He sighed, a part of him was hurt that he had been able to trust her but she wasn't able to trust him. Still he had promised not to press and he wouldn't go back on his word.
"Alright love. Let's get to the carriage then." he told her offering his arm.

She took his arm as they walked toward the carriage. Lyra pouted at him, seeing the disappointment in his eye. "Don't be upset with me. It really is nothing." In an attempt to lighten the mood she added, "pretty girls get a pass, right? Just this once?"

"I won't pretend it doesn't bother me Lyra. And don't think I won't fight to learn what goes on inside that pretty head of yours. But I did say I wouldn't press. And I won't dwell on it anymore. I do intend to earn your trust though, eventually." he kissed her cheek and opened the door for her to get in the carriage.

She smiled at him. She didn't deserve Mason, and if it weren't for Nicolas only mere feet away she would have told him so. Instead she brought her hand to his chest for a moment and smiled, then turned at sat in the carriage.

The ride was only slightly awkward with Sam being upset with Nicolas for teasing Lyra in addition to what he had said earlier, Nicolas stiffly believing he was doing the right thing and therefore unrepentant of his actions, and Mason concerned about Lyra.
But the ride was short and soon they reached Le Repas Cher.
The door was opened for them and Nicolas stepped out first offering his arm to Samantha. Mason then did the same for Lyra.

Lyra sat in the carriage feeling the heat of everyone's emotions. All of their energy was focused in some way on her and she felt herself shrinking into the seat as moved along. Lyra was grateful for their quick arrival, but knew dinner would likely be much the same. When they arrived, she took Mason's hand and exited the carriage. Forgoing the traditional arm in arm stance, Lyra wrapped herself around his strong bicep and rested her head on his shoulder as they walked.

That simple hold alone did much to quell Mason's concerns, if not by disabusing him of concern, but distracting him by their public intimacy. He followed Sam and Nicolas into the high end restaurant, but kept his focus on his date. To the outside world they appeared very much the couple in the first stirrings of love.

Lyra wasn't sure she'd be able to eat anything, although the restaurant smelled wonderful. The carriage ride had twisted her stomach into knots, effectively reversing all of the calming effect Mason had had on her in the courtyard. She looked at Samantha and Nicolas, then quickly turned her attention to Mason. She didn't want to make her uneasiness worse, they hadn't even been seated yet there was a whole dinner to get through and she would need to space out her nerves.

They were sat immediately. Mason, Nicolas, and Samantha all had their private tables, but Sam pulled them all to hers insisting it was the best.
For his part Nicolas was charming once they were at the restaurant. He made small talk with Samantha and Mason, was polite to all the staff, even joked with the sommelier as he came to the table to suggest a wine. This was the man that Samantha adored, he was so at ease in their company.
Mason was jovial too, the earlier hiccup of the night nearly forgotten as the night progressed.

Lyra focused her attention on Mason and Samantha, though she was never rude to Nicolas and she certainly didn't ignore him. It was just easier for her if she focused on the people who she cared about. For the most part, she enjoyed herself. She even caught Samantha watching as Lyra and Mason made eyes at each other, which quickly made Lyra flush with embarrassment. She wasn't used to having an audience stare at her during her more intimate moments with a man, except when that man was Julian and they were purposely putting on a show for the other Slytherins. The demonstration with Mason was sincere, and although she knew Sam wasn't judging her she still felt hot under her watchful eyes.

If Nicolas was watching Lyra, it wasn't overt. He was the king of subtly and while his threat to expose her was true, he would wait until he was convinced either way before taking any actions. He was cautious, but at the same time absolutely ruthless.
"Dessert anyone?"

Lyra had found her appetite after all and while she still ate sparingly she certainly wouldn't say no to something sweet. At Nicolas' inquiry she turned to Mason. "Do you want to split anything? I wouldn't be able to finish anything by myself."

Mason, who could eat a horse, laughed and opened the dessert menu. He shut it soon after a brief perusal, "Why don't we ask the chef for his recommendation." he glanced back at Lyra, "I'll help you." he teased her.
Sam, who rarely ate or slept or exhibited any type of human weakness, agreed to a special dessert.
Nicolas smiled and hailed a waiter for them placing an order for the table.

As expected, the dessert was sinful. Lyra was plenty full now, and although she was having a lovely time with Sam and Mason, she was ready to go home and take a long, very hot shower. But Samantha had plans for them to go to the ballet. "Which ballet are we seeing?" she asked, looking to Sam.

Sam opened her mouth to speak, but Nicolas was quicker.
"Carmen." he said almost with a smirk. How appropriate.
Sam raised an eyebrow at her date, but said nothing. While those around her feigned having a good time, Lyra and Nicolas that is, she could feel the undercurrents of suspicion and anger. Initially Sam assumed it was from what Nicolas had said that Lyra overheard, but she began to wonder if the pair had truly come to terms or if there was still resentment.
Mason was oblivious to the cause behind the tension though he too was perceptive. He trusted that he would learn in due time what all the fuss was about.

Lyra had, of course, seen Carmen before and she had very much enjoyed it. But as Nicolas' sly smirk suggested, tonight she would have very different feelings toward the story. If her "conversation" with Nicolas had been even a week earlier Lyra would have thought that he chose this ballet specifically to taunt her. But as it turned out the turn of events was simply a very poorly timed coincidence. Much like her deciding to cancel the date to save Nicolas an uncomfortable evening, only to overhear Nicolas' hurtful suspicions about her. Just once I'd like a happy coincidence, she thought to herself as she looked at her hands.

Mason enjoyed the ballet, he enjoyed watching quidditch more, but he was no stranger to the arts.
"Excellent." he said in response to Nicolas' answer. Though he noticed Lyra had a different response.
"We'll get the carriage." Sam said pinching Nicolas' leg. He moved then and nodded to his companions. He stood waiting for Sam to join him and left the table.
"Is everything alright Lyra?"

No. Everything was not okay. She felt as though Nicolas was out to get her, and while he claimed that wasn't the case, it didn't change how Lyra was perceiving his actions. Nicolas may very well have just been looking out for his friends, but his words had struck a nerve with Lyra. If he didn't believe and accept her, no one else in society would either. If she was going to lose Mason, she might as well lose him now and save her the heartache of growing more fond of him before he finds out the horrible truth about her.
"I need to tell you something," she said very softly. "And I understand if you don't want to see me anymore, but I think it would be better to tell you now and spare us the pain later on." She didn't look at Mason as she spoke, she focused intently on her hands as she fidgeted with them in her lap.
"I don't have a great relationship with my parents," this he already knew, but the 'why' she had been vague about. "They disowned me and kicked me out after I graduated. And until recently, until Samantha gave me the job at Enchanted, I...well...I had nothing."

Mason turned toward her to give her his full attention. He wanted to show her that she could trust him, and apparently he succeeded, but he wasn't sure what her revelation was supposed to prove.
"Why are you telling me this?"

"Because I really like you. And I don't want you to find out later and think that I was only interested in dating you for your money or your connections." She bit her lip, waiting to hear his disbelief in her statement.
