A chill ran down Kieran's spine at the mention of the Dark Mark--the mark that had been in the sky over Hogsmeade after the attack. He hadn't been there, but he couldn't stop imagining the sight of that glowing green skull hovering over the spot where his father lay dead from the killing curse, or where his sister lay burned and bloodied, or where Ivy lay, crushed under a heavy metal beam. What if the same person made both marks? What if the same person who had done those things to his family now had Dani?
Abruptly, he got up and walked over to the bar. He grabbed an empty glass, not even checking to see if it was clean before he filled it with firewhiskey and began to drink. He had never had a drink in front of his mother, except for wine at Christmas, but he didn't even care right now. While his mother still clung to hope, Kieran had long since forgotten how to hope.
"Please tell me she's going to be OK. Make me believe it."

Pavel narrowed his eyes at Danica. Why did he and Aurelia have to have a child? They cause so much trouble. He took the edge of the tape and, smiling sinisterly, ripped it off her mouth so forcefully, the chair almost knocked over. He could hear the pain it caused her and he smiled to himself. "No little magic tricks can save you now," Pavel said. "All you have to hope for is your retched mother, who will put the pieced together and come and save you anytime now, and when she does..." well, he wasn't about to reveal the whole plan to the eleven year old child. So he simply smirked again and dropped the piece of tape to the floor. Then he moved to the desk on the other side of the room where a box of pizza laid from earlier that day. He ate it cold, annoyed that he didn't have a way to heat it up, but was glad to satisfy his hunger. Dani, having no other way to defend herself or stop anything he might do, screamed. She didn't mean to, but she was 11 and she was scared and the force of the tape being ripped from her mouth had hurt quite a lot. It brought tears to her big, brown eyes, and she turned them to Pavel when the incident was over. She regarded him quietly, sniffling once though she tried very hard not to cry in front of him. While he ate, her eyes narrowed, and she piped up with, "I have to go to the bathroom."

Rita's eyes followed Kieran as he poured himself a drink. She should have been worried, but the only thing she could think was that she sort of wished he poured on for her, too.
She sent the owl to Kieran hoping he would come and make her feel better. But she realized now that a mother's job was to be strong for her children, to make them feel better. Right now, that included Kieran, Dani, and even Aurelia. And Rita w as nothing if not made of steel, so she took a deep breath and nodded, waiting for Kieran's attention again.
"Henri and Aurelia are outside looking for her right now. I'm certain that someone grabbed her in all the commotion to get her to safety. She'll be coming back now. Any second."

Aurelia was a wreck at this point. Nothing Henri could say made her feel any better. The only thing that would make her feel better was having Dani back in her arms. How was she supposed to think of anything else? A new voice distracted her and she turned to look at the MLE officer through teary eyes. Any other time she would have noticed that he had a kind face, with warm and compassionate eyes. But right now all that mattered was his words. "Please... it's my d-daughter. Danica. She... she came to see me and now she's gone... she left her cloak and her wand behind... I think s-someone t-took her..." She was still clutching Dani's cloak, and the wand was still on the ground in front of them. "Okay," Sean said, his voice calm and as soothing as he could make it. He glanced at Henri... there were certain things he needed to ask, a process to be followed, just about how they'd swept the area, who they'd spoken with, people who would want to take a little girl. But he was going to assume that Henri had already gone through most of this. Being an Auror, he would have had similar training as Sean, and wouldn't have looked anything over. And he already ruled out the possibility that the little girl was still in the area. If she was, he rather imagined Henri would have found her. He bent down, using Henri and Aurelia's bodies to block him from view as he pulled out his wand and waved it over Dani's. "Hers are the only fingerprints visible. She must have dropped it." Test number two... really, a test only he could do, and he picked up the wand, hiding the look in his eyes. Dani had not dropped the wand on purpose. She tried to use it, and it had been knocked from her hand. He didn't know if this would make them feel better or not. Getting to his feet, he handed the wand to Aurelia. "Please, let's go inside, and I'd like to ask a couple of questions. We'll find her, ma'am... I just need a place to start."

Kieran down about half of the glass, his hand shaking the whole time. He looked at his mother and the vague thought occurred to him to ask her if she wanted a drink, too, but somehow he couldn't form the words. Right now, he felt raw, like an open wound. It was as if he was reliving that day, when he lost nearly everything. If Danica was not OK, Kieran wasn't sure he'd be able to pull himself back up again. He might just let himself drown in the bottom of a bottle. He was just so tired of hurting.
Slowly, he nodded, trying desperately to believe his mother's words. He didn't, not for a second. He had not always been such a pessimist, but he had lost so much already that all he could see was negative. He pictured Dani's sweet smile and her big brown eyes and the way she seemed to look at him as if he held all the answers, and he just felt his heart breaking.
"I hope you're right," he whispered.

