Jamie gave his eldest brother a small smile, that was definately a start. Scarlette had mentioned wanting to live close to one of his brothers, in case they ever needed help. Of course, Jamie had agreed. These were dangerous times, and having a full auror who they could fully trust was a great plus.
But being rational, Jamie's smile turned into a frown. There would still be costs to deal with, especially since he didn't have a job. He had minimal savings, as he believed nothing out of the ordinary would happen in his life, for he wasn't spontaneous.
"That would mean the world to both of us," Jamie said. "We would really appreciate having you two around. But I'm not sure we could afford something too big yet. We're a little shorthanded..."

Roland nodded and glanced at Cyrus. At least Jamie was practical and detail-oriented; he was able to look at each thing that he needed and try to put the pieces together. That was a point in his favor, and in a way, it was better than Roland's more impulsive way of handling things. Here Jamie was, trying to make plans for a baby, and Roland really hadn't done that yet for his and Riley's baby.
"OK.... a job. Well, you don't have to move into the apartment just yet... You'll be at school for a few months. I can just hold onto the apartment and save it for you. I'll take care of the rent until you move in... I have a good bit of savings built up. In the meantime, you could maybe get a part-time job in Hogsmeade, as long as it won't interfere with your studies. Are you still thinking about being an Auror?"

"I couldn't have you do that," Jamie shook his head. "I wouldn't want to ask too much of you, I'm sure just living next to one of you would be adequate."
Jamie was terrible at asking favors, especially, as he just found out, from his own family. He was almost considering telling them it was a joke to take it all back. Jamie felt like he was going to throw up, with out any help from the firewhiskey. He felt like he was making himself look like a charity case, rather than someone who needed some guidance. There seemed to be a thin line, and Jamie must have crossed it.
"But yes, an auror. That would be my profession of choice," Jamie managed to give a small smile. "I'm not quite sure of the consequences, and I'd appreciate some help on the steps to becoming one."

"Hey, don't worry about it," Cyrus spoke up. "We're here to help you. That's what family is for." He gave a smile. Roland helped Cyrus come through, and it was time that he repay his debt. He would be there for both Jamie and Roland whenever they needed it. Taking the step to ask Lina to marry him made him become more mature than what he had been. He knew what it took to start a family and if he could offer assistance from what he learned, then he would help.
"Going through Auror training is not that bad. I made it through didn't I?" Cyrus grinned and took a drink of his butterbeer. "And if Scarlette wants to, and this goes for Riley too," he said glancing to Roland, "Lina probably wouldn't mind helping them if they need any help."

"We'll help you," Roland said again. "Just... don't worry... I'll make sure the apartment is available for you when you two are ready to move into it, OK? And for the auror training, you should talk to Professor Macrae, your head of house. I think there's a program that's helping prospective aurors get acquainted with the job.... There were a couple of seventh year students at the auror party the other day. They can get you set up, so that you can start training and get ready to take the test. And like Cyrus said... if he can do it, you definitely can."
He sounded confident and reassuring, but he was actually very worried for Jamie. He was likely to have a difficult couple of months, at least, until everything was in place. And even afterward, he would have to get adjusted to being responsible so soon. Roland was proud of Jamie, but worried as well. Roland knew perfectly well that when he graduated from school, he would have been nowhere near ready to have a wife or a child.
He glanced at Cyrus, and was also very proud of he was taking control of the situation as well. He had changed during the two months since Roland had been gone... He had taken his responsibility seriously. "I think Riley would like that. Maybe the three girls could go out together and go shopping for baby supplies."

Both of his elder brothers sounded reassuring, and almost light about the subject. It gave Jamie hope, making the bindings around his lungs a little looser. He was capable of taking a breathe that let an entire new supply of oxygen fill his lungs. The little support did make the difference he really hadn't expected.
"I'll pay you back for apartment when I can, I swear. I can't have you spending money on me when you have your own baby on the way," Jamie said firmly, although he managed a smile at the jokes towards Cyrus. "That's a little refreshing. Most people say it's grueling. I wasn't looking too forward to that. How long until I can become a full auror?" The impatience in his own voice made Jamie wince. He wasn't acting on a level headed basis. He apologized for it immediately, "Sorry about the anxeity."
"I'll ask Scarlette," Jamie nodded. That would be good, Scarlette could observe to find out what the two needed to buy and save up just a bit more before any actual purchases were made.

"It isn't easy, but you can do it," Roland assured him. "I passed the test on my first try, but it usually takes most people a couple of tries. As soon as you pass the test, you'll probably get a training mission with a more experienced partner. After that, you'll be a full auror."
He paused to take a drink from his glass, then hesitantly brought up another issue that was weighing on him. "Listen, Jamie... I know you don't want to tell Mum and Dad yet, and I don't blame you. But you're going to have to do it eventually. And when you do... if you feel like you need backup, we'll both be there for you, OK? We've both been there, and we'll support you."
He looked over at Cyrus, silently asking for confirmation.

