When she pulled her hand away, he was tempted to just grab it but he didn't want to scare her. It was one of the first times that he had seen her act somewhat shy. From what he noticed she had confidence and now she was biting her lower lip and a pink was rising to her cheeks.
Austin, not wanting to put her on the spot about it, just continued to smile. "I'm only being honest," he replied.
Clearing his throat, he grinned widely and picked up the rolled up piece of straw paper and threw it at her.

It was easy to joke around and tease. And it was easy to be flirtacious and forward. One night stands were easy, and so were casual relationships. But when things got too close, too emotional, that was when Paige got scared. She had given her body away freely in the past, but her heart... well, that she was protective of.
Luckily, he broke the tension by throwing the straw paper at her. She burst out laughing, and looked up at him. "Oh, you!" she said, tossing her napkin at him. "You are crazy!"

"Why thank you," he said with laughter. Her napkin didn't go very far. Austin picked it up and slid it back to her. "Throwing napkins? Now who's the crazy one?" He had a playful look on his face.
Austin laughed out again as the waitress brought out their food and an extra bottle of ketchup. "Thanks," he said to her as she turned around and walked away. "Food is one thing I will not throw so you don't have to worry about that."

Paige smiled. "Glad to know that you have your priorities," she teased.
Her eyes widened at the size of the hamburger in front of her. "Honestly, you didn't tell me it was a whole side of beef!" she said with a laugh. "If I eat this whole thing, you really are going to have to roll me out of here."
She reached across the table and picked a cheese fry from the platter. "These look perfect... just the right combination of gooey and greasy..."

"You didn't expect the burgers to be really small did you," he asked playfully. "And never worry, if I have to carry you out of here, I will. That will not be a problem." Austin winked before added a little more ketchup to his burger.
"I bet you could eat the entire thing. Don't worry, I'm not going to judge you because that would be completely wrong of me whenever I'm about to eat mine and then some fries, and probably dessert." He grinned before he picked up his burger. "And the fries are perfect, that I promise."

Paige shook her head at him. He had such crazy ideas, and she just didn't know what to make of him sometimes. "I'm positive that I can't eat this whole thing, plus fries, and a milkshake," she said. "But I promise I'll do what I can. I'll just have to give up eating for the rest of the week. I couldn't possibly eat like this every day, or I'd weigh 300 pounds."
She gave him a sideways look. "Would you still like me if I weighed 300 pounds?"

"Skipping meals is not healthy," he said. "Especially missing out on food for a week." Austin raised an eyebrow. "You're seriously asking me that? Of course I'd still like you if you weighed 300 pounds. Why would you be any different if you weighed that? Nothing would change, except you'd have a bigger stomach."
Girls worrying about their physical image could boggle Austin's mind in a heart beat. He liked a girl that didn't mind going without make up out in public or going out dressed in something comfortable rather than something dressy, although Paige had his full undivided attention.
"Would you still like me if I weighed 300 pounds?"

Damn him for turning it around on her. The truth was, Paige was very vain. She was beautiful and she knew it. And it was important to her that she stay that way. She knew that her best feature was her long, slender legs, and it was important to her that she maintain them. And to do that, sometimes she had to starve herself. This... this was an indulgence that she allowed herself only very rarely.
Would she still like Austin if he were 300 pounds? She honestly didn't know. But then, she wasn't entirely sure how she felt about him now, either. Actually, that was a lie, she knew how she felt. She just was afraid to admit it, because she didn't trust it.
"Who says I like you now?" she replied teasingly.

"For one, you accepted my flowers. You could have just thrown them back at me and that would have told me that you didn't like me. You also agreed to come to lunch with me and you're sitting here in front of me now still talking to me. In addition to all of that, you joking around and teasing with me." Austin smiled broadly. "All of that says you like me." He winked at her before taking a drink from his cup and stuffed a fry in his mouth.

"Well, you did happen to bring my favorite flowers," Paige said. "That's a point in your favor. And you're bribing me with cheese fries. All in all, you're really just preying on my weaknesses, and that doesn't necessarily mean I like you," she teased.
Then she squinted playfully at him, as if carefully assessing him.
"I mean, I suppose you're not bad, you're even kind of cute and sweet. But it takes a lot more than forget-me-nots and cheese fries to win me over. I'm a girl with very high standards."

Austin, with his elbows still resting on the table, laughed. "Cute and sweet. That's a new one on me." He shook his head. "Although, I do thank you for the compliment." He stuffed a cheese fry into his mouth.
"Very high standards hm," Austin said after swallowing. "So, bringing you flowers and giving you cheese fries is not enough." He acted as if he were thinking hard for a moment. "What if I brought my guitar into the Daily Prophet and started to singing to you in front of people, would that win you over?"

