Hestia was finally to the point of working one on one with an actual auror. It seemed like forever, but she finally got here. No more group training and orientation. Now it was real time action. And she was excited. Maybe it was the tom boy in her (not that she wasn't girly) or maybe it was just her adventurous streak, but the thought of actually being out there and catching bad guys seemed pump her up for this even more.
Hestia paced patiently around the conference room, waiting for some one to show. She sat down and stood repeatedly over the course of what seemed like an hour or so, but was actually only five or ten minutes. She sighed and took a sip from her bottled water. She ended up standing by the fake window and staring out into what was supposed to be a scenic view of the beach at sunset. It was beautiful, but Hestia was more worried about who her new official would be. Hopefully someone good.
Hestia was just beginning to calm down and actually admire the realism of the fake view in front of her when the door opened with a sudden rush and she was staring at her new "partner". And of course, just by looks alone, this was going to be a long training period.

Unlike Hesita, Kole dreaded the day he moved up from trainings to pushing paper and getting coffee. He always hated that his superior (as he so often reminded Kole that he was) didn't feel the need to train him, just send the boy for coffee and hope he doesn't die when they were in trouble.
Kole vowed that he wouldn't be like that if he ever one day got to be partners with someone fresh out of training. And low and behold, that day came. Angelique pulled Kole into her office bright and early that morning to hand Kole the file of his new, fresh-out-of-training partner, and was told to find them in the conference room.
Kole nodded and headed straight there, not wanting them to wait much longer. He reached the door way and was a bit taken aback to find a young woman sitting by the "window." Kole didn't have a problem with women working as Aurors. Hell, his boss was one, and he worked with some pretty respectable young woman through time. He just hadn't thought of the possibility that she could be...well, SHE.
He opened the file Angelique had handed him moments ago. Impressive marks, good training, top of class... "Hestia Jones?" He asked. She responded to the name and Kole smiled at her. "Um, you know that's not a real view, right?"

Hestia nodded when he said her name and felt the blush rise in her cheeks when he mentioned the window. "Yes sir. I know. I was just admiring how realistic it looked. Because, it looks real..." She trailed off. That sounded about as dumb as dumb could get. She noticed he was also carrying a file (hers she assumed) and wondered what they said. Hopefully, they didn't mention any accidents due to her clumsiness.
"So...sir," Hestia wasn't exactly sure how to address him, "when do we get started?"

Sir? that was strange. He was still young. Sir was like what he'd call hut uncle, if he had one, or his dad or a professor. "Kole is fine Kid," He said, raising a hand.
"We get started now," Kole said. He turned and began to walk down the hallway, waving a hand to gesture that Hestia followed him. He walked to the lifts, waving to a person or two that he knew. Once inside the elevators, he pressed the button for the bottom floor, and they both made their way downstairs.
He smiled sort of awkwardly at Hestia before leaning back against the wall of the elevator. It was one of those rare times at the ministry that no one else was in the lift. "They make us do this on the bottom floor so we disturbe less workers," Kole said. "Course, I think the owls that fly all over, delivering messages and such, are way more of a problem."

"Kole. Got it." Hestia followed him through the corridors, slightly disturbed by the lack of people and noise in this part of the ministry. This feeling only grew stronger when they stepped into the lifts only to find that they were the only two people in here. She was finding it hard to relax, mostly because of the emptiness, but part of her didn't want to screw up in front of her superior.
"Flying memos..." Hestia smiled and laughed a little. "A bunch of us in training had this theory that, secretly, as part of our training, we were supposed to be able to dodge them. All of them. That was what they were going to base our careers as aurors off of. If we could dodge a memo." She winced. "I was hit by at least 3 a day."

Her story made Kole laugh. "Yea, those darn things run into me all of the time," as if to prove his point, a memo flew into the eleator and smacked into the side of Kole's head. He swatted at t and it flew out on the next stop, which just happened to be theirs.
"Come on," Kole lead the way. They were down toward the bottom floors of the Ministry. Basement level basically, consisting of storage mostly, and a couple of training rooms for Aurors and MLE to work in.
"This is our stop," Kole opened the door for Hestia and led her into the room. "I just want to see what you can do, alright?"

