Nathalia had a muggle duffle bag slung over her shoulder and a pretty smile on her lips.
She was a girl any father should have been proud of, and equally terrified of. Granted, hers hadn't even bothered to show up when she was born, and she had come to terms with that over the years. Now, she was glad for it. Who knew how things would have turned out had he stuck around?
Besides, there was a certain kind of appeal to being the only daughter of a single mother... a lesbian one at that, but very few people knew that last bit, but she imagined there were a few who suspected.
She was the child of high society that got away with anything, more than her Burke and Scotts cousins, and she always kind of reveled in that too.
But what she loved most was the relationship she had with her mother. She knew, had her father been around, she would have grown up as a complete daddy's girl, so it was thanks to him that she could have the childhood she did.
She stood now in the hallway on the third floor, staring at her mother's door. Did she knock or just walk in? She'd been away in New York for so long that she didn't even know.
Finally, deciding she might be interrupting something, she knocked.

Housekeeping had never been one of Ursula's specialties. In fact, she was often downright messy. For this reason, she employed a single house elf to keep her tiny apartment clean, especially when she was away on business trips. Taffy was the perfect house elf; she always did her work promptly and without being asked and didn't seem to slack off while Ursula was away. Right now, Ursula was sitting on the couch, watching as Taffy meticulously cleaned the floor. Just because she didn't like to work, didn't mean that she didn't enoy watching others do it.
When she heard the knock on the door, Taffy jumped up and was about to go to the door, but Ursula stopped her. "No, don't bother, Taffy, I'll get it," she said.
She stood up, stretching her long legs a moment before walking to the door. OPening it, a smile spread across her face. "Natty!" she greeted her daughter. "Are you a sight for sore eyes! Come in, baby, what's going on?"

Lia smiled and came inside, dropped her bag by the door, and hugged her mother.
"Hi Mum," she said, pulling back. If there was one thing she could always count on, it was a warm greeting from her mum. "You look fantastic. Is there a girl I should know about?" She asked, her eyes narrowing playfully.
She moved inside enough to close the door, and looked around, waving to Taffy. "So... I'm back in town." Laughing, she added, "I thought you'd want to know."

Ursula laughed. The best thing about her relationship with her daughter was the fact that they were both so open and honest with each other. Of course, Lia didn't know about her work as a Death Eater, but this was a minor technicality, as far as Ursula was concerned. There were some things that she was better off not knowing about. But at least they could talk about relationships openly.
"No, I'm single at the moment. I had an ugly breakup a few months ago, so I've been on the mend ever since. It's good to just focus on me, you know? I actually just got back to town myself... I've been away on business for the last few weeks. But come sit down and tell me how you've been doing? Taffy will make us some tea," she said, nodding to the little elf.
Taffy scurried off to make tea, and Ursula led her daughter over to the sofa. "So, spill. Anyone special in your life?"

Nathalia shrugged as she sat back easily and casually on the sofa. She had her legs crossed in a way that said she was comfortable with her body and wouln't spend any thought on what she did with it.
"I, also, just went through a particularly nasty break up. So I'm happy being single." She went on dates, but she wasn't dating, and she liked it that way. She was at a stage in her life where she was still trying to figure things out for herself, forget throwing another person in the equation.
"I've just been... you know. Being a young woman in New York. How was the job?" She asked, before letting her mother dwell on just how young women were in New York.

Ursula patted her daughter's hand. "Oh, sweetie, I'm so sorry about the breakup. It's never fun, is it? Well, in case you're wondering, it's not any easier when you're dating women. The problems are different, but they're just as tough. And the breakups hurt just as much. But I know you're strong... you're going to be fine. So, what does a young girl in New York do, anyway?"

"Oh, it's fine. He was getting too clingy anyway. Relationships are just hardly worth it, nine times out of ten." She nudged her mother. "Were you the heartbreaker or the heartbreakee?"
She smiled coyly at her mother's next question. "Oh, you know. Sex, drugs, and rock and roll."

Ursula sighed. "A little of both, I'm afraid," she said. "We were just too much alike... we fought all the time... it was a very volatile relationship. Finally I just decided that we'd better break up before we killed each other. So I walked out. It hurt for a while, though. When things were good between us, they were very good." She smiled mysteriously and wiggled her eyebrows.
At Lia's evasive explanation of life in New York, Ursula laughed and patted her shoulder. "That's my girl. I hope you gave 'em hell. So, seriously, how long are you in town? You planning to stay for a while? I'm sure Taffy wouldn't mind fixing up the spare room for you."

