Geoffrey stared at Kate blankly, unable to believe what he was hearing. He had heard the name Penny Young. She, along with a young student named Sophia and another girl, had all been killed, and they were saying it was by the same man. A serial killer. Not even a death eater; which he could have at least expected. This guy was somehow worse than even Lord Voldemort.
And now this creep might have Christine.
He clung to the word "might" because as far as it sounded to him there wasn't any actual proof that the person who took her was the serial killer. It was strange to think that he'd actually rather have her taken by death eaters, but there it was. Death eaters would at least know the strategic advantage of holding Christine Montgomery alive as a hostage. She was from a wealthy, pureblood, ancient family, with many connections to powerful people, Ministry officials, oh, and a lot of aunts and uncles and cousins who were aurors. But this nut job clearly didn't care about any of that. And that made him a whole lot more dangerous.
Geoffrey went through about a dozen emotions in a few short moments--confusion, shock, disbelief, fear, desperation, denial, hope, and finally settling on anger.
How DARE this guy take his sister? Damn it all, he was tired of being afraid. After the Imperius attack when Lyle Inophen, as he now knew the man had been called, tried to get him to kill Riley, Geoff had spent months being traumatized and afraid and guilty and sick. He shut himself up in the house for weeks, tearing himself up inside. He'd been angry at Roland for his whole "faked death" thing and for leaving Riley out here to deal with the aftershocks, but now he realized how brave Riley had been. She had taken it all on her shoulders, put up a good act in front of the rest of the world, while inside she wassailing apart. She had been willing to risk everything for love, and what had Geoffrey done? He'd gotten caught up in it and chose to sulk and whine. He was suddenly ashamed of himself for being so weak, while his sister needed him. She had been drifting for months, just as he had, and neither of them had been able to be there for each other. But he was the older brother, and he should have been there for her. He should have been stronger.
He had no idea what she'd been up to these past few weeks, or if he could have help prevent her from ending up on this path, but he made a silent vow to himself that if she managed to make it back to them unscathed, he would be there for her, and he would protect her against any foes. He was going to be stronger for her.
He had shed a few tears at first, but now a kind of steely determination took over, and he held his mother tight. "Don't worry, Mum, she's going to be all right. I can feel it. She's a Montgomery, dammit."
He looked to Kate, imploring her with his eyes. "What can I do to help?"