Hestia smiled a little when a memo came zooming around the corner and whacked her new partner square in the head. She covered her mouth so he wouldn't see her trying not to laugh and was relived when he showed her the way to where they were to start training.
When they stopped in a room that was obviously quite underground, she suddenly got nervous. It was one thing to train with all the other wannabe aurors. It was another to do it in front of someone that had already done this and was actually living the life of one. Luckily she'd worn clothes she could move around in.
"Sure thing." She tried to smile like she was confident, but she knew it came out as more of a wince. "What're we going to try first?" She tried not to emphasize try to much, but she didn't want him to kill her the first go round.

The room they entered was a big, circular stone room. There was a viewing room on the farthest wall that was magically proofed to protect whoever was inside.
Kole hated this room when he was in training. His mentor had him here everyday, driving him nuts with training, making it nearly impossible to pass.
Kole wasn't nearly that mean.
"Well I'm going in there," Kole said, pointing to the viewing room. Inside there were panels and buttons to push and control how the situation in the room would go. "and you," he grinned at her, "should have your wand at the ready." Then he retreated to the training room and closed the door.
((OOC: I figured now I'd leave you to be creative and have Hestia show Kole her stuff ;] ))

Hestia watched him walk into a room towards the back of the big basement they were in. She suddenly felt completely numb. There was no way she would be able to move her limbs. She barely managed to turn her head back towards the training area before something happened in the room. She now appeared to be in a forest. It's probably just the Forbidden Forest. The thought comforted her for a little bit, mainly because her and her friends were there so much. She definitely knew her way around it. But she didn't have much time to get comfortable before something went zooming by her head and crashed into one of the make shift trees. Her head snapped in the direction it came from and she saw dark figures rushing towards her. So she did the first thing an auror trainee did. She ran in the opposite direction trying to remind herself that this was just a test run and the wouldn't possibly try to kill her....would they? It didn't help. So she turned and blasted a couple of spells backwards. She managed to knock two of the five shadows away but the other three were still chasing her and they were gaining. She kept running. She didn't understand how she hadn't hit one of the walls yet, but she figured that it was the magic helping her from face planting it in one of the walls.
Hestia was still running when the room changed again. Now it was completely dark. The dark wasn't Hestia's favorite. She actually hated it really. Especially since she had no idea where she was or what she was doing. While she was distracted, too busy thinking about how this situation couldn't be any worse, she was struck in the back. Hard. She blacked out.

"sh*t," Kole swore to himself as he shut off the room and hurried out to Hestia's side. "C'mon Kid," he shook her shoulder gently. "Wake up, you're alright."
He had to say, even running away during the first simulation was way better than what he had done his first time, which was curl up in a ball on the ground and hide behind a shaky shielding charm. Not that he was going to tell her that...

Hestia's vision swam and she saw small dots of light dance in front of her. A few seconds of rapid blinking finally made the dots go away and her vision go back to normal. She was surprised to find she was shaking. Being in complete darkness hit to close to home as far as fears go and she did not want to do it again.
"I'm fine." She said, but her voice gave her away. She was seriously unnerved by that simulation. She a took a deep breath and sat up, wincing. Whatever had hit her definitely left a bruise. No doubt a big one. She willed herself to relax and calmed down most of her quaking.
"Well...that was embarrassing. How many get knocked out five seconds in?" She let out a breathy laugh and looked down at her hands. If today proved anything, it was that she ws definitely not cut out to be an Auror.

He saw how discouraged she looked and frowned. That wasn't entirely his intention, and he felt a little guilty for it. "You'd be surprised," he said. "Come on, up now, lets try again, I'll even stick in here with you." He helped her up to her feet, watching her to makes sure they didnt need a trip to St. Mungo's.
"One more time alright? When you're ready."

Hestia wanted to groan, but she sucked up what doubt she had and with his help, stood up. Her vision swam slightly causing her to sway. She let out a shaky laugh. "Whatever those things were, they pack a punch." She rubbed her eyes, then the spot on her head wincing at the tenderness. That'll have to be iced before she went to bed tonight.
Fear made her noticeably tense up. "No time like the present I guess..." She said without much gusto. But nonetheless, she rolled her shoulders trying to loosen them up (she was still way to tense) and raised her wand. She gave him a curt nod and muttered, "Ready."