"Don't worry if you'll pass the Auror test, because we all know that you will. You'll be a full auror before you know it." He knew that it made someone anxious, after all, Cyrus thought the day would have never come.
"Exactly. I think they would rather you just tell them rather than them finding out themselves. They may act a little, well, I doubt they will act like they did with me, but you know that we're there to support you. After all, that's what brothers are supposed to do." Cyrus gave Jamie a smile. He knew that there was no way that Cara and Mathieu would treat Jamie like they did him, nor would they treat Roland that way either. Cyrus was relieved to know that they wouldn't go through that.

"That doesn't sound too bad," Jamie mumbled softly into his drink. Scarlette had been worried that he would be hurt. But the aurors weren't like death eaters. The ministry was more into the concept of comradship, and having your partner's back. He shook his head softly, before telling himself that this is what he wanted. Jamie had always wanted to be an auror. This would help in the long run, despite the worries.
"Right, I'm sure I'll tell them soon," Jamie sighed. He'd pushed it out of his mind for as long as he could, knowing that his mother and father weren't generally known for the compassion towards unexpected surprises in the family department. "I would like to tell them myself, but I would like to have a general map of my life. I would really appreciate you guys being there." He looked down at his drink instead of looking them in the eyes.

"I don't blame you for not wanting to tell them yet," Roland said. "In fact, if I were you, I wouldn't tell them until you have all your plans worked out as much as you can. They might freak out a little less if they know you're thinking this through and being responsible. Prove you're better than Cyrus and I are... Show that you're not just rushing into something without thinking it through."
Oddly enough, despite the situation, Roland was actually quite proud of how Jamie was handling the whole thing. Just by coming to them for help, he was being very smart. Cyrus hadn't come to anyone until the last minute, and Roland couldn't help but wonder if that was part of what had made their parents so angry.
Still, Jamie was definitely not going to have an easy time of it, no matter how prepared he was. It had been a rough year for the family--and Roland knew perfectly well that he was a big part of that problem--and this was just one more frustration to add to the mix.
"Poor Amandine," Roland added with a slight laugh. "She's never going to be allowed to date after all this."

"I'm thinking of going to meet Scarlette's mom first, just to see if we have any support there in case things go more horribly than I'd like to imagine. You can't imagine how relieved I am that you aren't trying to tell me I'm irresponsible or anything along those lines. Thank you," Jamie shot the elder two Ferreras a small smile.
"I really don't know what to expect. From the baby, from the rest of the family, from the teachers, it's all new territory," Jamie confessed softly. "I'm trying to keep Scarlette in good spirits, and making it seem like it'll be fine. But I really don't have any knowledge of anything except the present. How am I supposed to make enough money before I'm an auror? And how will I be able to spend anytime with my family if I'm always out on missions? What if I die, and they're left all alone? What kind of person will that make me?"
Jamie managed a dry smile about Ama. "I already hate who she brought to the Yule Ball. He's disrespectful, and a bad influence, I'm sure."

Roland took a sip from his drink. “We’d be hypocrites if we tried to tell you that you were irresponsible,” he said with a crooked grin. “And it doesn’t really help to get mad at you or lecture you… What matters now is that we all pull together and help you figure things out.”
Of course, he wished Jamie had been just a little older, at least, because he was never going to get the chance to be on his own and learn to be responsible for himself first. But Jamie was smart, and Roland had every confidence in him. He could do this.
“And look on the bright side. You and I get to go through all of this together,” he pointed out. “And we’ve got Cyrus here to give us advice. And who knows? I might actually even listen to him.”
He laughed at this comment, but when Jamie mentioned the possibility that he might be killed in action, Roland sobered up quickly. “I can’t tell you that’s not possible,” he said honestly. “But you’re just going to have to be as careful as you can. And if the worst does happen, you know that the rest of us will be there for Scarlette and the baby, whatever they need.”

Jamie smiled at the hypocrisy comment. That was a strong reason he had come to his brothers. Instead of getting angry and giving him stern remarks, they'd be able to help. There wasn't anything that Jamie needed at that particular moment besides support and advice. And although nothing had been said out loud, Jamie could feel that Roland truly believed in him. That made him feel lighter.
Jamie laughed, "This would be an excellent opportunity to start listening to Cyrus." Jamie turned to the middle Ferrera. "You've had it pretty rough. I'm just glad that everything is working out. For the both of you. It's a little hard to believe that a few weeks ago everything had fallen apart."
"I'm not as concerned about what happens to me as I'm worried about Scarlette and our baby. As harsh as it sounds, I'm not sure that Cara and Mathieu will nessecarily be open to supporting them. It's a relief you'll be there for her. I couldn't ever leave her behind. Just the thought of it," Jamie bit his lip before drinking the last bit of fire whiskey. "I've never been more terrified in my entire life."
Jamie had never had such a long conversation with someone in his family before. He'd never said so much in one sitting (not including most conversations he had with Scarlette). He wasn't sure if it was the emotion overload or the amount of alcohol in his blood. Jamie didn't mind either way, the things he wanted to say were getting out in the open.

