"Yes, not asking for permission does count," he said. "You don't ever have to ask for permission from anyone Savannah, not anymore." Elliot felt even more sorrow for his sister. He only hoped that something would click in her head and she would stop acting like a proper lady. He wasn't sure what that would be, but he hoped she would.
It was odd. Most brothers probably wanted their sisters to be more conservative while Elliot was asking his sister to be more out there. Of course Savannah's situation wasn't extremely common. Elliot hadn't really seen any girls that acted extremely prim and proper and asked for permission to leave the table.

Savannah looked at him for a long moment. Her wounded feelings were now dissolving into anger. She wasn’t angry at Elliot particularly… she was angry about everything. She was angry that she had a horrible father, a weak mother, and two brothers who never bothered to stand up for her. She was angry that everyone always told her what to do, and she had always let them. Even now, Elliot was telling her to do what she wanted, but he was still telling her what to do. How was she supposed to know what she wanted? She had gone 16 years doing whatever anyone else wanted her to do, and she had suppressed everything inside of her that contradicted that. As a result, she had no idea what she wanted anymore.
Finally, she nodded slowly. “OK, then,” she said, finally making up her mind. If he wanted a rebellion from her, he was going to get it.
So without another word, she turned and walked briskly out of the room.

He was unsure of the outcome of him finally talking to her. Elliot only hoped that it would turn out alright. He didn't know what to do or what to really say and he hoped that he didn't hurt her feelings badly. Maybe Savannah would have changed if he hadn't said anything, maybe she would have had enough.
At Savannah's leave, Elliot nodded. "Good night Savannah," he said as she left the room. He laid back on his bed. He wasn't sure how things were going to be between them. The closeness was what Elliot desired, but he only wondered if this whole thing was going to push them apart.
