(I have decided that, from now on, all of Abbey's threads will be named after Beatles songs.)
It was the first day in more than a week that it wasn't gray, cloudy, and rainy. But after living in London for a few years, Abbey had come to expect that sort of weather. Part of that meant enjoying the rare sunny day when it happened to come along. And if it came along on a Sunday, so much the better.
She was out early, and after picking up a chocolate croissant and a cup of coffee, Abbey began to just walk. For reasons she could never quite understand, she felt more at home here, among the muggles, than she ever had back at Hogwarts. So many people at Hogwarts were stuck-up or pretentious, and out here, the muggles seemed so much more innocent in comparison. Of course, she was sure that they had their own vices and troubles, but she liked to believe that they did not. That it was somehow simpler for them. But then, they probably would have thought the same thing about her life if they knew about it.
She stopped in front of a shop window that contained a display of wedding gowns. She could never help the urge to stop and look at wedding dresses, even though any hope of a wedding was far in the future for her. But what girl didn't dream about her wedding? It was the one day in a woman's life when she could dress up in a beautiful gown and be the center of attention. If only she could find a guy...
Abbey hardly ever dated. She'd been on a few dates back in school, but it was never anything serious. And after school, she had become kind of a recluse. The only times she ever went out were either by herself or with her sisters. Oh, she'd seen guys that she liked, that she would have gone out with if they had asked, but she had never been bold enough to ask one out herself. So she was just always waiting for a guy to make the first move... and they just never had.
She sighed sadly, touching her fingers to the glass. She could remember Janis's wedding. Dressed all in white, her long dark hair piled up in a mass of cascading curls and adorned with a lacy veil, Janis had looked like the perfect fairy tale bride. Was it so much to ask that Abbey have that chance?
Of course, Abbey knew that just getting married wasn't the point. She had to fall in love first. And that was what she wanted most of all: A guy who would look at her the way Galen looked at Janis--like she was the moon and stars and rainbows and flowers all wrapped up into one. She longed for that feeling of urgency, where every touch would make her shiver inside, and she was burning to be close to someone. She knew that existed, because Janis had that with Galen. But maybe it was something reserved for only certain people. Maybe Abbey would never know that feeling.
She didn't even realize that she was tearing up until she blinked and the world seemed to swim before her. She couldn't look at the wedding dress any longer, and she turned to walk away quickly, not watching where she was going.
