He was going to be late. It was the third time he checked his pocket watch for the time, and sighed. It couldn't be helped. He had canceled the last family dinner because of work, and promised he'd be to the next one.
Maverick often put things aside for work without a second thought, his family was the only thing that deserved true regard in the matter and even then sometimes when he was in the middle of a case he had to cancel. It wasn't that he loved work more than his family, but rather the drive behind each case was obsessive. In his mind, it was only five more minutes and he could get something done...ten more minutes and he could get something else done.
But there was no hope for it now, he was going to be late.
It was a good thing however that he was already dressed nicely, due to court procedure. Finally he made the last of his rounds, said goodbye and apparated.
"Knock knock." he said tapping on the wall and walking inside. He loosened his tie and kissed the top of Trina's head since she was closest, and of course still the baby. If anybody spoiled the family, and especially Trina it was Maverick who felt that he could sometimes make up for the fact that he wasn't around with expensive gifts.
"Ma in the kitchen?" he asked absently.

Trina, of course, ate up the attention. Being the baby, she knew the others tended to spoil her and she didn't exactly discourage such behavior. She liked to tease them and say that their parents had saved the best for last.
"Ricky!" she squealed happily when he came in. It was the nickname she had always used for him, especially since Maverick seemed like such a hard word to say when she was little. "That makes everyone... except Rosie. Mum is in the kitchen, Daddy's sneaking a cigar in his study. What's going on with you?"

She was the only one to call him Ricky, his other siblings knew he didn't particularly like the nickname, except when she called him that and then only because she was the baby and he spoiled her in all things.
He smiled, " Well then I guess I made it in time." he said with a small sigh of relief. He frowned when he heard that Rosie was absent but it didn't come as much of a surprise.
He smiled at all of his present siblings finally having that family feeling wash over him, finally relaxing, before turning to Trina, " Nothing much...new case, putting the bad guys behind bars, and making tons of money to buy my girls whatever they want." he teased.

Trina's face lit up. Though she was 18 and hardly a child, she was still the "baby" of the family and she worked it to her advantage. She could look like a 6 year old girl at Christmas when she wanted to.
"And did you bring me anything?" she asked, fluttering her eyes sweetly. She loved getting gifts and was so used to being spoiled by her older siblings that she really almost expected something every time she saw them.

Even though Darryl was as guilty as anyone else of spoiling Trina, he still didn't encourage that sort of behavior from her. He may have been the family clown, but he also worried deeply for each of his siblings and could be kind of a killjoy at times, especially for the two youngest girls.
"Trina, you know we can't bring you gifts every time. Maybe you shoudl seriously start thinking about what you want to do with your life."

Trina rolled her eyes dramatically. "Oh, come on, Dar. I'm only 18, why do I have to start thinking about that already. I'm young and I just want to live a little before I become an old and decripity working drudge."
The truth was, however, Trina thought often about what she was going to do with her life. She didn't think she would be content with just having a job. Sitting in a soul-killing office somewhere or running around a mind-killing restaurant just didn't sound like any fun at all. But she wasn't sure just what exactly she was qualified to do. She really hadn't excelled in anything at school, and nothing seemed to grab her interest.
She didn't feel like telling any of this to Darryl--or anyone else--at that moment. She was with her family and she just wanted them to fuss over her and treat her like she was special.

"Oh, leave her be, Darryl," Baakir said, rolling his eyes before the argument could really get started. "Let's not do this tonight, all right?"
He worried for his siblings too, and often took it upon himself to take care of each of them. But Trina was in a stage in her life where she could do what she did, and she would eventually figure out what she needed to do.
"Come on, we're all here. Everyone that's going to be, anyway. Let's see what we can do to help in the kitchen."

Nailah had to side with Baakir on this one... she hated it when her siblings fought, and she really wasn't in the mood to be a mediator tonight. Besides, Trina still had time. Heck, half the time, Nailah wasn't even sure she was happy doing what she was doing.
"She's the baby, she's supposed to get spoiled. She went up to Darryl and put her arm around his shoulders, kissing him on the cheek. "I know," she said softly. "But give her time. She'll figure it out."

Darryl smiled lightly. "You're right. Sorry."
He left it at that. Really, when it came down to it, he was less worried about Trina than he was about Dezaraye. She was the party girl, and everyone knew it and just sort of swept it under the rug. He was pretty sure that their parents were completely in the dark about it, and he wasn't entirely sure that was a good thing. He glanced over at her, but said nothing.
"All right, I'll help. But if Ma's making a cake, I call dibs on licking the bowl."

"No fair, I want some," Dezaraye said. Course, she couldn't eat much of it. Cake plus dinner was not good math for Dezaraye's figure, and that wouldn't bode well for her lifestyle.
She stood up from her seat and kissed her oldest brothers on the cheek, since she hadn't properly greated them. She was quiet while they talked about Rosie, she didn't want to talk about her estranged sibling. In her opinion, if Rosie didn't want to be part of the family, Dez didn't want her around. Plain and simple.
"Yea Darryl, let her be," she said as she hugged Maverick. "Besides, everyone knows if MAverick is going to bring gifts, they're for me," she laughed, showing that she was only kidding, and winked at Trina.

