Aislinn let out a laugh as her father hugged her. Maybe it was just one of those 'girly' moments she heard a few people talk about, or maybe it was just the fact that her father hugged her in the middle of the coffee shop. She knew that Mason had been coming in for awhile, because every morning she would usually be the one to serve him. She wasn't exactly sure what made her finally decide to say something. Every day, she wanted to speak to him, but she never knew what to say other than double checking his order and taking money.
"Thanks dad," she said once she dropped her arm from hugging him. "His name is Mason Broderick. He goes to the university near here."

Joe smiled approvingly. "Mason. That's a good, strong name."
He was positively itching to ask her questions and offer advice. But he also knew that she wouldn't want to make a big deal out of this. She had never reached out to anyone before, and the idea of actually asking a boy out was something Joe was sure Aislinn had never considered before. But the more fuss he made over it, the more likely it would be for her to shut down, and he didn't want that to happen.
"I know you probably don't want to talk about clothes with your old dad, but if you need something nice to wear, I could give you a little extra money. Maybe you and Chase could go and pick something out together."

Aislinn gave her father a shy smile, then laughed. For a moment, she could picture asking her father what to wear for dinner. She knew that would be an interesting time, but now that she thought about it, she had no idea what she wanted to wear. The only things she really had as a few nice things, but that was it. Out of the nice things she had, she didn't think would do going out with Mason.
"I think I might take you up on that," she said. "I have to make sure I have something to wear that I won't change my mind about ten times over."

Joe smiled, but it was a secret sort of smile. Being a man, he knew something that Aislinn didn't know. The truth was, men didn't really care what women wore on dates. Whatever she wore, she would look beautiful, and Joe was quite certain that it would be the same for Mason. He would like Aislinn in whatever she decided to wear. Really, when it came down to it, all the fuss women went through trying to decide what to wear on dates was for the woman's benefit--if a woman knew she looked good, then she would be more confident and would have a better time. That was what Sandra had told him once.
"OK, just let me know. I can give you some money at the end of the day, and I'm sure Chase would love to go with you... She'll probably be in later this afternoon."
