Whatever confidence Elliot was feeling at the moment was the same kind of confidence he felt whenever he was around Cameron. He noticed that she gave a shiver, and Elliot wasn't sure how to respond to that except for look at his chair with his cheeks brightening a little.
Once she looked back, he put on his smile again before taking a seat. Elliot felt like he was starving and took a piece of bread, like he had before. As he picked up a piece of bread, the blush on Ingrid's cheeks was visible because of her pale skin. A smile wanted to appear on his face because he noticed her blush, but he took a bite of bread to hide his smile.
"Has your day been good so far, Ingrid?"

Because she didn't speak, most of the people who tried to talk to her as though she were either deaf or stupid. They would try to talk really loud or slow or use meaningless hand gestures, as though they thought she wouldn't understand. Ingrid had always hated that. But Elliot didn't do that. He talked to her as if she were just an ordinary girl. That was one of the things she liked most about him. He treated her just like anyone else.
She reached for a piece of bread as well, and as she was spreading some butter on it, she glanced over at him and nodded in answer to his question. So far her day was going pretty well. She had got an A on her essay in potions, the bird that was hit by the Whomping Willow was recovering nicely, and she was sitting with Elliot and having lunch. What could be better?
Then she pointed at him, asking him how his day was going.

"Nothing exciting," he said with a shrug. "It's been pretty much like every other day, except you changed the routine up a little." Elliot smiled before the rest of his piece of bread went into his mouth. Noticing that he pretty much stuffed his mouth full, he gave her a sheepish look before swallowing.
"I have an essay coming up that I need to work on, so I suppose I'll do that later." Of course, he didn't really want to do his essay, but it would bug him to death if he didn't do it. Maybe he could get it done early and then he wouldn't have to worry about it.
Elliot filled his plate unashamedly with food and finally started on it. "I'm glad that you decided to join us for lunch," he said smiling again and then taking a bite off his plate. He felt completely at ease with Ingrid. He didn't feel that he had to continue to act all proper.

Savannah watched them quietly, pushing her salad around on her plate. She was rather used to feeling like the third wheel whenever Cameron came along to talk with Elliot, but this was different. The smiles, the shivers, the pink cheeks and the lowered eyes.... they didn't escape her notice. Neither of them may have realized it yet, but for Savannah, it was very obvious.
She was happy for Elliot, and she liked Ingrid a lot, even though she had just met her. But she had the distinct feeling that she was losing her brother. She had already lost her mother and Ryder as well... now she was losing Elliot. What was left for her?

Decidedly late for dinner (when was Cameron ever on time, really? Even the rare instances when he had every intention of showing up on time, he'd get distracted and arrive late), Cameron strode into the Great Hall, ignoring the Slytherin table on his left and heading straight for the Ravenclaw table.
In his usual spot was a new face, a redhead from Gryffindor, if he remembered her correctly, though he couldn't place her name for the life of him. Glancing at the three of them in that moment while he remained unnoticed, his eyes fell on Savannah, and he frowned.
"Well, what am I interrupting?" he asked a moment later, boisterous and smiling as he took a seat next to Savannah. She looked.... lost. He wanted to fix it, even if he didn't know what "it" was. "I'm Cameron," he said, extending his hand to Ingrid.

For reasons she couldn't begin to explain, Savannah was absurdly glad to see him, It might have been the first time she had ever smiled, instead of rolling her eyes, when he came over to the table.
But of course, her need to be polite took over, and, before Elliot could get a word in, she said, "Cameron, this is Ingrid. She's a friend of Elliot's. Ingrid, this is Cameron."

Ingrid felt a flutter of nervousness as Elliot's friend Cameron joined them. He was different from Elliot and his sister; he was loud and boisterous. Without even realizing it, she silently slipped her hand in Elliot's under the table, even as she reached the other one out to shake Cameron's. She accompanied this with a shy smile and a nod, but of course, not a word.

