Riley shook her head. "Don't jump to that conclusion. How drunk was she? She might just... actually not remember you."
She didn't flirt a lot. In fact, there was no time in her life for a relationship, so she wasn't the best person to ask for advice. But she was still a girl, and she still understood certain things girls did.
"If she was acting interested at the club, and she told you where to find her, then she seems interested. And it sounds like the slick guy upset her."

Geoffrey thought about it for a few minutes. "She didn't seem drunk. But she was a little bit more... open.... than she probably would normally have been. I think she's usually pretty quiet, but she wasn't quiet that night. Do you think... maybe she was embarrassed about the way she was acting? I don't think she did anything wrong, but maybe she said something she wished she hadn't said."
It helped to have a female friend he could ask about these kinds of things. There were times when he had thought about asking Riley out, but he liked the way things were. He didn't want to mess up their friendship, in case things didn't work out between them.

Riley would have been honestly surprised if she knew Geoff had ever entertained the idea of asking her out. In reality, she had a small handful of guys that were all genuinely interested, and she was blind to most of them.
"She may have been embarrassed, but even then... I don't think she would have pretended not to know you. That's a little extreme. I keep thinking there was someone there... maybe a crazy ex? Anyway, I would try one more time to see her. If she acts the same way, then she's propbably not interested. But you'll never know unless you give it another shot."

Geoffrey thought this over. "Yeah... I guess you're right," he said. "I really should try to talk to her again. I just... when she was acting like she didn't know me, I got kind of shy, you know? I felt really stupid. But I really liked her the night we met. She even agreed to come see one of our quidditch games. I can't even get you to come to those."
This last past was said with a little grin. "But seriously, Ri, I do hope everything is going OK with you. Other than being forced to work with my cousin, what else is going on with you? Have you met anyone?"

"I would come to your games if they weren't always when I was working," Riley defended. "You should really schedule those better," she teased. "I don't know. It sounds like something really strange was going on. Give it another shot, and then you can decide from there what's going on."
She sighed when the conversation inevitably turned to her, and turned a sweet smile on Geoff. "I have you, Geoff. Why would I ever need to meet somebody?" Her evening with Fabian did come to mind, but she wasn't sure that qualified.

Geoffrey shrugged. "You're a great girl, Ri," he said. "I wouldn't want to be selfish and keep you all to myself. Sooner or later, some guy is going to come around and make you forget all about me. And I'll miss you.... but you know I just want you to be happy."
He knew Riley could be unpredictable at times, but he firmly believed that there was someone out there who would be perfect for her. And as much as he liked Riley, he knew deep down that he wasn't the one for her. She needed someone who would love her deeply and who could handle the fiery side of her personality. Geoffrey was an easygoing guywho simply took things as they came.
"Anyway, you're right. I'll try and see if I can get her alone this time and I'll talk to her again."

"You know I'll never forget you, Geoff," Riley said, giving him a look. She adored Geoffrey. He kept her sane most of the time, and she really hoped that this girl he was interested in wouldn't blow him off again. He didn't deserve that, and she didn't know what the girl's problem was, but hopefully it was a one time thing.
"I had a guy over for wine the other night," Riley said, almost nonchalantly.

At this bit of information, Geoffrey raised his eyebrows at her. "Oh, really?" he said. "You've been holding out on me, Ri. Why wasn't that the first thing you told me?"
Riley didn't date very often, so this little bit of information was definitely a surprise for Geoffrey. But he was glad to hear it. He always thought Riley spent far too much time working and not enough time enjoying herself.
"So, come on. Out with it. Do I know him? Who was it? And how did it go?"

Riley ran a hand through her hair, blushing slightly. "The interrogation is exactly why it wasn't the first thing I told you," she teased him, but in the end, she gave in and shrugged.
"It's Fabian Prewett... he works in the Ministry, as an auror. You might know him. It did go well, actually. It was fun. And anyway, it isn't anything serious. The whole thing is just very casual and we're more... friends than anything. But I'm okay with that."

Geoffrey laughed. "Yeah... I know. But, hey, what's a best friend for if not to interrogate you mercilessly on your love life? I mean, it's not like I can do any of the girly best friend things, so you gotta give me this one."
He listened with interest as she talked about Fabian Prewett. Of course he knew a little about the Prewetts. They were both well known in the Ministry. "That's great, Ri. From what I understand, Fabian Prewett is a really good guy. I've never heard anyone say anything bad about him. I hope things go well with you two."

Riley grinned. "I don't know, Geoffrey, I could see you letting me paint your fingernails and curl your hair." Actually, the fact that he didn't really do any of the 'girl best friend' things was exactly why she loved him. Riley was just one of those girls who couldn't handle other girls, with rare exceptions. There was too much gossip, too much giggling, too much estrogen, and it irritated her rather quickly.
She nodded, agreeing with his perception of Fabian. "He is really nice... and he's a complete sweetheart. I feel comfortable with him, you know?"

Geoffrey appeared to think this over. "Well... OK. I'll let you curl my hair, but I draw the line at the manicure, thanks." Laughing, he pretended to be fluffing his hair playfully while prancing around in an over-exaggerated walk. "Heh... maybe not."
He sobered up quickly as she talked about Fabian. She really seemed to like him a lot, and he couldn't help but smile. Riley was a great girl, and he really wanted someone else to realize it. Fabian was not all that different from himself, actually.
"Good. I'm happy for you, Riley. I hope it goes well for you."

"I don't know, Geoff. You could look good with curly hair... and blonde and curly tends to get a lot of definition." She reached up and ran her fingers through his hair, pretending to consider it, then made a face and shrugged. "I'll just paint your nails n your sleep one night," she threatened.
She didn't react much to him wishing her well with it. "We'll see. I'm okay with us just being friends for now. So you have Alison, and I have Fabian, and surely there must be something else we can talk about. How's your sister?"

Geoffrey shook his head and held up his hands. "OK, you are not staying over night at my place," he teased. "By the time you were done with me, I'd probably look prettier than you!"
At the mention of Christine, he frowned. "Oh, she's OK. Angry and rebellious... and not at all happy to be home. But I do think she's getting closer to our cousin Samantha... They're really close in age, and I think they're good for each other. I'm actually going to take Christine to the Yule Ball in a couple of weeks. She doesn't want to try to find a date."