He bought things for his family all the time, though quite often he knew they would have valued his company more, it often got in the way of work. He was still struggling to find that balance.
However he never bought things unnecessarily, everything he picked out for his family usually came from the heart. He would walk past a Jewelry store and suddenly see earrings for Dezaraye, a necklace for Trina, or a bracelet for Nailah or any other combination involving all of his siblings.
Still smiling at his family though he missed what they were arguing about he simply followed the group to their new location. Of course he had bought things and brought them there to give away...but he wasn't going to spoil them yet.

Trina ignored the whole exchange with Darryl. He was always trying to ruin her fun, but she knew he was just as likely to spoil her as much as anyone else. When the talk turned to helping in the kitchen, Trina rolled her eyes. Cooking was pretty much the least of her interests. Instead she turned to her big brothers. The two oldest were an endless source of fascination for her. They were so much older than she was that they had already finished school and moved out when she was a baby. So she didn't really know them as well as the others, who had always been around when she was growing up. For this reason, they both fascinated her and was almost desperate for their attention.
"Come on, Maverick," she began, looking up at him adoringly. "Tell me about all the exciting things going on in your life."

Even today, Dez was wearing a necklace the Mavrick had gotton her a while back. It was drop down and blue, one of Dez's favorite colors. She usually wore it while with her family, since it wasn't something she would normally wear to a club or a party.
"Trina, don't be nosey," Dezaraye said. Then she turned to Maverick. "But really, whats been going on?" she giggled.

Was it wrong of Rosalind that her reasons for coming to the family dinner this time were not so pleasant as everyone else's? While everyone else would be laughing and catching up with each other, Rosalind was coming simply so they would get off her back. If she missed too many of these god awful, boring dinners, they all starting hounding her, asking where she was, what she was up to. So she'd make a short appearance tonight. Short.
When she stepped through the door, it was already loud and all too happy.
"Well... I guess I'm the last one to arrive."

Darryl, for one, was happy to see her. He was getting something of a reputation for being the family worrier, but was it so wrong that he wanted everyone together and happy? Things had seemed so much simpler when they were all kids, even though when he was younger, Baakir and Maverick were already almost old enough to move out. But family was important, and with everything that was going on in the wizarding world, it was probably more important than ever that the family stick together. So every time Rosie was "too busy" to come to a family dinner, Darryl worried about her.
"Rosie!" he exclaimed, moving over to put his arms around her. "We were afraid you weren't going to make it again. Looks like Trina owes me ten galleons."

Oh, Merlin, the hugs and the excitement. Rosalind wanted to roll her eyes, but she held back, smiling at Darryl.
They may have all been happy and too naive for her tastes, but they were still family.
"Hello, Darryl," she said in a much more toned down greeting than he gave. She even hugged him, and moved on to the rest of the siblings. "You know I like to keep you all on your toes."

He had been too quiet just watching everyone. Truth was he could dance his way around in a courtroom before a jury (OOC: I don't know what it would be called in Rowling's world), but at home his family could still dance circles around him most of them talking over the other one and he loved every minute of it.
He gave a subtle smile when they inquired about his life, there wasn't much excitement at all really and if there was he certainly wasn't going to bring it home. Excitement in his life consisted of criminals and death threats.
When Rosie got there he was honestly surprised but glad none the less, "Rosalind you are more lovely every time I see you."

Dez smiled as her sister Rosalind walked into the room to join them, but she didn't rush to give her a hug like her brothers had. There was always somethign about Rosie that made Dezaraye feel uneasy, but she couldn't put her finger on it. Honestly, it was Dezaraye, she got along with everyone, that's why she was such a social butterfly and it made her lifestyle of clubs and parties easier.
But still, she didn't get along too great with Rosie, so she just sat back quietly as she was greated by her brothers and sisters.

Trina, meanwhile, was glad to see Rosie. After all, it meant that everyone was together, and how could that be a bad thing? That was what she always wanted. The older siblings were all so much older than she was that she didn't even remember a time when they all lived under the same roof. So anytime they were all together was special.
"Rosie!" she cried happily, momentarily forgetting her attempts to interrogate Maverick. "Mav's right... you look amazing. I love your earrings."

If anyone was surprised That Rosie had actually shown up, it was Nailah. She watched as the family, most of them, greeted her, and then moved in for a hug, locking eyes with the two oldest brothers. "Rosie, you really do look great. You're too skinny, though."
She released the girl and held her at arms' length for a minute. Then, she backed off, coming up next to Daryl. As Rosalind was saying hello, Nailah sighed. "I think something really dark is going on with her, Dar. She's just changed so much."
