Sydney smiled at her friend. In this moment, she felt the distance between them more acutely than ever. Yes, she had tried to write to Noelle (and Cale) while she was away, but the truth was, they had not been face to face in eight years. That was a long time, and so much could happen during such a length of time. People changed. Noelle was still the same in most ways, but Sydney knew she had changed.
"Yeah, you get to meet him. I was going to have him come and meet us for dessert, actually... But I don't want you to feel like you're betraying Cale. It's bad enough that I'm betraying him. Maybe..." She trailed off. What was the right way to do this? Was there a right way to do it?
"Maybe you should wait until after I tell Cale."
(I'm sort of itching to have Sydney and Cale meet up soon... I was watching an old episode of Charmed the other night, and he was in it... so cute! lol)

"Syd...."
Noelle hesitated here, unsure if she should say it or not. It couldn't hurt anything, right? "I'm not betraying Cale. I've spent the last 8 years checking up on your husband while you've been away.... And when he tried to visit you and you found some reason for him not to come... he called me, you know? I'm sure this guy is amazing, and he must be to deserve you... but I'm still going to like Cale better." On principle, alone.
"Bring the guy in. I want to meet him."

Sydney was starting to realize what a bad idea this really was. Coming back here, bringing Adam, getting engaged again at all. She'd made so many mistakes with Cale, and still he remained loyal. She didn't deserve him; she never had. And maybe she didn't deserve Adam, either. She was probably just going to make the same mistake all over again, because she had never really known how to handle her personal life. Relationships took work, and she was too busy with her actual work to give it the attention that it deserved. That had been her excuse with Cale, so how long would it be before she ruined things with Adam as well?
"Noelle..." she began, not sure what to say. She'd even ruined her friendship with Noelle.
She let out a sigh. "I never deserved Cale. I wish I had realized that sooner... I wish I had told him sooner. But I can't change what's happened... so what do I do now?"

Noelle made a slight face. "That sounds an awful lot like taking the easy way out," she commented. It wasn't to be mean. Despite the years, she still considered Syd her best friend. But saying that she never deserved Cale... well, that was just too easy.
"You need to tell him, Syd. You need to at least go say goodbye to him. You owe him that much, don't you?" It would break his heart, but she knew the guy well enough to know that he wasn't going to be surprised. Hurt, but not surprised.
"But in the mean time.... where is this guy? As your best friend, you do know that you require my approval before you do anything serious." She was trying to ease the situation by making light of things. She only hoped Cale could do the same when he was in her shoes.

Sydney sighed. "Of course I'm going to tell him," she said guiltily. "Even I know there are somethings that have to be done in person... it's why I came back. I could have just filed for divorce and had the papers sent here... But I know that wouldn't be fair to Cale."
This had been a mistake, she knew that now. She shouldn't have stayed away so long... she should have tried to give Cale a second chance. Maybe she should have let him come and visit her one of the many times he had written to arrange it. But most of all, she never should have let things go so far with Adam, at least until she had officially ended things with Cale.
There was even a part of Sydney that wondered whether she would still feel those old feelings when she saw Cale again. She had loved him passionately once. The passion had burned out, but maybe it could have been rekindled somehow, if she had tried. The problem was that she let her career get in the way. She let her ambition cancel out passion and love.
"He'll be here soon," she said, but her tone was sad. She had botched this up badly, and she wouldn't blame Noelle if she never wanted to see her again after all of this was over. After she broke Cale's heart.

Noelle just frowned at this. She could have commented that having a marriage should have been done in person, too, but despite this loyalty to Cale, Syd was still her best friend, and frankly, she always would be. Noelle didn't have it in her to make that snarky comment- and she didn't hold back for just anyone.
"How long are you going to be in town?" Noelle asked, decided to steer the subject away from either of the men right now. How was it that Sydney got two guys lusting after her, and Noelle was married to her work, anyway? "It would be nice to catch up with you without dropping the bombshells."
