It was Lyra's turn to compliment Julian as she wrapped her arms around him. "How do you do that?" she said with a grin, her hand stroking his cheek. Lyra was not a novice in this game but Julian could do things that no earthly creature had any right knowing how to do. His body was perfectly in tune with hers that they made music whenever they came together.
Lyra knew in the moment that she couldn't be without him any longer. Her place was in Julian's arms. She would have to end it with Mason and let the cards fall as they may. If she couldn't be with Julian then she wouldn't be with anyone else. There were no substitutes for his love.

"You." he answered, "The answer is you." he smiled back at her his grin growing wider, "You bring it out of me. You turn me into an animal, and then tame the beast within." he said still eyeing her as though she were a meal.

Lyra's ears grew hot and her cheeks reddened. She hadn't experienced the afterglow with him like this. Their previous encounters had resulted in terrible awkwardness and restrained tears. This euphoric sensation was a welcomed change.
"I missed your smile," she said as her own smile softened. They'd wasted so much time on pained looks but his ear to ear grin now told her the pain was over. At least for Julian, and that was all she had wanted to begin with.

He nuzzled her skin, "I missed you." he breathed as he inhaled the scent of her. He looked back at her face, then with a devious grin got to his feet. He lifted her then naked against his chest.
"I'm hungry." he told her by way of explanation.

Lyra whimpered at the distance between them, and the sudden coldness on her skin as he stood. But soon her petite frame was against his muscular chest once more and she sighed happily. She was too weak from their encounter to resist, and frankly she didn't want to. She'd go wherever he wanted her to.
As if it had been eavesdropping, Lyra's stomach growled on cue. She laughed. "Apparently I am, too."

His eyebrows wriggled playfully as a wolfish look told her exactly what he wanted to dine on. He smirked before setting her down on the kitchen counter top which was probably very cold in comparison to what they had been doing.
Julian had mainly dined on alcohol, but their activity left him rather starved.

Lyra gasped as her bare skin met the cool tile of the counter, making her jump slightly before Julian could release her completely. She managed to warm soon enough and watched as Julian moved about the kitchen. They had been in her kitchen the first time she let herself admit to him that she wanted him. It seemed almost poetic now that they were in his kitchen, Julian seemingly content with their affair for the first time.
"You haven't been eating," she said in a blissful tone that held only a note of worry. She was too happy to worry much, but his naked body was clearly thinner than when she had seen it last. He was more defined now and she bit her lip as she stared at his behind.

While it was true that he had lost weight, he had kept a ruthless routine to enhance his physique. Sometimes it was the only way to drive Lyra from his thoughts.
He removed a water bottle for Lyra then drank one himself before he answered her, "I've been working." he replied.

"Come here," she said as she took his arm and pulled him to her. It was clear she was much easier to move around than he was. "I'm sorry I didn't come sooner. I thought I was helping, but..." She didn't want to dwell on their past, but there were things that needed to be said. Things she still needed to take care of from their time apart.

He didn't want to talk. He didn't want to discuss what they were doing or the results or the regret. He wanted to lose himself in her the way he was losing himself in his artwork.
He pressed a strawberry to her mouth as a means of silencing her. "Open." he commanded.

Lyra understood what he needed and obliged. Her silence on the matter was just one of the gifts she would give him today. Her mind was full of too many thoughts at once but she would quiet them for Julian.
She opened her mouth as commanded and bit into the juicy strawberry. The sweetness lingered on her lips.

He gently pressed the strawberry further into her mouth, then traced her lips with the juice from the fruit. He pulled the strawberry away and down the column of her throat. He kissed her then indulging in the strawberry's taste against Lyra's skin.
If they were damned anyway by their desires, Julian was going to make it well worth the price they'd pay.

Her eyes closed, unable to reconcile the sensation against her skin with the image of the gorgeous man before her, both were too wonderful and overwhelmed her senses. She had to shut one out in order to survive.
Lyra had pictured this moment many times but her fantasies were nothingness compared to the reality of Julian's touch. He was commanding and firm, telling her what to do without saying a word. But he also had a tender touch that was seductive and lured her to him like a moth to a flame. She had only met this Julian briefly, each time he was followed by the noble Julian that broke her heart. Lyra had not spent much time with this real Julian and while his actions were surprising, and the intensity he showed was immense, she found she loved him just as much as the man she called her friend.

Julian was beyond caring at the moment. He was pressed against a beautiful woman, a woman he desired over all others, and that was the only thing he would focus on.
He told her in a thousand ways how much he desired her, that he thought she was beautiful, that he craved her.

They held each other, exhausted and satisfied. Lyra smiled happily, her eyes closed as she listened to his heartbeat. Moments ago it had been racing, but now the gentle thumping against her ear was slowing, returning to its natural rhythm. She kissed his chest before snuggling further into his arms.
They had desecrated several rooms over many hours, and startled one of the servants when the door Julian had pushed her against fell open and they tumbled, uninterrupted, onto the floor. Lyra couldn't get enough of him. She had spent so much time trying to rid herself of feelings for Julian but the second he touched her those feelings all came rushing back. She suddenly didn't understand how she had survived all these weeks without him.
"I don't want to be apart anymore," she said into his chest. There was a part of her that was waiting for the penny to drop, for the noble Julian to appear and tell her they couldn't do this again. She tried to silence the thought but she needed some confirmation from him. He wanted her and he craved her, but would he be with her?

Julian sucked in a breath sharply then exhaled slowly. "Lyra, I don't know how to make this work." he told her honestly.
"I didn't mean for today to happen, but this happens whenever I see you. I want to touch you, and if I touch you I can't stop. I've stayed away this long because in the end I know that there's nothing for us down this road and it's cruel to both of us to keep doing this. I don't know how to quit you, I don't want to quit you, but the longer this goes on, the worse it's going to hurt when I can't be what you need me to be."

She kept her head against his chest, not needing to see his eyes to know the look that resided there. But it wasn't fair. Julian was making all the decisions about their relationship, and Lyra felt as though she had no say at all. It's the 1970s, women have a say in these sorts of things!
"What is it you think I need, Julian? Because I've gone weeks without you and it hurt terribly. I tried replacing you but I still ended up here. Wouldn't it be better to have some peace before the pain, if the pain is inevitable?" She didn't agree that all roads led to heartache were they to pursue this, but for argument's sake she'd indulge his foolishness.

Julian didn't have his usual guilt ridden expression. He hated that he kept hurting her, and she thought she was hurting him. Everything hurt because everything felt so good.
"I'm selfish Lyra, I don't want you to replace me. A part of me would like to pretend I'm irreplaceable, but I want you to be happy. It's more than having to share me with a ghost, which you should not have to do. I've got a lot of baggage Lyra."

Lyra adjusted her position so that she sat on her knees, straddling him. She wrapped her arms around his neck as she stared into his eyes, surprised to not be met with the look she had been expecting.
"I don't need you to protect me and frankly you're doing a sh*t job of it as it stands." She smiled slightly. She wasn't criticizing him, she knew that everything they had gone through was in some attempt to preserve their hearts, but it wasn't working. It didn't hurt less. Quite the opposite, and Julian knew that.
"You are irreplaceable. I will never feel this way for anyone else. Baggage or not, you are who I want to be with, Julian Faust. And I will not be staying away from you any longer." She leaned forward and rested her forehead on his. "If this is all you will give me then I'll take it."

"You say that now. And you're right I am doing a sh*t job of protecting you and myself. But as much as it hurts right now, it can hurt more, and it would hurt more the further down this path we go."
Julian was struggling. He was so tempted to just give into what they both wanted, but the day he did that was the day he condemned them both.
