It all sounded so very innocent, and it reminded her of her days at Hogwarts. Except that she hadn't even been that innocent back at Hogwarts. Oh, Merlin, what was she thinking? She had been with so many guys... how could Austin not be disgusted with that?
Maybe the thing to do was to tell him everything up front, and let him decide whether he still wanted to be with her after that. That way, if he didn't want her anymore, she wouldn't be so emotionally involved that her heart would be broken.
Yes, that was it. He wanted to know her, so she would tell him everything.
"No, that's OK," she said. "I think... I think I know what to do now."

"Good." Chloe was relieved that Paige might have ended up having some kind of optimism about her situation. Of course everything wasn't sunshine, rainbows, and flowers, but hopefully for Paige things would end up working out.
"Will you let me know how things go?" Even though the two girls had been through a not so nice relationship with each other, Chloe wanted some kind of relationship with her sister. That was if Paige wanted some kind of relationship with her. "I'm usually here but if not I'm at the house. Everyone that is there is friendly."

Paige couldn’t help it; she still felt nervous at the idea of visiting Chloe’s house. Even if she was trying to change, she still had her prissy ways about her, and she wasn’t sure she would be able to fit in with such a crowd. But she was able to smile a little more convincingly this time.
“Maybe I’ll do that some time. Or… oh! Maybe if… if things work out with me and this guy, we could all go out on a double date. You and your guy, and me with mine. I would like to meet this guy of yours.”

"A double date?" Chloe knew that if she asked Karl about it, he would probably go with it. She hoped that things would go good with Paige and whoever this guy was. Paige seemed a little happy, even if she was confused, when she spoke of this person.
"We can do that," she said. "I'm sure that Karl wouldn't mind going, of course I'll talk to him about it first. You can come by and let me know when and everything is good and we can come up with a date."

"Karl?" Paige repeated, a slight smile on her face. She wasn't sure if Chloe had mentioned the name of the man she was seeing before, but this was the first time it really hit her. She could almost imagine him. He was probably rugged and handsome, and for some reason she pictured him with light hair and tanned skin.
"Tell me about him," she said eagerly. Maybe if she heard about him, she would feel a little less uneasy about her own situation with Austin.

The last time she spoke about Karl, it was with Becky. It wasn't too long ago that Becky died and Becky had been the only full human friend she had that knew about her secret. Paige knew about Chloe's secret too but she hadn't really considered Paige a friend but now that view changed.
"He can be a little rough around the edges," she started, "but he means well. He's one of the nicest guys I've ever met. He's also the type that you ask him to do something and he'll do it." Chloe smiled lightly. "He's just a sweetheart really and he's protective and loyal."

Paige’s smile was sad. Chloe felt almost like a stranger to her, and it was all Paige’s fault. Why had she worked so hard to push her twin away from her? They should have shared more conversations like this one. They should have been as close as two people could possibly be. But Paige had let her jealousy and insecurity push Chloe away.
And yet in spite of all that, when Paige needed someone to talk to, Chloe had opened her arms to her. Paige really didn’t think she deserved her sister’s kindness, but for once, she would accept it without question. And maybe, some time, she would be able to return the favor.
“He sounds wonderful,” she said. “I’m glad you have him. He… well, he couldn’t possibly sound more different from Austin. But then, we’re pretty different, too. Austin is a musician. He’s sweet and playful and fun, but he’s also a perfect gentleman. I’m just…. Not used to gentlemen.”

If Paige wanted to, Chloe was willing to become close with her sister. It was never too late to try to start something. Maybe this conversation was going to help them.
A light smile made its way on her face to as Paige spoke of the guy she liked. "I'm sure that you'll get used to it. Those are hard to come by but there are some out there. Besides, you'll figure everything out. You know that I'm here if you need me. If you need me in the middle of the night, I'll come just as long as its not on well, you know."

Paige didn't know what to say. How could Chloe be so accepting? Paige had never even tried to be close to her sister; she was always too busy resenting her. And yet Chloe was willing to help her no matter what. She was a better person than Paige could ever hope to be.
"I'm sorry," she said softly, looking up at her twin. "It's my fault we're strangers. I just... I was always so jealous of you. And I just don't know how you... you can just accept me after all of that."

She gave a light smile. "When you have something that seems to force you to become so kind of outcast there will be people there willing to accept you. Those people show you a kindness that no one can explain. That will change you and it will open you up more. You will see things differently and when there is someone that comes to you and is sincere about what has been going on, you know that you have to take a step back and know that things can change. It's never too late for anything to change."
Chloe reached across the table for her sister's hands. "It's not too late for us to become close. I'm willing to do so if you are. Things are changing and I want at least my sister there. Goodness knows mum and dad are not going to come around. Besides, every one needs a friend or two right?"

