At first, when he said that, Callie thought he was talking about her. And maybe it was true; she needed to change the way she looked at people, especially guys. She acted like all guys were the enemy, and while it might have protected her from getting hurt, it also meant that she was alone. But out of her three sisters, Callie was the most passionate. She felt everything very deeply, and the things and people she loved, she loved fiercely. So when she finally fell in love, she would fall hard. That left her more open to being hurt. It was just easier to keep people away.
Realizing that he was talking about Bobby, Callie shook her head. “She’s too inclined to believe the best of people. And I don’t want her to lose that. I don’t want her to become like me.”

"You ain't that bad," Dierks said. "You gave me a chance didn't you? You didn't chase me away with a broomstick in yer hand. Plus, by the way you talk, yer a nice girl and you care a lotta 'bout little kids. You and Bobby are alike with the exception Bobby is just a little more open."
He gave a shrug unsure if she was going to take any kind of defense to that. "And I don't think Bobby will lose anything 'cause she got you fer a sister as well as Linette. Y'all keep an eye on each other."

"You caught me in a good mood, I guess," Callie said with a half-smile. "And you're nicer than most boys. A lot of boys think they're so charming and funny, but they don't impress me."
Apparently, all it took to impress her was a cute southern accent and a set of dimples. It surprised her, too, actually, and she wasn't quite sure what to do about it. Unlike Bobby, Callie really didn't think that men and women could be just friends. The way she saw it, one of them (usually the guy) wanted more. But she was sort of liking the idea of being friends with Dierks. More than that... she was not ready to think about yet.
"That's the thing about sisters. We may sometimes get annoyed with each other, but when it really counts, we have to look out for each other. It's like looking out for yourself in a way."
