Alek guided Christine out to the gardens with the rest of the guests and awaited the announcement from Christine's cousin and the debutante. "Do people actually enjoy this?" he whispered into Christine's ear as the snitch was released and flew off into the maze. Alek's query was answered by the sound of laughter and the sight of grown men and woman dashing into the hedge maze.
Alek had been to formal events, but nothing near this lavish. The Montrgomerys appeared to engage in every possible sophisticated practice, right down to the absurd.

Christine laughed, still enjoying the carefree fun that came with drinking a bottle of champagne mostly by oneself. She wouldn't be laughing in the morning.
"Nobody does this better than Sam does." she said with a shrug as if it was an assumed statement. Her cousin really was good at so many things, things that Christine had very little interest in. And Christine had only ever been jealous of it when they were much younger children. Christine found her own way, and she also learned the truth of Sam's skills. They came from being tortured and beaten to perform without flaw. Alek and Sam were similar in that fashion. Perhaps that was the reason Christine could sense the loneliness in him.
"She was meant for this."
Much like Alek was a King in his own way Samantha was a Queen in hers. She knew exactly what society wanted and needed and gave it to them in return for their loyalty.
Christine was a different creature. She was an adventurer. A free spirit that could never be caught, except by one person, and that person didn't want her anymore.
"Come on, let's go into the maze."

Alek watched Christine's reaction to the ceremony. She seemed in awe of her cousin, but not envious. He could see her up there announcing the events with a big flourish, but she would have done so out of obligation. Samantha however appeared to love the elegance of what she was doing, as if it were her life's ambition. Alek was beginning to understand that Christine was possibly the most down to Earth of any of her family, despite living in a castle.
He conceded to joining the crowd in the maze, having other plans than hunting for a golden snitch. He would be hunting, but it was a different game altogether.

Indeed Christine could easily step into the proper debutante shoes and perform accordingly, but her spirit was too restless to stay in one place for long. Perhaps she was just as elusive as her cousin, but just in a different way.
As far as being down to earth, the entire family with perhaps the exception of Samantha, were similarly easy going. It was true that Edward had a nose for business and James a nose for finance, but they pursued those avenues as hobbies rather than a desire for more income. Her uncle Christopher lived in a cabin of a ship most days out of the year and could put together a string of curse words to make any sailor grin. Anthony lived his life the way he saw fit too.
As far as Sheryl and Lillian went, there were no put upon airs for them either, and England would be hard pressed to find two kinder souls.
For as much as the Montgomeries seemed to own, they were eccentric in their disregard for status and money. Which was possibly the reason Christine's relationship with Dorian didn't seem odd to her.
But Christine didn't bother to ponder the intricacies of her family. She just loved them how they were, and believed herself blessed to have them.
As she entered the maze the pathway closed behind her and Alek, she smiled, "Catch me if you can." she teased kicking her heels off and turning to run.

Had he wanted to, he'd have bested her in no time. Not only was he fast, but his senses were heightened giving him an advantage that Christine did not have. If this wasn't a well devised game he played with her he could have chased her down like his prey and she'd have been no match for his strength. It was lucky for Christine that Alek knew the rules of the game he played, and simply smirked and shook his head lovingly as she ran off.
He followed after, restraining his pace so as to keep her game going. She rounded corners ahead of him, the paths changing shape as he approached but he could smell her and he found his way despite the trickery of the maze.

Christine knew the maze well. She knew it's tricks and blindspots, but he kept finding her. She found she didn't mind it so much.
She was having a good time, if such a thing were possible. She felt free to be herself, to be the alluring, playful, woman she was, and have that reciprocated by Alek. She didn't have to tease him into a playful mood or penetrate his defenses. She didn't have to beg him for his love.
This time she let him catch her. She was breathless.
She let her body go limp against him, "Caught me."

For all the similarities Lex might have seen between Alek and Dorian, Alek definitely believed he was the better brother. Proof positive tonight as Christine showed her playful side with him, and in return he didn't make her frown or cry as Dorian might have.
Every time Alek turned a corner and surprised Christine he saw a flicker of something in her eye. He was winning his game. Slowly, but it was there. He would have her eventually and Dorian would suffer and drown in the knowledge that Alek had bested him and claimed Christine as his prize.
Christine allowed Alek to catch her, or rather Alek allowed Christine to think that was the case. His arms wrapped around her tiny waist as she let her body fall into his. He brushed her curls behind her ear and caressed her cheek then leaned in to kiss her.

Christine never once thought she truly outran him. The man was unnaturally fast, and she was more than a little tipsy.
She knew what was coming. Once again her eyes fell to the absent space between them, her body felt his against hers, she felt the lean strength of him around her and as her eyes found his she saw his intentions clear as day, at least what he intended to do.
Her smile was gone, her mouth was dry, she gave him an almost pained look of confusion and vulnerability. She wanted him. She wanted him to take the pain away, the hurt that had come with Dorian's rejection. So she closed her eyes and let the chips fall where they would.