Once Cameron arrived, Elliot felt just a small rush of nervousness. He wondered if any teasing was going to start but luckily, nothing of the sort happened. Cameron just came in and took his seat like he usually did.
"Hey Cameron," he said leaning up to look at his friend. Elliot didn't mean to make Savannah feel like she was losing him. That was the last thing that he wanted her to feel. He knew that he wouldn't have moved to far forward without her, or at least he would do his best not to. He knew how Ryder's distance and their mother's death affected her. He couldn't leave her behind.
Elliot felt Ingrid's hand slip into his and he took a bite of food to attempt to keep his cheeks from heating up. He gave her hand a squeeze, letting her know that she didn't have to be nervous around Cameron either. He never meant any harm.
He hoped that Cameron wouldn't say anything about Ingrid not saying anything back to him. Maybe he knew that the girl never verbally spoke to anyone. Although, Elliot knew that he never mentioned anything to his friend about Ingrid coming over for lunch.

Savannah felt torn. She was truly glad Cameron was here, but she was also worried that he might make some sort of rude comment about Ingrid's lack of speech. Yet she could not come up with a polite way to warn him that the girl did not talk. It would have been rude to whisper to him about it, with Ingrid right there next to her. Even if she were to pull him aside and tell him, it would look highly suspicious. All she could do was turn her head to him and raise two fingers to her lips, then shake her head slightly. She hoped he would get the hint.

Cameron smiled, his eyes turning to Savannah when she mentioned who the girl was, and then gave him a little motion. To be honest, he felt kind of offended that they assumed he would make Ingrid feel bad. Truth was, even though he didn't realize right away, he knew she was quiet and didn't talk. He'd learned that a while ago, actually. And he wasn't entirely tactless when he wanted to be smooth.
"It's a pleasure, Ingrid," he said, his smile slipping ever so slightly. He didn't add anything to Savannah or Elliot. Even his friends judged him...
He took a plate and started to load it up. "Try the pineapple sauce on the chicken," he added to whoever might be listening. "It's amazing."

Ingrid, however, wasn't really worried about anything when Cameron arrived. Being a keen observer of people, she knew almost immediately that he wouldn't make any hurtful comments. She knew the type that did. Cameron, however, despite his joking demeanor, would never say anything deliberately hurtful; that much she could see. and if he did blurt something out that was intended to be innocent, she would not have taken offense.
She sensed his awkwardness and frowned slightly, then, at his suggestion, helped herself to a plate of chicken with pineapple sauce, giving him a friendly smile as she did.

Savannah felt a little guilty that she had doubted Cameron. Even though he sometimes picked on her, it was always intended in a playful way, not in a mean way. She had simply feared that he might say something without thinking. But he was on his best behavior, and she couldn't help but feel rather... proud of him.
She bit her lip and sat there with her hands folded in her lap. She wanted to say something to him... to talk to him and get him to tease her like he usually did. But she didn't know what to say. She couldn't even talk about music with him, because he--for reasons she couldn't comprehend--didn't even want Elliot to know about it. It was weird... almost like their little secret.

Cameron smiled at Ingrid as she took his suggestion and tried some of the chicken. At least she wasn't looking at him like he was about to say something really offensive. "I like her, Elliot. She's the only one around here that will humor me."
He started eating, debating whether he should fall silent or just be loud and obnoxious like he normally was. He was just... not in the mood today. No one had ever really seem him in a tired, down mood, though, and he wasn't quite ready for anyone to see past him. He had a slightly unnerving feeling that Ingrid already could. It was the people who lacked in one area... speech, sight, hearing... they always just seemed to know more about the world.
"So, what'd I miss so far?"