But Aurelia did not want to go back inside. She did not want to set foot back in that bar without her baby. She could be anywhere; she could be right around the corner, she could be hiding under a dumpster, or she could be halfway across the country. Aurelia didn't know and she was not moving until they had some idea.
"No," she said, shaking her head. "No... we're wasting time talking. We need to find her. Please... I just want my little girl back..."

Henri gave a glance to Sean. He knew that Aurelia was going to be hard about this. She was Dani's mother after all, and she had every right in the world to want to find her daughter.
"Sean needs a little information so we will have some kind of idea where to start," he said moving closer to Aurelia. Henri spoke in a kind tone. He was torn between wanting to tear the town apart to find Danica and doing things like he was supposed to. Finding the little girl was extremely important to him. "We can just get an idea here, we don't have to go inside. The sooner we have a small amount of information, the quicker we can start the search."

Sean sighed, though he kept it inaudible. He understood the woman's anxiety. Of course he did, he couldn't imagine what it would feel like to know that your child was missing. But he had been on too many of these calls to know where he needed to start, the steps he needed to take.
Compromising with Henri, he stayed put and didn't force them inside, even though there wouldn't be muggles wondering around inside.
"Okay. Ma'am... is there anyone who would want to take your daughter?" That would make it easier to find her than if it had been a random kidnapping. He looked to Henri. "Did anyone actually see her her?"

He couldn’t help it that he liked the feeling of causing her that pain. She deserved it, every bit of it. How DARE she follow her mother, go to a school with all those freaks, become one herself. Pavel took Danica’s being a witch personally, as if she had become one to spite him. He reached into his bag and pulled out a bottle of bourbon, pouring himself some in a little Styrofoam cup on the desk. “So?” he said to her, raising an eyebrow but not even looking her way. He took a sip of his drink and smiled, satisfied. He waited ‘till he poured himself another drink before looking over at Danica. Realizing that, if he didn’t let the little girl use the bathroom, he’d have a mess to deal with, he groaned and stood up, finishing off his drink before walking to Danica and untieing her from the chair. “Fine, but we’ll make it quick,” he said, annoyed that this was beginning to be more trouble than it was worth.

But if he hadn't been there, she would be much closer to falling apart. "The only person I can think of is my husband," Aurelia said, trying to focus her attention on Sean. "But it's impossible. I haven't seen him for 8 years, since I ran away with my daughter. And he's a muggle. He c-couldn't have gotten inside on his own... But if he didn't do it... I don't know who would have...."

She didn't remember much about him, she just remembered that night that she tried to intervene, to save her mother. And of course, the 'heights' incident. And that was it- but it was enough to burn the memory of his face into her mind. It was enough to make her terrified now. She was about to threaten to either pee where she was, or keep screaming really loudly, when he seemed to get the idea anyway, and stood up to let her loose. She got to her feet, and hesitated for just a second. She could go along with him quietly, but when had she ever listened to anyone that she didn't think was right? Her mother would come save her and she knew that- but somehow, she had to help a little, too. She took a breath, her heart starting to race, and she took off, running away from him as fast as her short legs could carry her.

"Okay," Sean said, mulling this over in his head. He wished he could have seen more about what happened. "Does he know anyone in the magical world? Anyone who could have helped him get here?"
He wanted to go inside, away from the muggles that were tossing glances their way. At least he looked like a muggle police officer- that helped. Still, any unwanted attention was unfortunate.
"If you could describe him for me, we'll keep a watch for him, in case he is involved. I promise we'll find your daughter... I just need a little more information from you and then we'll start the search."

Describe him? Aurelia was lucky she could string three words together, let alone describe the man she hadn't seen in more than 8 years. The only things keeping her even remotely sane at that moment were Henri's arm around her and the calm, even tone in Sean's voice.
She took a few calming breaths, then fumbled in her pocket to pull out her small purse. Inside it was a picture of her and Dani together, and she took it out and held it out to Sean with shaking hands. "Here's a picture of Dani," she said. "It was taken a few months ago... the day she got her Hogwarts letter."
Then she tried very hard to picture Pavel in her mind so that she could describe him. It had been so long since she'd seen him... "Um... he has dark hair... it's slightly curly... Cold brown eyes, a long, straight nose, angular jaw... I... I don't know what else to say..."
She turned to Henri and flung herself back into his arms.