He kissed her gently at first, testing the water as it were. When she didn't pull away his intensity increased, pulling her firm body against his. She tasted of champagne and smelled of uncertainty but there was no resistance. She was too broken for that. Even the most wounded of animals would put up a fight, but whatever Dorian had done to Christine had been enough that she succumbed to Alek now.

Christine wasn't broken, she just wanted to forget all the horrible things that had happened to her since running into the dead woman a few months ago. Alek helped her to forget.
He kissed like a wild ride and bad decision rolled into one. This was a dangerous move with a dangerous person and Christine didn't care. She wanted to be touched, she wanted to be treated like a woman and not the child Dorian thought she was.
So when he kissed her she wasn't succumbing, she was taking. She was conquering.
She kissed him back with just as much intensity.

This was certainly a bad decision on Christine's part but it thrilled Alek to no end. His lips were possessive over hers as he pinned her to the wall of the maze. He was hungry for vengeance and she tasted so sweet on his tongue.
All around them in neighboring alleys of the maze they could hear party guests moving about, talking and laughing, completely unaware of Alek's impending victory. Alek pulled at the strap of her gown, his mouth moving to top of Christine's bosom just as footsteps approached.

“This is utterly pointless,” Bellatrix bemoaned as she followed the pathway further on. “Where are you, Rodolphus?” He had been only a few paces ahead of her just moments ago and now he was nowhere in sight. The damned maze kept changing and Belltrix was lost. She turned a corner, and came upon a couple who were just as surprised to see her as she was to see them.
“Oh! Sorry,” she said, startled.

The third voice forced Christine to come to her senses. She jumped away from Alek and adjusted her straps as though she had been caught doing something shameful.
She composed herself.
"That's fine... um alright." she shook her head trying to clear it. "Are you lost?" she asked, then realized how ridiculous she sounded.
"Yes of course, the maze changes. Once the hunt is over the fairies usually will lead the guests out, but I can take you now if you'd like."

Alek suppressed the urge to snarl at the interloper and instead he straightened his coat and attempted to regain composure of his body. He had been so close and this girl had unwittingly foiled his plans. While Alek was not necessarily a patient man, he knew the importance of stalking one's prey which meant he could wait. He would have her yet.

"No, that's alright," Bellatrix said as she began to back out of the alley, but as she looked at the girl in front of her she realized this was the woman she had seen at the press conference about the serial killer. The woman who challenged the man who was pulling attention from Bellatrix's true love, her dark master.
"Actually, if you don't mind I've lost my fiancee and I suspect he'll be waiting for me at the exit." She put on her sweet demeanor as easily as she could put on a hat.

"Yes of course." Christine said relieved.
She stood by one of the hedges and uttered a quick incantation, then held her hand up as a flower emerged and pressed against her fingertips. A pathway then opened up behind the three of them.
"This way." she spared an unreadable glance toward Alek.

Bella walked alongside Christine as they made their way to freedom. "Forgive me," she said after a moment of silence, "you're Christine Montgomery aren't you? I believe I saw your press conference about that mad man."
She could feel Alek behind them, stiffening and taking a few steps a little quicker to close the space between himself and the girls. He was protecting Christine.
"You were so brave," Bella continued, glancing briefly over her shoulder at the man behind her.

Christine should have expected it, but of course things with Alek had occupied her mind.
"What? Oh...yes I am." she nodded not wanting to talk about her time with M.
"Thank you." she replied, "Reckless...is probably more accurate."

Alek opened his mouth to rebuke Christine's claims of recklessness but Bella beat him to it.
"Nonsense! It takes a truly powerful witch to stand up to a man like that."
She looked at Alek, inferring their relationship from the few minutes she had spent with them. "Surely you agree with me."
"I do," Alek replied, not sure where the woman was going with this.
It took no time at all for them to reach the exit with Christine's shortcut. The walked out onto the edge of the garden and Bella turned to thank Christine.
"I can't thank you enough. I'm sure my Roddy is just over there," she nodded her head in the direction of a group of party goers. She offered her hand. "Bella Black. It was lovely to meet you."

"And you." she said relieved that Bella wasn't going to comment further on her actions. She wasn't embarrassed by them, but modest perhaps. And she didn't fancy herself a hero. Far from it, particularly after her scene in the maze that told her she was trying to move on too quickly.
When Bella was gone she couldn't avoid Alek any more, she looked up at him, a bit shy.

He smiled at her, then offered her his arm. "Perhaps the band is still playing," he said, offering her an escape from having to discuss their would-be tryst in the maze. Alek wouldn't make another move like that tonight, for fear of scaring her off. He would play the gentleman as he had before. Delayed gratification.
