Lyra’s eyes widened as he explained what had been happening to her. She gave a weak smile as he told her these sorts of things were common, then chewed on her lip as she struggled with how to ask the next question.
"How do I make it stop? I mean, when it happens the pain doesn’t go away unless I…" She didn’t want to admit to her coping method. She knew it was wrong. What if this wasn’t one of the common parts of a panic attack? What if she was too broken to fix?
Dr Nadeer was silent again, waiting for her to talk. The silence lasted longer than it had before and in that time Lyra started to cry. A box of tissues floated from the side table onto her lap and she took one and wiped her eyes with it.

“We don’t have to talk about that yet, if you don’t want.” Rohan could guess at where she was heading without her telling him. He’d seen others like her. This wasn’t as common as the panic attacks but he’d dealt with it before. Rohan was certain he could help her. In time.
“But I would like for you to ring one of your mates if you feel it coming on, if you can. Sometimes having someone with you may make it easier.” And safer. It wasn't a solution to her maladaptive coping strategy but it could help protect her from herself until she was ready to really explore that avenue.

She noticed Dr Nadeer’s quill scribbling on the notepad again, but this time she didn’t bother to try to read what was being written. She could take a guess. Crazy. Nutter. Needs to be locked up.
Lyra nodded at his suggestion as she wiped her face. The only person who knew that her panic attacks led to her cutting herself was Nicolas and she wasn’t about to burden anyone else with her trauma. Nik wouldn’t be too pleased to hear that he was the new go-to for Lyra’s episodes. The thought of Nik’s uneasiness almost made Lyra smile but as she wiped away a few more tears the moment had gone.
Lyra sat quietly for a long time until Dr Nadeer asked if she wanted to continue to see him. She nodded numbly and he pulled out an appointment card, wrote down their next session, and handed it to her.

“In the meantime,” Rohan pulled his wand from the inside pocket of his coat and summoned a file from the cabinet in the corner of the room. “These are some exercises that might help if you start to feel anxious.”
He handed her a sheet of parchment from the file.

Lyra wanted to argue. It didn’t feel like an hour and a half had gone by already. She was just starting to talk. She didn’t feel any better, not like she was expecting to. Therapy was supposed to fix everything but she was leaving feeling even worse. She’d nearly admitted to several things that plagued her nightmares and filled her days with worry – something she’d not done with anyone else.
She sighed and took the list that was offered to her. She looked over it briefly, thinking it all looked a little silly. But it was worth a shot if it meant she wouldn’t feel the need to rip her thigh apart. And not having to call on Nik all the time would be a plus.
She pulled herself off the couch and stood to shake Dr Nadeer’s hand. She thanked him as she left the office and passed through the waiting room. Another woman was sitting there and she made eye contact with Lyra. It was unnerving. Lyra turned away and kept walking.
