"And I like taking care of you," Ricki said before she could stop herself. But she quickly covered this by laughing. "I guess it's the motherly instinct in me. I don't have any pets or anything, so I'll just take care of you. Someone has to, after all... I don't know how you survived this long without me."
But despite her attempt to turn her comment into a joke, she was fully aware that it felt forced. She had come a little too close to admitting how she felt about him, and she found she couldn't quite meet his eye. She didn't want to see the rejection that she imagined would be there.

In a way, what Ricki said hurt a little. Milo was far too blind to see anything passed being friends with her because he didn't notice her hints. It almost seemed to make Milo feel like that there was no hope in Ricki caring for him more than a friend, but he couldn't give up. Something was telling him to keep on, but he didn't know when he was going to attempt to do anything about it. He was scared of the rejection more than anything.
Milo gave a very light short laugh. "Let's hope you never get any pets. After all, I like you taking care of me and I don't want to have to compete for your attention." He was trying just as hard as she was to make it sound like he was joking. If Ricki did pay attention, she would have seen the answer that would have made everything change. However, that was their problem. Neither of them would really pay attention to the other.

(Ugh, these two are so frustrating!!!)
Ricki was really beginning to feel awkward. She couldn't really even say why, but something felt... wrong. She thought she'd been too forward, too obvious in her feelings for him, and she could feel him pulling away. Was he starting to realize? Was he trying to tell her that it wasn't going to happen? Ricki couldn't deny it; the thought that he would push her away if he knew was painful. As long as he didn't know, she could dream, and hope, and pretend. She didn't want to lose that... but maybe she had to. Maybe it was time to give up the dream and move on.
"I'm never home enough for pets," was all she could manage to say. "But... er... we should probably go over our caseload. and get ready for out meeting today..."

If only Milo would just come out and tell her, then he wouldn't have to worry about a thing. However, in his mind, if he did tell her, he'd have everything to worry about. He didn't want her to reject him, and he didn't want work getting awkward either. Milo was going to do what he could to hang on to her at the moment. Sometimes he thought maybe she had the same feelings for him, but then again sometimes it seemed as if she didn't.
Milo wanted to continue on with the conversation, but Ricki changed it. He sighed as he slowly sat up from slouching in the chair. "I suppose you're right," he said in an almost defeated voice. "We probably should. Don't want others to think we're failing on our job, do we?" Milo smiled at Ricki again and then put his hands on the arm rest of the chair.

Was she imagining that disappointed tone in his voice? Maybe it was just because he didn't feel like working right now... She honestly couldn't imagine any other reason he would be disappointed. After all, the conversation felt so awkward to Ricki, and talking about work would make it all normal again.
She took a breath and looked down at her agenda. Besides the woman who thought her boyfriend was cheating on her, there was also a kid who had called the other day, wondering if they could find his missing father, and an elderly woman who wanted them to find the person who scammed her out of her life savings. They were all pretty routine cases, and none of them needed both of their attention. They could easily split up for the day, which might be what they both needed.
"OK, when Ms. What's-her-name comes in, I'll meet with her and try and calm her down," she said. "There's a kid named Richard Lucas coming in at 11, he's looking for his missing father. Do you wanna take him, and I'll take care of the old lady looking for the scam artist?"

Life was never going to be simple for Milo and Ricki. There was going to always be something there and Milo was not going to be making a move at the moment. He should, but he was scared too. If he was smart enough and would open his eyes, he would have seen a long time ago that she really did feel the same way. If he had seen it, then he would have already made a move, but he was completely blind when it came to Ricki and maybe that should tell her something.
Now that his mind was focusing back on work, he felt a little more at ease. "I'll take the kid. It'll probably be easier that I do that, since you know exactly what to say to the women. Apparently I ruffled the last woman's feathers who asked for our help, so I will let you stay on that one. However, if you need anything, just let me know and you know I'll help you."
Milo moved to stand up and then readjusted the chair after he stood up. "I'll be in my office, so just yell if anything is going on."

The big problem between them was that Ricki was just as blind as Milo was when it came to his feelings for her. If just one of them would open their eyes and make a move, it would have been much easier on both of them, but they knew each other so well that they couldn't believe that one might be keeping secrets from the other.
"Oh, come now," she teased. "You're better at talking to women than that. And I know you can probably deal with an old lady. I definitely need to talk to What's her name, though, and the timing of it all means it's better for you to take the kid. But believe me, any woman would be lucky to have someone as charming and handsome as you handling her case."
She winked after this last bit, not even realizing that she was flirting with him.

Ricki's comment caused Milo to laugh. "I might be getting a little rusty," he said teasingly. "Although sometimes those women can't deal with the honesty of the situation. That last one hit me with her purse." He smiled and shook his head at the memory.
Hearing that Ricki thought he was handsome caused Milo to almost, almost give a shy like smile. Instead he put on his usual confident smile. "Oh, so you think I'm charming and handsome now, hm?" Milo knew he was just keeping them from work longer, but he couldn't resist. He winked back at her.
"Well if you happen to need this charming and handsome man, or get bored, just come in for a visit, or call for me."

"You were probably getting fresh with her," Ricki teased. She'd seen him flirt with other women, but she guessed he just saw her as "one of the guys." It was frustrating to her. Sometimes, just to see if he would notice, she would wear a really nice dress... something low-cut or tight-fitting, paired with high heels. Or she'd change her hair or wear a little more makeup than usual. She had no idea that he noticed her even without these things, and that when she did these things she was actually torturing him. She just couldn't see what was right in front of her.
"You know you're handsome and charming," she joked, returning his wink. "You never let me forget it."
She really didn't want him to leave... she wanted him to stay and keep joking around with her. But they did have to get some work done eventually, and the clients would be coming in soon.
"Oh, and Milo?" she called after him. "Thanks again for the tea."