Somehow, without ever realizing it was happening, Paige was starting to change. As much as she had loved dancing, the lifestyle had been toxic to her. It had made her more selfish than ever, caused a fierce competitiveness in her, had caused her to diet and exercise herself to the point of illness, and had put her in the path of men who only wanted to use her and throw her away. All of those things had ripped her self-esteem to shreds. And now, with a new job, a new home, and a new man… she was starting over fresh. And while she was still fierce and competitive in her work, it was somehow healthier. At the very least, she didn’t have to starve herself for it.
This conversation with Chloe wouldn’t have been possible a year ago. She had still been too angry, too defensive, and she never would have given Chloe a chance. But now… Paige was glad that things were starting to change.
She looked up at her sister, and for the very first time, she could see herself in Chloe’s eyes. Maybe they weren’t so different after all. “I’m willing,” she said.

A wider smile appeared on Chloe's face. There was a feeling of excitement there. Paige was willing to start to have a decent relationship with her and maybe they could end up being closer than either one of them ever thought.
"Great," she said. She wasn't going to propose that they go off and do all sorts of things. After all, she didn't want to push them too fast. Things would happen as time went on. "We'll have a lot of fun together as time goes on. Plus, you know that I'm here whenever you need someone to talk to."

It occurred to Paige at this point that this was, in large part, something she had needed for a very long time. Someone to confide in, to ask for advice, to just vent to. She had needed a friend. And what better friend could a girl have but her twin sister? For too long, she had let her own petty jealousy keep her from the one person in the world who could help her. And the same had always been true of every other girl she had known, both in school and in her career. Dancing, in particular, had been a world of gossip and backstabbing, and friends were pretty hard to come by. No wonder she had no friends and no one to talk to. It was a lonely existence.
Paige sniffled and squeezed Chloe's hands. "I've needed you for a long time... I was just too stubborn to ask for help."

"Things will be different now," she replied. Growing up, Chloe knew that even then Paige didn't have that many friends. She did feel horrible for her but there was nothing that could have been done because Paige was too stubborn then as well.
Maybe Paige would get used to the fact that there was a pack of werewolves that lived in the same house and that there was no harm going to be done. She felt sure that they would welcome Paige into the house without a problem, but she knew that it was going to take a little more time for that to settle with her.
"You know, we could go for a girl's day tomorrow if you wanted to. Maybe go shopping or something."

A doctor had once told her that if she was really going to get better, she had to really want to get better. For a long time, she really didn't. She had been angry at the world, furious at her knee for giving out and preventing her from dancing, and as a result, she had become more self-destructive than ever. But now, finally, she was in a good place, and she wanted to keep getting better. She wanted to fix the problems in her relationship with Chloe, she wanted to have friends, and she wanted to be good enough for Austin. Finally, it felt like she was taking positive steps in the right direction.
"I'll have to check my schedule," she said. "If no big stories come up, and I'm able to finish my assigned story early enough, then... yeah. Maybe we could do something. I don't think we've ever had a girls' day out."

"I don't think we really have either but it could be good. I don't have to work tomorrow so I'll be at the house." Chloe sensed before that the idea of coming to the house made Paige uneasy. "So you could just owl if you want, or you can just come over to let me know." She figured that giving options would be better.
"Even if we can't do it tomorrow, we could find another day to go."

It would probably take Paige a little while to be comfortable with the whole werewolf thing. It was taking a very big step for her to swallow her pride and talk to Chloe at all after all the jealousy she had felt towards her sister in the past, and the werewolf thing... well, it still gave her pause. She thought it best to ease into things one step at a time... first get used to Chloe, then meet the boyfriend... then maybe she would feel brave enough to visit the house.
"I'll owl you," she said. "If we can't do it tomorrow, I usually have Sundays off."

Saturday night wasn't going to be a full moon so Sunday would be a good day to go if Paige couldn't make it tomorrow. "Sounds perfect." The fact that Paige was willing to steps to have anything to do with her was even perfect. Sure it would take time and Chloe knew that but just the fact that she would have her biological sister there made a huge difference because not many people in her situation really had that chance.
"I usually have Sundays off as well unless we're too short handed but we should be okay."

It would take time, but maybe one day, Paige would be able to really open up to her sister, and tell her all about the things she’d been through. She needed to be able to tell those things to someone, to unburden her soul. It was truly the only way she’d ever really be able to heal and build up her own self-esteem. If Austin really wanted her, then Paige wanted to be worthy of him. As of now, she did not feel that she was.
But it was going to be a slow process, and it would take one step at a time. Shopping sounded like a nice place to start.
“OK,” she said. “I’ll let you know when I know what my schedule is.”
Impulsively, she reached out and took her sister’s hand. “Thank you, Chloe.”

She was excited that Paige was so willing to make a change. This was the reason that Chloe was willing to try and make things better between them. They had started off right, at least in her opinion.
"Sounds great. I can make sure that somehow I can work my schedule around yours." She was smiling then looked down as Paige took her hand. "It's what sisters do," Chloe said looking back up to Paige. She widened her smile and then squeezed her hand. Maybe now things could start to look better.