Elliot laughed and looked to Ingrid. He was glad that both his sister and Cameron liked her. Of course, there wasn't ever a serious line of doubt that they wouldn't.
At Cameron's question, Elliot's face brightened. Everything felt normal and comfortable. "Nothing really, except Savannah scarfing down three biscuits and then half a piece of chicken in just a couple of minutes. I think she's going to put us to shame." He was only kidding and he knew that Cameron and Savannah knew that. Elliot only gave his sister a hard time whenever Cameron was around just because he knew that he could joke around and Savannah wouldn't take it offensively. He wasn't sure how well she would take it if he gave her a hard time when it was just the two of them.

Savannah's eyes widened and she blushed deeply. "I'll have you know that is not true," she protested, even though she really didn't need to. It was pretty obvious to everyone present that Elliot was joking. In fact, it was fairly obvious that Savannah had not yet eaten a single bite of anything.
She felt so awkward and uncomfortable, she didn't know what to do with herself. She liked Ingrid, so it was nothing against her... and she was used to Cameron. But Elliot... there was something different about him and it scared her. He felt like sand sifting through her fingers. She was losing him, and there wasn't a thing she could do about it.
"I think... I think I'd like to be excused, actually. I'm not feeling very well."
She stood up, her head held high. But she made the mistake of turning a desperate look in Cameron's direction.

"You don't need our permission," Cameron told her, stuffing his mouth without looking at her.
It wasn't said as a joke, and it sounded harsh to him. He didn't mean anything by it, but he knew almost instantly that it was the wrong thing to say to her. This was the only thing that caused him to look up, and his deeply apologetic look met her desperate one.
He opened his mouth, almost asking if she was okay, but the part of his brain that covered 'tact' kicked in, and he stopped himself. He just didn't know a way to get away from Elliot and Ingrid without things looking suspicious.
His eyes flicked to the door quickly, then back to her, silently asking if she wanted him to come with her. He couldn't imagine that she would. He knew fully well that he wasn't the kind of person she would turn to, but that look made him want to help her.

Savannah might have indicated to him that she wanted to come home, if it hadn't been for his comment. That was really the very last straw for her. Of course she had to ask permission; it had been drilled into her head so many times when she was younger that she even had to ask her drunk uncle for permission to leave the table when she was at home, even though she usually didn't get much more than a loud burp in response.
Her chin quivered, and she blinked at Cameron for a second, then turned and walked out of the Great Hall with as much dignity as she could muster. Once out in the hall, however, she broke into a run, stopping at the stairs. She sank down on the bottom step and began to cry, burying her face in her hands.

"Oh, shyte," Cameron muttered when she turned and left. He paid attention to her more than he really paid attention to anything, though he didn't know this, or what it meant. Had it been any other girl, he would have thought nothing of it. But Savannah... he knew he just made her cry.
He sighed and set his fork down. "I upset her," he told Elliot, pushing away from the table and getting to his feet. "It was nice meeting you, Ingrid," he added with a somewhat resigned smile, leaving them as he walked out of the Great Hall.
As it turned out, he didn't have to go far to find her. "Savannah? Come on, I didn't mean it."

It wasn't often that Savannah was caught letting out her emotions in public. Usually she had better control of her emotions than this, and was able to contain her tears until she was truly alone. Even her roommates didn't know that she cried nearly every night. But Cameron caught her at a weak moment, and she wanted more than anything to be consoled by someone.
Looking up at him through tear-filled eyes, she sniffled. "It... it wasn't you. Well, not totally. I just... I don't know.... you'll think it's stupid..."

"Savannah, look at me," Cameron said in an almost incredulous tone. "I'm the last person that should be judging stupid."
He felt it was true. He was the guy who usually took things too far, didn't pay attention, and laughed at inappropriate times. He couldn't think anything was stupid, though this didn't stop him from laughing at a stupid comment or anything. He was human after all.
"What, do you not like Ingrid? Redheads are hard to get along with. I like brunettes, myself." Maybe he was trying to make her laugh- he didn't know. But he was slightly ignorant of the real reason for her mood right now. "Listen... please don't cry. I don't know how to fix that for you."
