Sabrina had sent a note to the Gryffindor Common room, asking Remus to meet her at the lake. She felt a horrible ache in her chest and it was taking every bit of strength she had not to burst out crying. She really didn't want to do what she was about to do, but then, she didn't want to die, either. But most of all, she didn't want to hurt Remus. Although she knew breaking up with him would hurt, she thought it was better to face a tough but survivable amount of pain now, than an unbearable amount of pain later.*
*I freely admit to stealing this line from last night's Veronica Mars.

Remus had received the note from Sabrina and wandered out to the lake to meet her. He'd even managed to transfigure an old quill into a single rose for her. He thought that impress her and maybe even make her smile. She hadn't been doing that much lately. When he saw her, he broke into a wide grin. "Hey, Sabrina. You wanted to meet me?"

Sabrina looked at Remus and tried to fight back the tears that threatened to fill her eyes. Forcing a smile onto her face, she simply said, "Hi, Remus. Come sit down." She patted the spot next to her.

Remus sat down next to her and handed her the rose. "Here. I, uh... I transfigured it for you. It was a quill before." He waited to see the smile on her face.

Sabrina took the rose from him. "Thank you," she said, "it's beautiful." She lifted it to her nose and smelled its scent. But instead of smiling, she abruptly burst into tears.

"Sabrina?" Remus gasped. "What's wrong?" He awkwardly put his arms around her, letting her cry on his shoulder. "Please... don't cry... let me help..."

Sabrina cried for a few minutes, leaning heavily on Remus's shoulder. She was feeling more confused than ever. She didn't think she was really in love with Remus, but she definitely cared about him. And she didn't want to hurt him. But she couldn't help but feel that, no matter what she did, she would end up hurting him. She still wished there was a way to prevent Natalie's vision from coming true, but she couldn't see any way out of it. She didn't want to die...
Pulling away, she looked at Remus tearfully. How was she supposed to tell him that she couldn't see him anymore? How was she going to make him understand that this was for his own good?

"What is it, Sabrina?" Remus asked worriedly. "Come on, you can tell me. I'll help you however I can. Or do you want me to get someone for you? Professor Rothschild, or Lucie?"

"No... no, it's OK," Sabrina said, wiping her eyes. "I just really need to talk to you right now." She looked at him sadly. "Remus.... I don't know how to tell you this, but... I... I can't see you anymore."

Remus stared at her, suddenly feeling as though he'd been punched in the stomach. "Wha--what? Why?" he gasped, confused.

Sabrina looked away. "I... it's hard to explain. It's just... I like you and everything, I do... I just... I'm going through something and I don't want to burden you..."

Remus frowned. "That's rubbish," he said. "If you're going through something, tell me what it is. Let me help you. It's not a burden, OK? We're... well, you're my girlfriend. And... and part of that means being friends. And friends help each other when they're in trouble, right?"

Sabrina cried harder. "Remus, you're so sweet... I wish I could explain, but it's... it's complicated, OK? I wish you could help me, but you can't. Please... it's better this way..."

Remus was feeling very confused. "Sabrina, please... Talk to me. Just tell me what's going on. Even... even if I can't actually help you, maybe it will help just to talk about it. Please? Whatever it is, it can't be a reason to break up... unless... did I do something wrong?"

"No... no, you didn't, Remus. You're fine. Please... it's me. I... I can't explain. I have to go. Just... please, forget about me, OK?" She hugged him, kissed him full on the lips, then abruptly got up and ran back toward the castle.

Remus watched her go, tears of confusion burning in his eyes. He couldn't understand what had just happened. There seemed to be no reason for Sabrina to break up with him, and yet, she had just done it. "Girls!" he said in frustration. Then he turned and stared out at the lake, trying not to cry.

Natalie had been sitting up in the tree the whole time, and she'd heard everything that Sabrina had said. She shook her head sadly. It just wasn't fair. She knew exactly why Sabrina had felt the need to break up with Remus. Oh, if only she hadn't seen the stupid vision! Was it better for Sabrina to know that she was going to die soon? Or was she better off not knowing? And was it really better for Remus to be sad now instead of later? Was it good for Sabrina to be alone through all of this? Natalie wished she knew.
She looked down at Remus and thought how sad he looked. This couldn't be better for him. And it certainly wasn't better for Sabrina. Natalie once again wished she'd never been born with her strange powers. Sabrina didn't need this kind of burden on her head. She should be trying to enjoy her life, however long it would last.
Natalie climbed down out of the tree and jumped down next to Remus. "Hi," she said sadly. "I... I'm sorry."

Aaaaaahhhh!" Remus cried, turning quickly to face her. "Were... were you up there the whole time? You heard everything, didn't you?"

"I... I'm sorry," Natalie said quietly. "I heard the whole thing. Um... my sister is being an idiot."

"No, she's not!" Remus protested. "She's just... uh... she's upset. I don't know what she's upset about, though... do you?" He looked at her hopefully.
