in London which is where Vanessa was staying. He still had a place at the Burke Ancestral home, and several suites at various hotels that accommodated him when he had need. He wasn't the type to put down roots.
Vanessa returned with her things and nodded.
"Alright let's get you ladies home."

Lyra made polite conversation as they went, but the walk wasn't too far and before she knew it she was at her apartment building. She turned at the door and smiled. "Thank you for seeing me home. It was lovely meeting you, Derek." She smiled and looked him over quickly again. He was even more attractive in the moonlight.
"And I will be seeing you later," she grinned at Vanessa. If nothing else, her venture into karaoke had been a pleasant one and it would be a great way to blow off steam. She wondered if she could ever manage to drag Julian down there with her.

"Night love, take care."
Vanessa lingered and gave the woman a hug, "We'll see you next time." she smiled and left with Derek who waved once more.