Maybe that was a poor way to ask for what the guy looked like. He should have asked if they could use a penseive or something to that effect.
But he knew he could still get an image of the guy. He hated this, sometimes.
When she flung herself into Henri's arms, he put a hand on her back under the guise of consoling her.
And he stepped back almost instantly as her fears and her memories struck him like a tidal wave.
Giving himself a second, he turned to Henri. "You should take her home," he said softly. "I'll be in touch."

She took a breath, her heart starting to race, and she took off, running away from him as fast as her short legs could carry her. Pavel groaned. He considered just letting her run, it wasn't like she'd get anywhere. There wasn't civilization around for miles. The Warehouse they were locked up was abandoned, all of them were. After a while, he figured that Dani was stubborn enough that she would just keep running until she passed out, and Pavel just didn't feel like going to find her when she did. He took off after her. With much longer legs and an athlete's stanama, He reached her just as she made it outside and leaped at her. Pavel wrestled Dani to the ground and held her tight. "Do you see this?" he pulled her hair back so that she could see the vast emptiness around them. There's no one for miles and miles. Even if I let you run," he stood up and dragged her along with him back inside the warehouse. "You'd probably die before you found another living being." He slammed the door behind him and walked inside, passing the office. Nearby there was a storage locker, dark and just big enough to fit an 11 year old girl. He opened it and threw her inside, slamming the door and lifting up a two by four to place inside the handles. There, now she can't get away. He marched back up the stairs and slammed the door to the office, sitting in the chair and taking a swig from the bottle of Bourbon. All this was too much work for Pavel. He drank more and more until the bottle was half gone and slipped onto the floor. He'd let the damn girl out for a while tomorrow, was the last thought he had before he passed out on the floor of the office.

Dani was running as fast as she could. And for a moment, when she didn't hear him following after her, she thought that just maybe she would be able to get away. That maybe she would get away and be able to either get help or find somewhere to hide until Aurelia could find her.
But that relief, that hope, was short lived, and Pavel was caught up to her at an alarmingly fast rate. She screamed when his arms went around her, flailing as much as she could. She was trying to push away from him him with her arms, kicking with her legs. You had to admire the fight in the little girl.
And then she was on the ground, pinned under him. She cursed the fact that she was smaller than most girls her age, and that her wand was long gone.
The second the door was closed on her, she was engulfed in total darkness, and she could feel the walls all around her. She threw herself into the door, hitting it and screaming until her throat was raw. It was stuffy and hot, and all of her energy probably wasn't helping. Finally, exhausted, she collapsed and just cried until she fell into a fitful sleep sometime later.

Deep down, Aurelia knew she should go home. She was exhausted, deep down into her bones, and she wasn’t going to do Dani any good at all like that. But how could anyone expect her to rest when her baby was missing?
“No,” she protested thickly. It was a feeble protest at best, but she honestly didn’t have much left. She was working toward a breakdown. “No, I can’t go home… Not without my baby. Please don’t make me… I can’t leave her.”

Sean felt the woman's pain. She didn't look much older than he was, and he couldn't even imagine having a child and losing her, or not knowing where she was or what had happened.
"Ma'am," Sean said gently, "Go home. Get some sleep, and we will find her. You're not leaving her... she's not here right now, and I think you know that. But I promise we will be in contact, and we'll have her back to you, soon."
He already knew they could get the Auror Department involved if they needed to. As much as she seemed unable to give a reasonable connection, a girl had disappeared when the Dark Mark appeared. That was enough for Sean.

Aurelia was starting to cry again. How was she supposed to go home? She knew that she should leave the search to the professionals, but this was her daughter. She wanted to be able to be the first face Dani saw when they found her. And she certainly couldn't get any rest while her daughter was missing, scared, and probably hurt.
"Please find her," she choked out at last. "And tell her that I love her."
She turned to Henri. "We--we should tell Rita..."

Henri looked to Sean and gave him a grateful look. "Merci," he said before looking to Aurelia again. He was going to stay however long he needed to with Aurelia. Part of him knew that if he left her she would go looking for Dani herself and Henri didn't want Aurelia to just disappear too.
"We can go tell Rita, however, I'm taking you home right after. Okay?" With the way that Aurelia had spoken of Rita, and the way the woman reacted about Dani, Henri knew that it was best if they let her know what was happening.
He looked back to Sean. "Let me know as soon as you find something," Henri said. He was going to have to be updated on any news of finding Dani. It was going to drive him crazy until she was found, and he knew that Aurelia would need to know something.
