Caroline's face set and her body froze. Her eyes turned so cold they may as well have been ice. Was Jordan accusing her of not liking their life? "How dare you," she said, her words low and her tone dangerous. She loved their house and their back yard and she even loved her inability to cook. It hurt inexplicably that he would insinuate otherwise. "It pisses me off because I don't like people insulting how I or we choose to live. It's rude and ignorant and she's just terrible. You're terrible for suggesting I agree with her!"
No. The only thing she was unhappy with was the growing distance between them and the fact that she had nothing left to give Jordan. She wanted a baby with him, and it was never going to happen.
And then, of course, he had to bring it up. Her hands went in the air and she rolled her eyes. This was getting ridiculous, and old. Of course, if she ever gave him a real answer, they might not keep going over it.
"I never said no to a kid. Just not... now. Now's a bad time. Why do you keep insisting on bringing it up?"

Jordan held up his hands in defeat. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't have said that. I didn't mean that you agreed with her... I just wanted to make sure. I want you to be happy, and Merlin knows you haven't been lately."
It broke his heart a little, though. If she was unhappy with their life, he would have found some way to fix it. They could get another house, a gardener... heck, he'd hire a cook if it would make her feel better. But if it wasn't their life she was unhappy with, then maybe she was unhappy with him. What could he do about that?
But the baby thing... that was definitely a big issue. He had no idea just how much, of course; he only knew that she seemed to get angry whenever he brought it up. She kept saying "not yet," but he couldn't understand why she was holding back. What was she waiting for?
"Well, it's kind of the elephant in the room, isn't it? Viola's having a baby, and we're both thinking about it... and I'm tired of tiptoeing around the subject. I don't understand why now is such a bad time. When is it going to be a better time?"

"Viola doesn't deserve a baby!" Caroline shot back, as though that was the point of this argument. She knew it wasn't, but she hated her sister in law for being able to hang this over her. If she only disliked Viola before the look on Jordan's face when he heard she was pregnant, Caroline completely loathed her now.
She was sure, when he found out that she couldn't give him a child, he was going to stop loving her. And inevitably, he would find out. This was a secret that eventually, he was going to figure out on his own.
She rubbed her forehead for a moment, trying to think of any kind of answer to his question that would make sense. "I don't know. Okay? I don't. If you want a baby so badly, let's just go make one right now."
That route, if he ever took her up on it, would eventually dead end, too.

Oh, yeah, that really put him in the mood. He sighed, his shoulders slumping in defeat. "Wow, you're just overwhelming me with your enthusiasm," he said. "No, I don't want it this way. I want..." he trailed off, staring at her. He felt like there was something she was trying to tell him, something that he should understand, but that he was totally missing. He used to be able to understand what was bothering her and how to fix it, but lately he was just at a loss.
"I want things to be the way they used to be. When you could tell me anything, and we didn't argue about every little thing." Or the big things, like having children. They hadn't talked about it in the beginning, but they'd certainly tried for a baby often enough. He was really starting to think that maybe there was something wrong with him, and that was why they didn't have a baby yet.
He dropped down on the sofa, burying his face in his hands for a moment. "Come on, just sit down and we'll talk, OK? Let's just forget about Viola."

"You're overwhelming me with your.... apathy." It was the wrong word, and she knew that. Sarcasm would have been the next best fit, and even that wasn't quite right. She was just snapping, being defensive. She could have calmed down if they were fighting over almost any other subject, but this was something she had no answer for, and him pushing it just set her on edge. Nothing about this situation was ever going to be easy, no matter how it turned out.
"I tell you everything. I tell you about Viola, and you turn on me. How is that fair, Jordan? How does that make me want to tell you anything else?" She was just scared, and she wrapped her arms around herself in a motion that could have been mistaken for crossing them and closing herself off.
She frowned when he seemed to give in, but stayed where she was. "I don't want to talk. I think I've said more already than you wanted me to."

Jordan sighed again, and slumped down so that his head was practically touching his knees. He was losing this fight, mostly because he had no idea what they were actually fighting about. He was just so tired...
"I'm sorry," he said desperately. "I'm sorry I wasn't more... supportive. I don't give a damn about Viola or her baby. I hope it has three heads. I just..."
He trailed off and looked up at her, wishing he knew what to say to make this all better. He used to be able to do that, back when they were in school and her biggest problems were her family or her grades. He couldn't quite escape the notion that maybe right now he was her biggest problem. This went far beyond Viola and her mutant spawn.
"Just come here and let me hold you for a while, OK? We don't even have to talk."

Caroline was too keyed up at the moment to let him hold her, but he was looking defeated, and it was sucking that angry passion right out of her. She felt something grip tight in her chest, and she took a deep, audible breath.
What she wanted to do was escape to the bathroom and cry for things she couldn't tell Jordan. Viola and her stupid child were all she could think about, and how she should have been able to give one to Jordan by now. When she was 17, they never needed to have that conversation about kids. She wanted them to be a family so badly, with lots of little ones. And now Viola was getting to live that dream.
She had to make a move though, and it was either walk away from Jordan now, or give in to him. She was still angry, one edge from that visit, but she took another breath and sat down on the couch near him- not necessarily within arm's length, but at least she hadn't turned and left him.
"I hate her."

"I know you do," Jordan said, his voice heavy with sympathy. Honestly, he couldn't blame her. Viola had never been openly nasty to him, but her sugary-sweet fake niceness didn't fool him. He had heard her backhanded insults, mostly directed at Caroline, on several occasions. He could be a bit naive at times, but even he couldn't miss the underlying malice.
"She's jealous of you, you know. You're beautiful, you don't have to work, and you have a husband who would do anything for you and doesn't spend most of his time out of town. So she tries to make you feel the same way by pointing out what she has that you don't. She wants to upset you, and you can't let her win."

Their fights always seemed to end up like this. They would be angry and frustrated and she would get scared that she was going to push him away, so she'd give in just a little. He would calm down, they would talk, and maybe the rest of the night was tense and heavy, but the fight would be over. It happened like that every time, and this time seemed to be no different.
She looked up at him, her hands folding in her lap. She could point out flaws with his argument... Viola certainly didn't have to work. She didn't have the energy to negate him though, and though it was weight with emotion, her lips curled into a soft little smile when he basically said he'd do anything for her. She knew that, too, but she just didn't know if it would always be that way.
"She didn't even want children. Only because Barry does."
