Elijah was glad that no one he knew was around. In fact, the only person he actually knew was Dylan. There were a few people he recognized their faces, but couldn't recall their names. Names were not always important so Elijah chose not to remember most of them.
The way Dawn looked at him, he wasn't aware if she knew the expression that was on her face or not, but they were more alike than he originally thought. Maybe she wasn't exactly the same, but there was something there.
"You probably would be better at it than you think," he offered. That was okay to say right? It's what he heard other people say to the other in order to attempt to make them feel better. Elijah wasn't any good with this, but he was trying.
"Can't miss the place, can you," he said with a laugh that almost sounded like a bark. Elijah was trying to make Dawn smile if he could.

Dawn blushed lightly. She took his comment as a compliment, and for a very long time, she wasn't used to getting many of those. It wasn't that Gretchen's pack hadn't been nice to her, because they had been as nice as they probably knew how to be. But they had treated her like an invalid, and maybe that's what she was. They had worked to protect her, but they had protected her so much that she'd never been able to properly heal, and for a long time had honestly believed she never would. If they could see her now, they would certainly be shocked at how different she had become.
"Thank you," she said. "But for now I am happier working in the kitchen. Maybe some day I could try waiting tables... apparently, the waitresses, as they are called, get something called tips--extra money from the customers that they get to keep."
She had no idea whether he had ever heard of such a concept before, but it was definitely new to Dawn. Many things were new to her, really, and she found each new thing she learned to be completely fascinating.
Laughing at his next comment, Dawn nodded. "Yes, it does stand out, doesn't it? I don't know if it looks all that royal, though. Maybe the dragon should be wearing a crown."
They had now reached the back door, which led straight to the kitchen. Dawn fumbled in her pocket to find her keys, finally pulling them out and unlocking the kitchen door. "You can bring those things in here," she said.

Elijah didn't realize that his laugh sounded as rough as it did, but it didn't seem to bother Dawn. There weren't many times he laughed. It almost felt foreign that he was still being nice as he was. Elijah knew that there were going to be rules he was going to have to follow if he were to help at this place. He didn't know exactly how he was going to be judged by his clothes. Naturally, he didn't really care what other people really thought about him, but for a little bit, he wished he was a bit more neat.
Following Dawn inside, the smells of the restaurant filled his nose. The smells were amazing and Elijah allowed his eyes to wonder for a few moments then he looked back to Dawn. He felt completely out of place standing where he was. For a moment, he felt like a dog that was begging for food. In a way, he was a dog begging for food, but in a very different way.
"Smells nice in here," he said after a moment of silence.

Dawn beamed at him. He had an odd look about him, rather like a caged animal. It wasn't that he looked restless or uncomfortable, but he definitely seemed out of place here, like he was in unfamiliar surroundings.
"I love the way it smells in here," she agreed. "Even when there's no food cooking at all, it's like the scent still lingers."
Maybe it was just her heightened sense of smell, but she could usually pick out three or four different scents in the kitchen at any given time. Today it was the smell of ginger that seemed most prominent, but she could also detect a little soy sauce and the warm scent of beef. It was enough to make her hungry.
"I'll be right back," she told Elijah. "I'm going to see if Mr Wang is around, and I'll ask him if he has any work you can do."

"Okay," he said a little gruffly as he nodded his head. Elijah looked around as the smell filled his nose. A lot of scents he never really smelled before filled the room. For once, he heard his stomach growl just lightly.
For a moment, Elijah questioned himself as to why he was here. Being in a place like this was not like him at all. This was an indoors job. He was never indoors. Staying indoors usually drove him crazy, but yet here he stood. He usually felt like he was this wild animal, but right now he felt like he was a little calmer. Naturally, he wasn't even sure of what he was supposed to do. Hopefully he wouldn't have to actually bring food out to people. There was a possibility he could do work in the kitchen.