"Funny Roland," Cyrus said not being able to hide his smile at his brother's comment. "Thanks Jamie, and hey who knows, maybe my advice will be the best you ever get."
He shrugged as Jamie said that he had had it rough. "It was a little rough, but there was always Lina. Sure, things got a little rough with her too, but everything worked out just like everything always will."
Cyrus drank from his butterbeer. "I don't think they'll close you off Jamie. I know that at first they'll probably be shocked, but it'll wear off. They'll probably help you more than you think. After all, they did it with one son and that didn't end up too well at first, but I think we all learned to just accept it and things are alright now. I don't think they'll go through everything again with another son."
He offered Jamie a smile. "Everything will work out for the best, I promise."

Roland nodded in agreement to Cyrus's words. "As much as it pains me to say these words, Jamie, Cyrus is right. Don't count out Mum and Dad completely. They won't be happy, but I think they learned from their mistake with Cyrus. They also... well, after what happened with me... I don't think they're going to be so quick to push you out. They do love you... they love all of us, and they won't want to lose you. Just make sure you have everything figured out as much as possible before you go talk to them. They'll be mad, but they'll also be proud if they see that you've thought things through and are prepared to face the future, whatever it holds. Are you planning to marry Scarlette? Have you asked her yet?"

"It's easier for me to expect the worse and come out with better than vice versa. I don't really want to be able to think I can count on Cara and Matheiu and then be left without anything. And if they're better, then it's a weight off my shoulders," Jamie sighed. "I just feel like this way I can't really lose in a way."
"I have been thinking things out, but Scarlette and I need to agree virtually one hundred percent before anything actually is set in stone. It's going to be a joint effort the entire way through."
If one topic had been pushing at Jamie's mind, it was getting married to Scarlette. He wanted to, but that felt a little less important than everything else going on. There were so many different desicions to make. And getting married would add another billion things on the list to do. Jamie wanted to sit down in a couple of months and really think everything out, but at this moment in time, it seemed like a bad idea.
"I don't know," Jamie mumbled.

Roland was quiet for a few minutes as he watched Jamie. He kept thinking to himself how very different his youngest brother was from Cyrus. While Cyrus seemed to be an open book, Jamie was such a mystery to him. Roland could never tell just what he was thinking or feeling at any given moment. Did he love Scarlette? Roland didn’t think that he would have slept with the girl if he didn’t love her, but Jamie was just so young, and he kept everything so close to the vest. Maybe he was different with Scarlette.
But Roland had always known that Cyrus loved Lina, and anyone could see how deeply Roland loved Riley just by mentioning her name to him. And for him, marrying Riley was very much at the front of his mind—not because of the baby, but just because he loved her. And ultimately, that was the real reason to get married… not because there was a baby on the way. Even if Riley wasn’t pregnant, Roland still would want to marry her. Maybe it was best if Jamie waited until he was sure he was marrying for the right reasons.
“It’s OK,” he said at last. “It’s no rush, and I’m not pushing you for it. I know you’ve got a lot on your plate right now, and that’s really the least of your worries. I just… I don’t want you to wait too long to decide, and have Scarlette get frustrated with you, like Lina did with Cyrus. But you do have time. And I do think you’re going about this the right way.”

It was quiet for what seemed like a lifetime in Jamie's mind. He wondered what was running through his brothers' mind. Were they really being honest? Or were they silently very angry that he had taken such a turn in what they might have previously thought was his life path? There were a thousand things that could be going through Cyrus and Roland's minds. But Jamie didn't know them well enough to try and make a correct hypothesis. Jamie was definately glad that they had so far been more supportive than he could have possibly imagined.
"Thank you," Jamie said. "You're right, I should probably talk to Scarlette about this more. And thank you. I just think I don't need to give her a ring to tell her that I love her. I really hope she'd know that by now," Jamie gave a small smile before looking directly into Roland's eyes. "Scarlette is the only person I though I could confide in. She's everything I'm not, and she makes me feel like there's more to Jamie than just the quiet, unoriginal middle Ferrera boy. there's no way I'm going to lose her or the baby."
After saying all that, Jamie realized that he didn't really answer any of the things that Roland had just said. But he was always more open when Scarlette was around, and Jamie knew that. He guessed that even the mere mention of her made him elevate into the Jamie that she knew, rather than just the quiet boy he always was.

Hearing all of that, Roland relaxed visibly. That was actually what he needed to hear. Jamie could be so hard to read and Roland needed to be sure that he was happy with the situation as it had worked out. If, for some reason, he regretted what had happened, or had his doubts about his feelings for Scarlette, Roland couldn't let Jamie go out of his way to do "the right thing" and make himself--as well as Scarlette and the baby eventually--unhappy in the process. But it seemed that Jamie really did love Scarlette, and Roland couldn't have been happier for his little brother. It maye have happened faster and earlier than anyone had expected, but then, that seemed to be the Ferrera way, didn't it?
"Good," he said. "I'm glad. That's all I want for you, you know... to be happy. And if Scarlette makes you happy, then I will absolutely support you in any way that you need."
He took another sip of his drink, then laughed lightly. "Who knew I was the old fashioned one? I've already got a ring for Riley, and I'm waiting for the right moment to give it to her."