He reached out to steady her and when she was standing straight, he pulled out his wand. "Wand at the ready?" He checked. He saw her roll her shoulders. "Relax. If you're tense, you won't be able to focus as much."
He took a deep breath and pointed his wand at the control room. The room transformed to the forest again and instinctively, he stood with his back to Hestia's back, to maximise vision. Something jumped out behind on of the trees and Kole sent a stunning spell at it. When the spell hit it, it glowed red and collapsed to the ground. "Your turn Kid," Kole said.

Hestia jumped when she felt him back into her, but she quickly realized his tactics and decided that this would at least keep her from getting another whack to the back of the head. She relaxed a little when she saw him smoothly send a spell shooting towards whatever jumped from behind the tree without batting so much as an eyelash. It was comforting to her that at least he seemed to know what he was doing.
Hestia didn't have much time to envy his calmness before there was a loud crack and one of the trees split down the middle revealing something. At least, it was something. It didn't have any defining features, no real shape. It was just there. Terrifying and harmless all at the same time. She sent a spell flying its way and watched it smolder to the ground. She didn't have time to admire her quick reflexes before two more jumped out from two different places and came whizzing at them both.

"Nice one!" he said to her, trying to encourage her enough that he could see her full potential and not just her being nervous and second guessing. A big part of being in the field as an Auror involved reacting rather than reasoning. There wasn't a lot of time to think things through.
"Protego!" he motioned his wand around his and her head, creating a shield spell that circled around them. The things that jumped at them bounced off the shield, but they didn't dissolve, they only sat there, trying to break through Kole's shield.

Hestia instinctively winced when she thought she would feel impact, but nothing ever came. She heard Kole yell "Protego" and she watched silently and nervously as the black shapeless figures tried to claw their way through the shield. "How long will that hold before they get through?" Spitting out the question in a rush, her love of life and wanting to keep it over-riding her brain telling her that she should just quit now and tell Kole that she's done.
Hestia quickly scanned over her shoulder (having turned around to watch the figures at Kole's shield) just in time to shout "Confringo" at a creature slithering towards their feet. She watched it explode and she quickly cast her own Protego charm.
"They have to have a weakness." She muttered more to herself than for Kole. Hestia, usually unhappy with her ability to work well under pressure (horrible trait for homework), never appreciated this trait more. Scanning the forest one more time before turning back to Kole, she asked him, "Do you think it's light? Their weakness I mean. There isn't a trace of light or anything here."

Kole shot another spell at an incoming figure and it was effective, but it broke his shield. With not enough time to put up another shield, and another figure coming right at them, Kole instinctively wrapped his arm around Hestia and dove behind a boulder, shooting a jynx over his shoulder.
At her question, he seemed genuinely surprised, and nodded. "Worth a shot right? I'll shoot a jynx to fight them off, you cast some light on the situation?" He nodded at her and then, at the count of three, looked over the rock and blasted back three figures, waiting for Hestia's light.

Hestia, momentarily shocked by Kole's arm around here, shook herself and refrained from snorting at his pun, whether it was intended or not. Making sure her wand was at the ready, she squatted behind the rock and waited for her cue.
She didn't have to wait long, because as Kole shot three figures down, almost triple that started to form across the small clearing that they had created from all the spells. For a minute fear paralyzed her. Darkness, her biggest fear, was literally manifesting itself a little more than 20 feet from her. She shook herself one last time. She had to mentally scold herself. This was training after all. What was she going to do out in the real world? Taking one last deep breath, she jumped to her feet and yelled, "Lumos Maximus!"
Before she could blink, she was standing back in the circular stone room. No forest, no dark figures. It was like it had never happened. They were even still facing the viewing room like they hadn't moved at all. She turned to Kole and gave him the "Did I do something wrong?" look.

"Not bad," Kole said, brushing off his pants, even though they weren't dirty. "The room resets once you've defeated it. They get more difficult with time too, but I started you off in medium difficulty." He looked up at her and she looked like a deer in the headlights. He smiled and clapped her shoulder, thinking that was a friendly move right?
"You did good kid." he said. "The last trainee in here got "killed" like five times in a row before figuring the light thing out." Okay, so that guy was him, but Kole didn't have to tell her that.
