"Nothing here really screams 'home,' does it?" Riley murmured, smiling and keeping in good spirits. Geoff needed it, she thought. She needed to show him that everything was okay, even though it really wasn't. He needed to believe it was.
She shrugged at his question. "I've never really been one to eat much when I'm stressed, and lately.... but I can keep things down now, and I'm trying to eat as much as I can." It was somthing that was worrying her, actually, and she wasn't naive enough to think it escape anyone's notice how little she ate. She was really going to owe this baby.
"Your dad must be filling out loads of paperwork to get you out of here."

Christine continued to pack, silently letting the two converse, while she too had the Montgomery born and bred hostess ingrained into her system she had grown quite accustomed to keeping quiet. Then again she often had too much on her mind to really share any of it.
She heard baby and though it should have struck something inside of her she simply wasn't paying enough attention. Rather she was more in tune with her brother seeing how he was feeling or dealing and whether or not he needed her.
"I threatened the household to give Geoff some space when he got home...I think we should be set for a quiet dinner..maybe even sneak some Chinese in one of the guest rooms and hide out if you wanted to come." she offered Riley. She wasn't about to let the family crowd her brother after this. Merlin knew he would have enough trouble adjusting. Perhaps Riley could use some space as well, and perhaps they could reconnect while they were at it. It hurt Christine to think of Geoffrey in so much pain because of his relationship with Riley, and what he had done under the imperious. She just wanted Geoff to be happy again, for the people around her to breathe easy for a while.

Geoffrey's frown deepened. He wasn't exactly satisfied with her answer. And yet, it wasn't really his problem, was it? It was Roland's job to make sure she took care of herself and got enough to eat. The irony of Roland, who was notorious in the family for his poor eating habits, being responsible for making sure someone else got enough to eat, did not escape him.
Of course, he didn't say any of that. He was determined not to mention Roland's name. He was still angry, and right now, he couldn't see that changing.
"Are you having any weird cravings yet? You know, like pickles and ice cream?"

Riley laughed, not entirely unaware of the strained atmosphere between them. "Merlin, no. I hate pickles."
Already having read quite a bit about pegnancies though, she knew she would start to crave the things that her body needed. She'd take it as it came, she reasoned.
Equally unwilling to mention Roland's name, and hating herself for it, she shrugged. "Emotions are all over the place though. So far, nothing else has changed." She was fine... It was him she was worried about, him she wanted to make sure was okay. "How about you? We've established the food here is terrible, but you're eating, right?"

Eating was, happily, not one of the problems Geoffrey was having. The hospital food was terrible, but Christine smuggled him lots of good food from home, so that was keeping him healthy.
He gave Riley a knowing look, and for a moment, it was almost as if nothing had changed. He looked like his old self. And although it was gone as soon as it had appeared, just the sight of was enough to give anyone who observed it hope.
"Have you ever known me not to eat?" he joked. "I'll even eat this crappy hospital food.... but at least Christine brings me good stuff from home."

Christine smiled up at him at the mention of her name," Are you kidding, he'd eat a cement sandwich if you made one for him." she laughed, " Which is about all the hospital cafeteria's good for anyway." she leaned back from her packing to give him a smile, "It was my pleasure as well as Cook's to see to your proper eating."

Geoffrey grinned at his sister. "I wish Cook didn't always make such healthy food, though. I really could go for a really greasy cheeseburger and fries. Oh... or there are these things Alison makes... Fried potato cakes. They're amazing. When I get home, maybe I'll try to make them... she showed me how."
But thinking of Alison reminded him again that he'd been avoiding her. And in that moment, he realized that he really missed her. He wondered if she'd ever bother to try seeing him again, or if he'd lost his chance with her.

Christine seemed to sense where his thoughts were and she bit her lip. She cared so much for her brother, really his well being was all she was thriving for at the moment, but she couldn't be everything for him, he needed to restore the relationships he had and become whole again. Christine didn't so much care what happened to her, so long as her brother was happy she'd be okay, she could live vicariously through him.
"I'm sure if you mentioned it to Mum, you'd be in grease heaven in a heartbeat, you know she's going to be positively fussy."

Geoffrey managed a light laugh. "Maybe I will mention it to Mum. Normally, she doesn't approve of me eating greasy foods, but I bet she'll fuss over me for a while..."
He let out a sigh. Somehow, this whole process made him feel like he was a little kid coming home from the hospital after a case of dragon pox, and not the more dire situation of being cursed with the Imperious Curse. For nearly the thousandth time, he wished that had actually been the case. The reality was just too frightening to think about.
"So, er.... Riley... Are you still on suspension? When do you go back to work?"

Riley was optimistic about Geoff going home. Hopefully it would raise his spirits and make him just a little happier.
She was drawn out of her thoughts when he awkwardly addressed her again, and she sighed, over-exaggerating a roll of her eyes. "I'm still on suspension. In fact, I have a feeling that I'm going to be on suspension until I'm too pregnant to go back to work. I'm convinced that's Angelique's plan. And it will drive me crazy."
She didn't ask when he planned to go back to work, or even if he did. She couldn't imagine him wanting to go back into the office where he had been attacked not long ago.
"You'll have to visit me to keep me sane."

Geoffrey shook his head, still trying as hard as he could to keep his attitude upbeat and light. "Nah, I'm sure she'll let you back before then. She wants that murder case solved, after all, and it'll take longer to brief a new auror on the case than it will be to just bring you two back to solve it."
Again he was carefully alluding to Roland, without actually saying his name. But at least this time he was able to keep from making a face when he spoke about Roland.

Was he alluding to Roland? She honestly couldn't tell. Even if he was, she had kept Roland up to date on the case, anyway, getting what help she could from him in the safe house.
She shrugged. "Maybe. I guess it's just hurry up and wait, right?"
She opened her mouth to say something else, but closed it quickly, opting to chew on the inside of her lip instead. She hated feeling this lost around him.
"I should probably duck out before your parents get here," she said at length, knowing they were just down the hall filling out the paperwork. "It's good to see you looking better," she told him.

He felt similarly lost around her. After all, he had tried to kill her. Yes, he'd been under the Imperious Curse, but there was still that tiny part of him that felt like he should have tried harder to fight it. Like he should have seen what was coming and fought back, or not gone off alone with the man who had ended up cursing him.
And yet, if he really thought about it, he would realize there wasn't a damn thing he could have done. He was not an auror; he was not trained to fight the power of the curse or to fight against attackers using Unforgivables. And there was nothing about the way the man had acted that would have clued him in to what was about to happen.
When she said she was leaving, he stood up and pulled her into a hug. Even there, he could feel a wall between them, and for once, it was entirely on his side. "Thanks for stopping by," he said.

Christine used to be a lot better at this sort of thing. She used to know what to say to make awkwardness disappear but lately that skill had fled along with all other traces of the Christine she had used to be. Now she could only stand as a quiet strength and hopefully not let anyone down.