Paige had to laugh at the mental image that created. She tried to imagine how she would react if he actually went ahead and did such a thing. She was pretty sure she would act shocked and embarrassed, but secretly be flattered.
But what she said was quite different. "Well, I guess it would have to depend on the song you sang and how well you sang it. I imagine you're a pretty good singer, although I haven't heard you sing yet. But if you sang something ridiculous, I'd probably be embarrassed and would have to pretend I didn't know you. But if it was sweet and romantic... well, you just might win me over."
And if he happened to guess her favorite song, which was Can't Help Falling in Love with You by Elvis Presley, she would have been absolute putty in his hands. But she was not about to tell him that.

"Darn. I was going to write some kind of corny song and just start playing it at your desk." Austin gave a defeated look but a smile quickly chased it away. "I'll think of something. It'll be something good. Maybe I'll do two songs, one while I walk in, and another while I'm at your desk. That would be something."
Austin had never sung for a particular person but he could make a change. "You'll just have to wait and see what I come up with. I'm sure that you'll love it and I promise not to embarrass you."

Paige rolled her eyes and pretended to look annoyed. "Well, you can't do it now," she said. "Something like that... it has to be a surprise. You can't tell me you're doing it, you have to just do it. Now I'm going to be expecting it and that won't do any good. You're just going to have to come up with something else. And you can't tell me about it, because then it doesn't seem spontaneous."
She took a bite of her burger and watched him with a little smile on her face. She had issued him a challenge nowm and she was cuirious to see how he would respond.

"See, that's the thing, it was just an idea. I didn't say that I was definitely going to do that." He gave her a wink. "I'll promise to come up with a good idea and you'll find out what it is, eventually." Several more ideas started to run through his head but he didn't comment. He was going to do his best to surprise her.
Austin picked up his burger again and looked teasingly at her before taking a bite, only to have ketchup smeared on his face. Before she could become disgusted, he picked up his napkin and wiped his face.
"Are you into movies?"

Paige's cheeks felt warm. Why was he trying so hard to impress her? What did he want, really? She'd never had a man try to romance her, and she didn't quite know what to make of it. She was used to flirtations that usually ended in them sleeping together on the first date. Sometimes they were one night stands, sometimes the relationships lasted a little longer. But romance... After all Paige had seen and done, she thought romance was dead. It was the 1970s, girls weren't courted anymore. Guys didn't need to try to sweep a girl off her feet. That was what she thought, anyway.
She was still blushing as he smeared ketchup on his face. That made her laugh, and she felt some of her uncertainty begin to fade. Austin didn't take things too seriously, and she appreciated that.
"Yeah, I've seen some movies... Mostly when I was in America. Why?"

The blush on Paige's cheeks seemed to brighten her eyes and Austin found that he liked that. Once he made a mental note of seeing if he could make her do that more, he swallowed his food. His napkin was still in his hand and he gave her an almost teasing look. He loved to hear her laughter but he was a little scared that if he made the comment about it, it would chase her away.
"Well, I was thinking a few minutes ago that I actually enjoy your company. You don't act snobby or like you don't want to be around so I figured hey, why not ask Paige out to a movie. Going by yourself is not all that entertaining. I always end up falling asleep."
Austin took a drink from his cup. "So what do you say Paige? Maybe this weekend when you're not working, we could go to a movie?"

Paige didn't answer right away. Instead, she reached across the table and picked a cheese fry from the platter. Bringing it to her lips, she smiled slightly as she ate it in a slow, deliberate manner.
"Why, Mr. Hancock," she said primly, "are you asking me out on a date?"
Her lips spread into a sly smile, and she pretended to think about this for a moment. She actually hadn't been asked out many times. Most of the time, the closest she got to being asked out was "hey, baby, you wanna go somewhere?" It was sort of sweet to actually be asked on a date. It made her realize that she'd been hanging around the wrong kinds of guys before.
"I'd love to go to the movies with you."

He didn't really expect her answer right away. She didn't seem the type that would immediately give an answer and Austin was a patient guy.
While she ate a cheese fry, he took another bite of his burger resulting in ketchup and chili dripping out the other end. Since he was out in public with someone, Austin didn't waste any time wiping his face. He remembered all the times his mother continuously told him to make sure he wiped any food from his face, especially if he was out in public.
At her question, a smile spread on his face once he swallowed. "I do believe I am Ms. Owen."
He brought a fry to his mouth, just as she gave him her response. "Great," Austin replied hiding some of the excitement he felt just so it wouldn't seem that he was a pubescent teenager who just got his first date.
"We could even grab a quick bite if you wanted."

Paige smiled. "Uh huh, that's what I thought. You want to stuff me full of food. Dinner and a movie... You'll probably get the jumbo size of popcorn with extra butter, right? Oh, and those little chocolate candies with the white things on top.... Sno-Caps. I confess I have a weakness for those, too... but then, what girl doesn't have a weakness for chocolate, right?"
She laughed. "Well, anyway, it sounds like fun. When would we go on this alleged date, anyway? I mean, I need to see if I'm free."