"If you wouldn't mind," Lia said, nodding. "I've missed the comforts of home, and I'd like to stay a while."
Just after saying this, she went back to talking about relationships, though. "Well, of course they were good. With that much passion... how could they not be? I've always found that things were... spicier... in volatile relationships. Still, in the end, they never work out, do they?"

"I don't mind at all," Ursula replied. "I've missed having you around. Of course, if I meet someone, I may have to toss you out on your rear, but you understand." She laughed at this. "Yes, I do agree... the volatile relationships are definitely more fun, while they last. Unfortunately, the pain is even worse, because you're always thinking about how good it used to be."
Taffy came in with a tray just then, and set it down on the table top in front of them. There was a small tea kettle, two cups, and plenty of cream and sugar artfully arranged on the tray, along with a platter of tea cakes.
"Thank you, Taffy," she said to the house elf. "I'll tell you, if only Taffy were a woman, instead of an elf... she'd be my perfect mate."

Lia laughed. "Well, if I ever had any doubt about whether you were the dominant one or not, I don't anymore."
She uncrossed her legs and sat forward to take a cup of tea. It had been such a long time since she had seen her mother, or any of the rest of her family, come to that, but it didn't feel like such a long time.
"Jadon spent a couple weeks with me," she said, making small talk.

Ursula laughed. "Oh, you better believe it, kiddo," she teased.
She took the other cup of tea from the tray and added a bit of cream, using an enchanted spoon to stir it. Taking a sip, she glanced over at Nathalia curiously. "Oh, really? Jadon stayed with you in New York? What was he up to? Or didn't he tell you? That boy's always up to something."

Lia shrugged. "He didn't tell me anything, as usual. He's a trouble maker and never includes me in any of it," she laughed.
Of course, she didn't know that Jadon, as well as her mother, were both keeping their Death Eater activities from her. She probably would have balked had she known how much they were trying to protect her.
"I also ran into Zach and Derek the other night... did you know they were back in town?"

Ursula had, of course, seen Derek at the Death Eater meeting. But Zach... now that was a surprise. As far as she knew, no one had heard from him in almost a year. "Zach?" she repeated. "You mean Zach Scotts? Merlin's beard... I thought he was dead! No one's heard from him in ages. What's he doing back in town? Does Thatcher know?"

Nathalia laughed. "I don't know, Mum. I didn't grill him or anything. Thatcher's like a hawk though... I imagine he'd know the second Zach came back. I haven't seen him since I was fifteen. He hasn't changed at all."
She pulled her legs up under her in indian style on the sofa. "So fill me in on everything that's happened. I'm sure I've missed a lot."

Ursula laughed. "Yeah, nothing gets by Thatcher for long," she agreed. "So Zach still looks the same, huh? Interesting... He's sexy enough to turn a gay girl straight." She wiggled her eyebrows at Nathalia, then burst out laughing. "Too bad he's related to me. And, you know, not a woman. Interesting, though. Wonder what the hell he's been up to all this time? And what brought him back?"
Taking a bite of one of the tea cakes, she smiled at Nathalia. "Oh, nothing really new around here. Except it sounds like a lot of people are coming back to town after being away. You, Derek, Zach... it's like we're gearing up for a full-scale family reunion..."

"And doesn't that sound like a blast?" Nathalia said, raising her eyebrows. She loved her family dearly, all of them, but she got tired of the crap they gave her constantly, always asking if she had a respectable boyfriend yet, or if she'd finally gotten her life together and stopped prancing around the States or wherever else she felt like going.
"It is strange that we all came back to town at nearly the same time," she said. She and Zach were the only coincidences. Derek and Jadon were both Death Eaters, but Nat didn't know that.

Ursula laughed. Family events were just as painful for her, since her nontraditional lifestyle tended to bring about some rather awkward dinner conversations. But she did adore her family, even when they were driving her crazy. "Yeah, I'm sure that would be a lot of fun... let's hope no one gets any brilliant ideas to have a family reunion. No one needs one of those."
She shrugged. "Maybe it's just the time of year," she said. "The holidays are just around the corner, so maybe a few people are home for that. Still... Zachary Scotts has been gone for, what? Three years now? Very interesting indeed."

Nat shrugged. "Yeah, I don't know why he's back. He said it was something about being bored, his travels in the states being over... I don't know. It just seems to me that when you're in one place for that long, there's a real reason why you leave."
She could be purely speculationg, and she shrugged. "But you know either Thatcher or Benjamin is going to propose the reunion... it happens every time. Can we just pretend we didn't get the invite?"

Ursula laughed. "I think we'll have to be busy that day," she said with a wink. "I'm sure we can come up with something else we could be doing that day... maybe a weekend in Paris, just for the hell of it? Especially if Emma's family is there... there are very few people that intimidate me, but Emma's sister Druella is one of them."
