"Chess hm?" Garrett wouldn't have thought that she would have been one to play chess. "Chess is alright. We play it from time to time in the common room." He noticed that she acted proud, and he thought that everyone had to have something to be proud of.
"Classes? Well, I like herbology, potions, and transfiguration. The other classes are alright too, although I can't say that I really have a most favorite one." He gave a shrug. Garrett did fairly well in all his classes but he wasn't going to rub it in her face that he did do well.

Cadence really couldn't care less about classes. She barely paid attention to most of them, of course. She liked to get smart boys to "help" her with her homework. Unfortunately, none of the classes that he said he was good at were classes that she was taking. No wonder she had never met him before. She mostly took "easy" classes.
"Well, I guess my best class is Charms," she said coolly. "Defense Against the Dark Arts is OK, too. How are you in that?"

"Charms is alright," he said nonchalantly. Garrett was the kind that really needed a challenge. Sure, Charms did present a challenge but he wasn't taking it this term. "I took it last term. As for Defense Against the Dark Arts, I'm fairly decent. I wouldn't say that I would be at the very top of the class, but I'm not at the very bottom either." He didn't really like to show off, even in sports. Garrett knew that he was decent, but he never paraded around the field like he was some big shot.

Hmm. Well, that was better than Cadence was generally able to do in Defense. She wasn't especially interested in that class. She would have been far more interested in taking an actual Dark Arts class. But she wisely chose not to mention that.
"Well, maybe we could study together sometime for Defense Against the Dark Arts," she suggested lightly.
Stepping around a spot where the snow had melted into a black, slushy mud, Cadence gave the boy another sideways glance. Another thought had occurred to her, and she began to smile slightly. "What year are you?" she asked.

Was she really asking him to study with her? Sure, it wasn't anything definate but it was still a possibility. The thought nearly made him blush in shyness. "Maybe," he said trying to keep his voice cool and even.
Garrett never really studied with anyone. He had helped a few of his house mates with their homework when they were in the same class, but never had he sat down with anyone else. That should be interesting. As she talked to him, he turned his head slightly to look at her. "Fourth," Garrett answered.

Cadence spotted just the faintest tint of pink on his cheeks. It was actually kind of cute. But she quickly pushed that thought out of her mind, refusing to dwell on it. She was now finding some uses for this boy.
"You're a fourth year? Me too!" she said excitedly. "I don't remember you from the Sorting ceremony, but then, the Slytherin table was kind of loud."
A new idea occurred to her, and she smiled slyly. "So, what do you think about the Tournament so far?"

Part of him thought that the only reason she hadn't noticed him was because the sorting hat didn't bellow out Slytherin when it was placed atop his head. Garrett, being the nice boy that he was, wasn't going to vocalize that thought.
"The Tournament? I think its alright," he said with a shrug. "I'm looking forward to seeing what the second task will be. Although right now, everyone is going crazy over the fact that the Ball is coming up." The girls in Hufflepuff were going nearly crazy and they were always talking excitedly about going. Garrett didn't see why they were getting so hyped up over a dance.

Cadence smiled. "Ah, yes. The dance."
Well, now they were getting down to the point. But Cadence hesitated for a moment. It seemd like she should be able to do better than a Hufflepuff for her date. But no one had asked her yet, and she was starting to get nervous. The only Slytherin boy her age that didn't have a date yet was Xavier Scotts, and although he would certainly be a good choice, he never seemed to give her the time of day.
And Garrett ws cute, at least. Even if he was just a Hufflepuff.
"So, are you going?"

Garrett was a naive boy, simply put. "Going to the dance?" He hadn't asked anyone to go but he was still debating if he really wanted to go or not. The chances of him going were falling more into 'I-don't-really-think-I'm-going' side.
"I don't know," he said shrugging. "I mean, my mum sent dress robes and everything but I'm not sure if I want to or not." How his mother heard about it, he wasn't even sure. Garrett wasn't going to really tell her about it, but she found out and sent him dress robes as soon as she could. At least the robes were new and not from back in the eighteen hundreds or anything like that.
"Are you going?"

Cadence had to smother the satisfied smile that tugged at her lips. Oh, this was all too perfect.
"Well," she said slowly, "I really, really want to. But I don't have a date. I had a dress all picked out... and it would just be too humiliating to go alone. I mean... I just don't know why no one has asked me yet... maybe I'm not pretty enough."
She turned her big blue eyes to him, managing to summon a few tears for added effect. Her bottom lip trembled, and she looked as if she were about to break down in sobs at any moment.
Inside, she was smiling. No boy could resist that. Especially when a single tear trickled down her cheek.

"Hey, hey, don't cry," Garrett said stopping. "You are pretty." He wasn't quite sure what he was supposed to do to make her not cry. When it came to this kind of thing, Garrett wasn't the best because he never really had a girl almost sobbing in front of him.
"Um, well, if you wanted, you could erm, go with me. That way your dress wouldn't just be on the hanger and my dress robes will get to be used." Garrett cleared his throat. "Cadence, would you like to go to the ball with me?" He thought that he should just ask more formally, than just suggesting that she go with him. After all, it was more proper to do it that way, wasn't it?

Cadence sniffled and looked up at him hopefully, wiping her eyes. "Really?" she said, as if she didn't already knew that she was pretty. "You really think I'm pretty? And... and you really want to go to the ball with me?"
Her face lit up and she took her hands in his. "Yes! Yes, I would love to go to the ball with you. You're so sweet, and such a gentleman..."

"Of, of course you're pretty," he said trying to find some kind of confidence in himself to put in his voice. "And sure, I'll go to the ball with you." Garrett put on a smile.
When her face lit up, Garrett's smile widened. "Great." His cheeks brightened at her compliments. "I wouldn't want you to be upset for not going to the dance. After all, I'm sure my mum would find out if I went or not anyway." He gave a light laugh.

Cadence wiped away the rest of her tears, smiling brightly at him. "That's so nice of you! We'll have such a nice time, I'm sure of it. I'm so glad I met you today... it must have been like fate or something!"
Impulsively, she leaned in and kissed him on the cheek. "Thank you... I can't wait until the dance!"
She gave a little jump, then abruptly turned and skipped away up toward the castle.

Maybe being so nice was going to end up hurting him one day, but at least today it got him a date to the dance. However, the ball was what worried him. He wasn't quite sure what to do on a date, even if it was just to a dance. It would be completely embarrassing if he had to ask his mother what he should do. Maybe he would just wing it. That would be alright, wouldn't it?
Garrett's smile was still on his face, but it fell whenever she kissed his cheek. He would have given a tomato a run for its money if someone was judging color. A light smile appeared involuntarily. Before he could get out 'me either', Cadence was already on her way back to the castle. He watched her as she continued to skip toward the castle with an almost dopey smile on his lips.
