"Definitely." She took Julian's hand and let him guide her out to the dance floor. It had been too long since they danced together and having Julian so near made Lyra sigh happily. She wanted to tell him how much she loved him but as they weren't dating she decided to say it with her eyes instead. It wasn't the lustful passion she showed him, though there was plenty of that in store for later. Lyra looked on Julian with sense of complete and utter devotion.

When he looked at her like that it was hard to think of anything, let alone the relationship she had somehow formed with Nik.
He spun her around the dance floor enjoying the way her body fit in his.
When the song ended the couples clapped and the singer thanked the dancers, "We're going to do something a little different tonight. It's Le Sirene's 30th anniversary, and for those of you who don't know the story, Pierre and Jean Anne met on the dance floor 32 years ago. And in true French scandal fashion, they were not each other's original date that evening. They participated in a cotillion and switched partners several times until finding one another. Now we call it fate, and invite you to do the same and dance with someone you did not come here with. After all if you love someone you must let them go, if they come back they were always yours, if they don't they never were." the singer winked as they started the strings for a new dance.

Julian was a marvelous dancer and too enjoyed how they fit together. If there were any question in whether they belonged together it would be squashed by seeing them together now. "Godric bless your mother for teaching you to dance," she smiled up at him.
As the song ended and the singer began his speech, Lyra fell into Julian's chest and listened. When the music began to play again she looked up at Julian with a grin. "Since we're not dating it means we didn't come here together, right?"

"Haha, nice try." Nik said taking Lyra's hand, and sending Sam Julian's way.
Julian frowned at the sudden switch.
"Apparently three men made a bee line for my next dance and Mr. Macho over here is being protective. Security reasons, blah blah blah." Sam explained shaking her head.
There were also men moving toward Lyra to ask her to dance, Nik turned and growled.

Lyra's brow furrowed as Nik stole her away from Julian and she pouted as she looked over her shoulder at Julian and Sam. She looked up at Nik who was scaring away any oncoming men. "Oh, that's attractive," Lyra commented on his growling.

Nik couldn't tell if she was serious or not, considering other women had found his protectiveness, and indeed his 'growling' attractive.
But his look softened and he laughed regardless.
"So how is your not date going?"

"It would be better if I was dancing with him instead of you," she said tauntingly before sighing happily and providing a real answer to his question. "I think it's going well, but I'm still nervous that I'll do something that makes him think things are moving too fast. I don't want him to disappear again."
Lyra looked over at Julian as Nicolas spun her around. It was hard to read his expression through all of the movement but Lyra was able to admire his elegant moves as an outside observer. She had always felt he moved gracefully when they danced, and he indeed looked equally as graceful. Lyra turned back to Nik, who also moved with ease across the floor. This didn't exactly surprise Lyra as she assumed Nicolas had been to many formal parties in his lifetime, just as Julian had.

Julian's thoughts were not easy or graceful as he saw how well his non-girlfriend fit in the arms of another. Sam caught his look, "It doesn't mean anything Julian, it's not like that."
"Ever the observer." Julian sighed, "I suppose I'm merely tense about where things are between us."
"I thought you wanted to slow things down?"
"I did. I do...actually I didn't want to start things up. I hate that I have the power to hurt her, but I'm selfish and I want her just the same."
"Well those are choices that she gets to make, making them for her is only going to hurt her more."
"I know."
****
"Believe me, Sam's much more graceful on the dance floor than you are." he teased in return.
"I wouldn't worry about it pet." he said with a shrug, " Julian's in heaven right now, he gets to be with you without being guilty about being with you."

As Nicolas commented on her lack of grace - which was just absurd as Lyra was a lovely dancer, she "accidentally" stepped on his foot and made a clearly fake apologetic look in his direction. This made her laugh and Nik's next words made her smile continue.
"But I'm afraid he's never going to get to the point where he can be with me. Or maybe I'm just projecting my own fears onto him. I have so many problems, Nik," she said with a bit of a whine, completely sincere in her words. Lyra had been working with her therapist but aside from a few techniques to attempt to quell her panic attacks she wasn't seeing the progress she was expecting.

Nik lifted her chin, "It's not going to be overnight love. You've already come a long way by seeing a therapist in the first place. Everything will be fine, Julian already adores you...and I guess you're not so completely terrible." he said the last with a feigned sigh.

Lyra looked up into Nik's eyes as he spoke comforting words that made her smile. He really was a good friend and he made it easy for her to talk to him about her concerns. And then they would both remember that they annoyed the bloody hell out of each other and he'd make a stupid comment.
"Har har," Lyra deadpanned. "I'm amazing and you're incredibly lucky to be gifted with my presence so regularly." She smiled haughtily at him before smirking. "And if you keep it up that regularity will increase," she threatened in a playful manner.

"Too regularly." he said under his breath with an added grumble. They still annoyed one another, but they were friends.
As the dance came to a natural end Julian made his way back to Lyra.
"I can't tell if you're going to kill each other or hug half the time." Sam said with a teasing grin.

"Oh please, he's all yours for the hugging. But if you ever do decide you've tired of him, I can certainly help take care of him." She eyed Nicolas knowingly and then turned her attention on Julian.
"I have to admit, I was a little jealous when you and Sam were dancing," she teased him. "You two looked so graceful out there."

Julian didn't share his own thoughts of jealousy afraid they might have been too real. He of course trusted his friend, and knew that Lyra was in love with him, but the pair did have chemistry.
"I think our dessert is waiting for us." Sam said with a soft smile.

"Yum!" Lyra held Julian's arm as they walked back to their table and sure enough two delicious looking treats were waiting. Julian again helped Lyra with her chair and smiled adoringly at him.
"You try it first and tell me it's horrible so I won't eat it," she teased as she scooped a bite with her fork and offered it to Julian.

"That's just nauseating." Nik said watching them with a sneer.
"Nik." Sam said getting her quasiboyfriend's attention. She held a cherry by it's stem, "Do be quiet." she insisted before kissing the man which effectively shut down any other thoughts in his head.
Julian smirked and took the offering Lyra gave him before kissing her as well.

He tasted like chocolate and as Lyra pulled away she couldn't help but smile at him. "That," she said in reference to their kiss, "is certainly better than any silly dessert."
Nik could make all the snide comments he wanted. Lyra was in love and it did not bother her to show it. She would, however, mock him later for how obviously whipped he was by Samantha.

A mocking that he would return ten fold.
As they finished their dessert with far less interesting bites in between bits of romanticism. Lyra had successfully distracted Nik from his problems.

As the couples left the restaurant Lyra thought things couldn't have gone better. Nik didn't seem to dwell at all on his familial woes and Julian appeared to have had a perfectly comfortable evening out in public on a non-date with his not-girlfriend. Overall, Lyra deemed the night a success.
As the carriage arrived in front of Lyra's apartment building to drop her off first, she smiled at Julian and silently asked him to come inside with her eyes.

"That's not fair." Julian said looking at her. If they were running a poll on who was whipped, he'd just as easily enter his name in the contest as well.
He gave her a quick kiss, "If you keep looking at me like that I will lose whatever resolve I have to give this not dating thing a try."
