Steven put a hand to his heart in mock pain at Linette's comment.
"See, Callie knows how to treat an old man. Really, you're honesty hurts a little, Linette." The truth was, he could cook. He wasn't a chef by any means, but he'd been forced to learn to cook what the girls liked throughout their lives, and the phases changing were dramatic. But he had already ordered pizza for them, from a little italian place on the other side of their district.
He shrugged and sat down at the table with his girls, squeezing in between Bobby and Linny. "Just working, Cal. There was a whole complex on fire a couple days ago. I saved a cat from the fourth floor."

Callie smiled with pride at her father. Despite her well-known reputation for hating all men, the truth was, in Callie's eyes no man could measure up to her father. He was a real man, what all men should aspire to be like. He was just as much at home in the kitchen or having a tea party with a little girl as he was working at the fire department with the guys. And he saved lives... even those of cats and other animals.
"That's amazing," she said, smiling. "Most people wouldn't even pay attention to the cat. But you're a real life hero."

Bobby rolled her eyes. "Come on, Callie. It's his job to save the cats. I bet he had an old lady hitting him with her purse or something until he went back in."
She leaned into her father, though, and gave him a smile reserved just for him. "Not that I don't think you're a hero, because you are. So are the other guys." The girls knew the other firefighters in his ladder like family. They spent a few Christmases and birthdays at the station, and they were like family.
The doorbell rang, and Bobby stood up. "I bet that's our pizza. I'll get it."

"Yea Daddy, we're very proud," Linette said honestly. No matter who she was with or what she thought of gys, her father was her superhero, and alwas will be.
She watched Bobby go get the pizza and the second she was out of ear shot, she leaned toward Callie. "So, who do you think she was with?" Linette whispered toher sister, a twinkle of the little gossip-princess in her eye.

Callie shrugged. "I don't know," she answered honestly. "It really could have been anybody. But I intend to find out later."
Although it really wasn't unusual for Bobby to be delayed by a friend, something about the evasive way she said it set off alarm bells in Callie's head. It was definitely a boy; that much was certain. Most of Bobby's friends were boys. And she had a lot of friends. In fact, both Bobby and Linette were popular in their own ways. Callie, however, was significantly less popular, at least in terms of people who actually wanted to be her friends. She didn't mind it, but because of that, she had a little too much time to pay attention to her sisters' friends.
"I kind of hope it's that Neil kid," Callie said. "I don't mind him so much."

"What? Who's Neil?"
He hated being so out of the loop with his girls, and while he knew that Linette really liked boys, he was worried now that Bobby seemed to be attracting attention as well. Yes, she's always had friends that were boys, but they all remained nameless to him. Next, Callie would find a boy she could tolerate, and then where would he be?
"You girls are going to be the death of me. Would Bobby allow me to lock her up until she's 40?"

Callie let out a laugh. “Don’t panic, Dad. If I say he’s not so bad, you don’t have to worry. He’s quiet and shy, and I don’t think Bobby even realizes that he likes her. But I was watching him when he was with her at the ball. If he ever gets up the nerve to tell her, I have a feeling he’ll treat her like a queen.”
In Callie’s opinion, that was what Bobby deserved. She was the best of the three of them, and she deserved everything good.
“Even I can admit that not all boys are bad. Just most of them.”

"No, they'll all bad," Steven said, but he gave Callie a smile to show her that he was joking. All three of his daughters deserved to be treated like queens and nothing less... and there was a guy out there for each of them. But he was quick to remind them, too, that they were still very young and they didn't have to find that boy before they graduated.
"Anyway, can we stop talking about boys? What's new at school? How are your classes going?" As he asked this, Bobby came back in with their pizza.

Unaware that her sisters had been speculating about her, Bobby returned. "Oh my God, Dad. I adore you. This all smells amazing."
Bobby had four boxes in her arms: three pizzas and one box of the cheesy breadsticks that she liked so much. She could almost forgo the pizza just for those breadsticks.
She set them all on the counter and brought down four plates. "Come on, girls. Food's on."

"Ah ha! I knew it... and Bobby and Linny say I'm too hostile about boys." She shot a look at Linette, only because Bobby wasn't in the room yet.
But when Bobby came in with the pizza, the topic was forgotten. Callie broke into a smile. "Those do smell good," she said, grabbing one of the boxes from Bobby. You went to DeAngelo's, didn't you? You know they're my favorite."
She opened the box and her face lit up. "All right... white pizza with tomatoes and spinach! My favorite." She immediately pulled out a slice and took a bite, not bothering with a plate.

Linette mimed zipping her lips to her father when Bobby came in, knowing that her youngest sister wouldn't like too much that she and Callie were talking about her. "Yum! Smells great," she said, grabbing another box. Linetter was a simple, cheese only, kind of girl. Unlike Callie though, she went to the specific drawer and grabbed a stack of plates and some napkins. She handed one to everyone and put one infront of Callie, who was already eating.
"Thanks Daddy," Linette smiled, grabbing her own piece of pizza.

Bobby rolled her eyes at Callie. "Who'd you learn your manners from?" she teased, taking a plate from Linette and putting a couple pieces of pepperoni on it, handing it to her father and getting the same for herself. She took after him that way, having much the same taste in food.
They knew, too, that they're mother's pizza of choice was cheese only, which of course left Callie as the sister who was making the statement. None of this was ever said, of course.
She sat down next to her dad. "Thanks, Dad. You always know how to treat us when we come home."

Callie rolled her eyes. "Whatever. I knew you guys would get me one," she replied.
Bobby had it right if she thought that Callie was trying to make a statement. Practically everything Callie did was to make a statement and assert her individuality. That was one of the most important things for Callie. AS much as she loved her sisters and was proud to be one of the triplets, she also needed to be seen as a separate person, not just as part of a unit.
"So, what's the news on the carnival this year, Dad? They are having one, right?"

Steven almost laughed watching his girls. How he had managed for 17 years and not gone insane, he really didn't know. But he also loved them with everything he had, and that made it go a long way for his sanity.
"We are having a carnival this year... we haven't had as many people express interest, though. I guess all the kids we used to do it for have grown up." His own excluded, because they humored him every year. "It's going to be a week later, too, but still on the weekend, so I hope you girls will still come home from school?"

(I could have sworn I replied to this)
Callie smiled at her father. She could tell that, even though he was trying to give them an out, he still really wanted them to come to the carnival. They had very fond memories of the carnival growing up, the three girls walking around holding their father's hands. Usually it had been Bobby on one side, Linny on the other, and Callie holding on to one of the other girls, if she wasn't on one of her independent streaks and insisting on walking by herself. Callie still sometimes missed those days, when it had just been the four of them, before magic and school and boys and different friends came between them.
Callie didn't think of it as humoring him so much as trying to return to that kind of innocence. Now, instead of running around and playing all the games and riding all the rides, she usually helped out, so she could do her part to make things as much fun for the younger kids as they had always been when she was a kid. And the last few years, Linny had brought a date, and Bobby had brought some of her friends as well. Only Callie came alone, and usually spent the time with their father. But this year.... well, an idea had sparked in her mind. There was someone she wanted to ask to come with her.... but she wasn't about to mention that to anyone just yet.
"Don't be silly, Daddy, you know we wouldn't miss it for the world. Could you put my name down for the face painting booth again?"
