Severus woke up early that morning he quickly showered and dressing, taking care to keep his hair from curling. It was always a bother, but his hair held a natural curl that he couldn't seem to get rid of, so he weighed it down so that it wouldn't. he slunk into the common room and thought of Justine, they hadn't really spoken in a long while. He blamed Jason of course.

Justine came downstairs, in a miserable mood. She was still upset about her fight with Jason, and was pondering breaking up with him for good. She was tired of him telling her that her friends weren't good enough--as if she had enough of those to spare--and that she shouldn't wear her hair a certain way. He was so controlling and it annoyed her. She was still thinking about all of this as she came downstairs and spotted Severus off in a corner. She looked around and saw that Jason wasn't around, so she walked over to Severus. "Hey," she said casually. "How are you doing?"

Severus looked up and thought 'well think of the devil' "Shocked that you're talking to me, for one and feeling a little less harassed than i was yesterday. How ...well I know how you've been, Jason doesn't really keep things private does he?" he asked looking up at Justine. In a way she reminded him of his mother, dealing with the fighting but never leaving. "You're better than he is." he said looking down into his lap.

"I know," she said softly. "But when we're alone... it's different. But sometimes I think he's ashamed of me. He treats me badly when other people are around." She sat down and looked at him sadly. "Am I ugly, Severus?"

Severus flushed and quickly looked up at her and then to his hands. "No." he said squeakily. he laughed nervously and said "If he's ashamed than he's a bigger idiot than Lucius." he said feeling his ears burn.

Justine smiled shyly. "Well, thanks, Severus. It's just that sometimes, I feel ugly. And stupid and awkward and... out of place. I think the hat was wrong, I don't belong in Slytherin. I'm just a mousy orphan girl who doesn't know who her family is. But I'm glad that I have you for a friend, anyway. And you know what? If Jason tells me not to talk to you again, I'll just tell him... I'll just tell him to shut up!" She nodded decisively.

"Well, I mean, look at some of the other people in Slytherin," she said, lowering her voice and looking around to be sure they were completely alone. "You know, like... Lucius Malfoy and Bellatrix Black. They're mean people... mean and angry and full of themselves. I'm not like that. I guess I have a temper... but I definitely don't think I'm any great thing, like they do. So why am I here?"

She frowned. "Well, what does it mean, then? Jason's always saying I should act like a Slytherin, so what does that mean? Because if it means I should act like Malfoy, then I'm not interested."

"Well... Slytherin is cunning, and whatever we do, good or bad is justifies the means, as long as we get what we want to achive. We are Ambition, not only just ansestry... If it all rested on blood...you and I would probably be brother and sister or first cousins at least." he said placing his hands on his chin.

Justine made a face. "That's gross. If everyone was all related, they couldn't get together. Of course, I could be related to you, for all I know. I don't know anything about my family. What's your family like, Severus?"

"Oh, I'm sorry," Justine said, sensing his unhappiness. "Maybe it's not always better to have a family than not to have one, huh?" She sighed. "I think my family must be dead. I hope they are, anyway. I'd hate to think that they're still alive out there and just want nothing to do with me. Better to think they're dead."

Severus instantly broke into a grin "actually yes I have a very good reason to be happy about today. " he leaned in closer to Justine's ear to whisper "I spiked all of Malfoy's soaps, lotions and hair potions... he should be bright pink by feast time." he said with a barely containted laugh.
