His reaction made her smile. "I'm glad."
"She was really awful," Lorelei confessed, as if it were a secret. "Thank you for being better than she was."
Lorelei relied on her brother, perhaps a little too much. But if it hadn't been for her she'd have died at the hands, or rather the fangs, of her mother three years ago. But Kas' parenting came long before that.

Kas laughed, "A rock was a better parent than our mother." he joked, then sobered.
"I'm sorry. You deserved better. We both did. I shouldn't have lied to you." he said once again cursing the woman and blaming himself. Kas had done the best he possibly could for the two of them, keeping Lor safe as a child while he and his mother turned. Raising Lor and trying to keep a roof over their heads, and trying to keep Lor's relative innocence, but it was no wonder she was lonely.
He sighed again, "She was...well she loved our father, but I think he broke her." Kas said honestly.
"She was never quite there after we left the pack."
These were honest confessions that Kas had often kept from his sister in the name of that innocence, but if she were to succeed in the pack, she would need to know the truth.

"Kas, I don't need to know it all. I don't want to. It's easier to just hate her, and him. If that's the pack we'll be going to then tell me only what I need to know to survive. Otherwise I'd like to continue on thinking about my family as I always have. It's just you. That's all I need for family."
She thought for a moment, and then made him an offer in an attempt to repay him for a lifetime of parenting her. "If it's too hard, if there are too many bad memories, we don't have to go. We can just stay here. As long as we're together, right?"

It had to be the Eiriksen pack. Alek was ambitious enough to try and take over the other packs and at the same time he wasn't the type to be a pawn in someone else's game. Other packs would fall in line to Alek, or the Darkness that was taking over. There might be some independent packs to consider, but Kas questioned the protection he would find there. If there was one thing he knew about the Eiriksen pack was that it was strong.
"No love. I've been thinking about this for a while now. I really do want you to be protected. It's time."

Lorelei's smile returned as she hugged him again. "You're the best big brother a girl could ask for." She couldn't deny the recent terrors had frightened her, but she also knew Kas would always keep her safe. He had saved her countless times before and Lor knew he would do so again. The protection a pack offered would lighten his load, as it were.

Kas walked a fine line. He was a brilliant potionsmaster, and he was on the cusp of something bigger than even his mentor could imagine. The truth was, he had long ago surpassed Damocles, and learned all he could learn from the older man, but Kas was grateful to him for essentially taking in a young pup and his sister. Even if Kas had been the primary recipient of most of the experiments.
But it was hard to have time for his work and protect Lor. He wanted to be with her at all times. A pack would give him the extra security he needed to do his work.

"Come on," Lorelei said after a few moments of silence. "Let's go out for dinner tonight to celebrate. I just need to change first, I smell like the shop." She kissed her brother on the cheek and without waiting for his response she hopped up from the couch and headed to her room.

Kas sighed watching her take off. Celebrate indeed. Though he was soon up and getting changed himself resigned to the path he had agreed to.
