Eric looked at both of his sons. It really was good to see them. He could see at a glance that they had both grown since he had last seen them, even though they were old enough that they should have stopped growing. There was also an air of maturity about both of them that had not been there before.
"Oh, you know me. I've just been working. I had to break a particularly nasty Celtic curse on an ancient temple... I finally finished it a couple of days ago. What about you? I heard about Hogsmeade."

Daniel was usually pretty interested in what his father did, although he liked being in the magical law enforcement better. "Just working," he replied. "We've just done the usual. Nothing too terribly special." Daniel gave a small shrug. "Yeah, Hogsmeade. That ended up pretty nasty. Although, one of the aurors did manage to catch a death eater, so maybe there might be some new information." He shook his head. "But never in my life have I ever seen as much chaos and terror as I did." Daniel could still sometimes hear the children's screams as they tried to get away. "And on top of that, I know that this is not going to be the only attack. It's just starting."
Daniel shook his head. It was usually Sean that talked about work, but sometimes Daniel could carry on about it too. "But now, we're just trying to help get things back in order."

Eric nodded. "I heard it was pretty bad," he said. "Those poor kids. But I understand that the Auror department did a pretty good job, and that it could have been a lot worse if not for them. I still can't believe you boys were there..."
He was very proud of both of his sons, but he wasn't good at saying so. But knowing what they must have faced that day made him want to take both boys in his arms and protect them. Instead, he gripped his wife's hand a little harder and stayed right where he was.

Sean was staring at his feet as he listened to Daniel talking about the attack. He too still heard screams... very specific screams, actually, of the brunette in his vision... visions that even his parents didn't know about. He found that brunette, later... she hadn't made it, and it ate at Sean. He just kept feeling like he should have saved her, like he was supposed to, or he wouldn't have seen her. It was his fault.
He sighed, mostly to himself.

Ellen squeezed Eric's hand back encouragingly. "I'm just glad you both are safe, and you did what you could to protect everyone else."
Her eyes met Daniel's and she gave him a very proud smile before she looked to Sean. Something was bothering him... it didn't take a mother to notice, either, but she chalked it up to that attack. The things they had probably seen, the death... it was something she wanted to protect her children from.
"We're very proud of you both," she said, speaking for herself and Eric.

Eric caught the look on Sean's face as well, but he wasn't quite sure what to say to the boy. Somehow, everything he said to his youngest seemed to come out wrong. Still, it troubled him to see Sean looking so lost.
"You boys must have seen some pretty terrible things," he said softly. "If... you want to talk about it, you know your mother and I are here for you."

Daniel could feel that something was wrong with Sean, he didn't even have to look at him. He knew what haunted Sean. They didn't get to the girl in his vision fast enough and that was more than likely what ate at him, but it also ate at Daniel, he was just a little better at hiding it.
"Thanks mum," Dan spoke up. "And thanks dad. We know that." He also knew that his father sometimes had a hard time being comforting towards them, but Daniel knew that he meant well.
"Mum, do you think that you could possibly make another apple pie sometime soon so I could take it back," Daniel asked attempting to change the mood a little bit.

Ellen smiled indulgently. "I think I'm done baking for a few days, Daniel. But I do have two pies wrapped up for you and Sean that I had planned on sending home with you. One cherry, one apple, just like you boys always request."
Ellen knew her sons and her husband well, and it was something she was proud of.

His face lit up whenever his mother already had a pie for him to take back home. "Thanks mum, you're the best," Daniel said grinning. Of course that pie wouldn't last more than a day or two at the most, but he would enjoy it for however long it lasted.
"Last time I attempted to make an apple pie, well, it didn't turn out nothing like it was supposed to," he admitted. There were a few things that Daniel could make, but his favorite wasn't one of them.

Sean laughed, remembering that little episode. He looked up at Daniel, silently thanking him for changing the subject.
"Is that what you were trying to make?" He asked, refferencing the pie. "I couldn't even tell. It was something of a disaster, if I remember well."
He smiled at their mother. "Even if he had succeeded, it still wouldn't have done justice to yours, mom." He smiled wider hie saw his mom smile in response.

"Yes, that was what I was trying to make. At least you could smell the apples," Daniel said a little defensively, yet there was laughter on his face. "Well at first you could, and then well, after that I couldn't tell you what it smelled like." He laughed then shook his head. "And it was a disaster. It just looked like a blob of goo."
He nodded his head, agreeing with Sean. "I do agree with that. Mine wouldn't have been near as good had I succeeded, but I think I'll give it another try and see how it turns out."

Ellen smiled and shook her head. "Well, don't get too good at making those pies, or I won't be useful anymore. You boys know there will always be a good pie waiting for you here... you just have to come visit for it."
She was sitting on the edge of the couch, her hand in Eric's, and smiling at the family together again. "Speaking of, are you boys going to have any or should I put you to work right away?"

"Oh, trust me, my pies would never be as good as yours," Daniel said honestly. He smiled at his mother.
"I suppose that you could at least put me to work right now. A pie is a good reward after I get some work done. After all, I wouldn't be any good after filling up on pie and then working." He laughed.

Eric gave his wife's hand a squeeze, then he stood up. "I think Daniel is right," he said. "We should start working first, then we can sit back and enjoy the pie afterwards. It's always nice to have something to look forward to. And besides, the pie will be just that much more festive when the decorating is done."
He winked at her and went over to the boxes that he had pulled out from the attic. "Do you want to start right in with the tree, or should we do the other decorating first?"

"I think we should do the lights first," Sean said. "We can get the cold, hard work out of the way early, that way," he suggested.
He thought that decorating inside would be more relaxed and a better way to spend time with their parents. Sean and Daniel lived and worked together; they saw each other every day. They didn't see their parents as often, and, at least for their mother's sake, he wanted to make the most of it.

"I agree with Sean," Daniel said. "And then we have a longer time to enjoy the inside warmth." He smiled. "And mum, I promise that you'll love the lights." Daniel was going to climb up on the roof and put the Christmas lights up the muggle way. As long as he had Sean and his parents on the ground to catch him if he fell, he was good. He was determined to hang up the lights right this year.
Daniel walked over to where his father was standing and picked up the box for the outside lights. "Sean, do you want to get me the ladder?"

Eric nodded. "OK, boys, that sounds good," he said. "I'll get the ladder out of the garage."
He appreciated that the boys liked to do their work the muggle way, the way their mother was used to. Most wizards were lazy and did things the easy way, but his boys had learned how to do things the hard way. They lived in an all-muggle neighborhood, so it was best not to use too much magic, anyway.
"Do you want to come out and watch, Ellen?" he asked, turning to his wife.

"Of course I'll come watch," Ellen said, nodding, her hand still in her husband's, though she let it go since he said he was going to get the ladder Daniel had asked for, though she looked at Sean to see if he would get it.
"And thank you, Dan... I know how much you hate hanging the lights the normal way. I still think you're a sweetheart for doing it for me."

Sean stood up. "I'll get the ladder, Dad," he said. Dan had asked him for it, and he was here to help. "I'll just meet you guys outside, all right?" He loved being home. Granted, he could only really handle it for a day or two, because he did like living away from his parents, but it was nice to see them and he loved making his mother happy.

"It's no problem mum," said Daniel carrying the box outside. He didn't really are for hanging lights the muggle way, but he would do it anyway. His mother prefered things being done the muggle way, so Daniel was going to make sure that he made her happy.
He smiled and carried to box outside. Daniel started to pull out the lights to get them untangled while he waited on Sean to return with the ladder.
