Gabriel knew that there was a new head auror, but he hadn't been able to make it to meet her yet. He had been away on a mission. It involved erasing a few memories and getting things set right. Of course it was hard work because he didn't want to erase the most important memories in the people's memories.
After he returned from his mission, Gabriel went back to his office only to find paperwork. Of course there was always something to do. He also found a note on his desk saying that he was supposed to meet with the new head auror today. Of course, he was still slightly tired from his trip and it was apparent. His hair started growing longer than he usually kept it, but a change was alright.
Sighing, he left his office before he could really get settled to meet this woman. Of course, he hoped that he would just have to say a few words and the meeting would be over with. It wasn't that he was going to dislike her or anything, it was just that Gabriel was not much of a talker.
He walked to her office and knocked gently on her door.

So far, Angelique's tenure as Head Auror had hardly been a picnic. First a ridiculous scandal involving a breakup between two of her Aurors, now the shocking and unsolved death of a Hogwarts student while on school grounds. Already she was being flooded with angry letters, calling for her resignation. She could only imagine what kind of mail Vincent was getting.
Irritated, she crumpled another scathing letter and levitated it into the trash bin. "That does it," she said aloud to no one in particular. "I'm hiring someone to intercept this mail. How am I supposed to get my work done?"
She sighed and shoved all of the letters off of her desk and onto the floor. She had more important things to be doing. She had just picked up a report from Andromeda Black about the situation at Hogwarts when she heard a knock on the door. Annoyed, she let out a curse under her breath. "Come in!" she called.

He could hear her talking to someone or something in her office. Maybe today wasn't that great of a day to meet with her, although Gabriel wasn't going to turn down an invitation to meet someone. He didn't care to much about meeting new people, but he wasn't the kind to turn them down. Gabriel took in a deep breath as he noticed that her voice sounded annoyed.
Straightening his jacket, Gabriel twisted the door knob and polietly entered her office. "Afternoon Ms. St. Claire," he said in greeting, keeping it short. He wasn't one for many words. "You wanted to meet with me?"

Angelique looked up at the man who had entered her office. He was unfamiliar to her, and she couldn't think why she would have asked to meet with someone she didn't know. "Maybe I did," she said, staring blankly at him. "So who are you?"

He walked in and then shut the door quietly behind him. She had forgotten that she was supposed to be meeting with him? Maybe she had just gotten busy? "Gabriel Lowery, Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes," he said trying to not say anymore than he needed to say.

"Oh. Right, of course," Angelique said, remembering the memo she had sent to the head of the Department for the Reversal of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes. "Please sit down, Mr. Lowery. I asked you to come and speak to me, because I understand that there's been an increase of mass "accidents" involving muggles that you have had to step in and deal with, and I'm wondering what kind of investigation is being done in these matters. I have reason to believe that they are not accidents at all, but perhaps tied to the followers of Lord Voldemort."

Politely, Gabriel took a seat in front of her desk. "We're still trying to figure that out. Most people we fixed seemed to have just seen masks. There were no faces shown," he said getting to the point. He never believed in talking all the way around something before getting to the point. It wasted a lot of breath. "We try to see if we can see into the memories and attempt to find out what they saw before we pull out the memory and insert another one so they won't remember a thing. We're still not quite sure who it is because there is no evidence as to who is behind it, other than the attackers wear masks."
Gabriel thought about Voldemort. It could be a chance that it was, but they did not have enough proof. "I assure you Ms. St. Clare we are working hard to figure this out. I won't rest until I figure it out."

Angelique nodded. "That sounds like it is probably the work of the Death Eaters. I understand they have taken to wearing masks while on missions, so as not to be recognized. Pretty damn cowardly, if you ask me. I mean, really? Masks? We had crazy mask-wearing people in America, they called themselves the KKK. They were usually muggles, though. But anyway, that does fit the pattern as we've observed it in recent missions. I'm afraid they are getting more organized in their ranks, and more focused in their attacks, and the masks are just part of it. Did you hear about the Confunded clocks case recently? Where all the muggle clocks in London were running backwards?"

Gabriel nodded. "I've heard about it, yes. We where just in London for a few hours, but I did notice a few, but not all. Of course they were fixed. There were a few in Germany running backwards as well." He didn't see why the 'bad guys' ran around with masks on while the good guys didn't. It was crazy.
"We might have to be heading back out soon if things keep up. At least it hasn't started in America yet," he added.

Angelique nodded. "OK, good. Well, keep an eye on the situation, please. The next time you get a call for any kind of mass incident affecting muggles, I want you to contact me immediately. I would like to accompany you to the site and do some of my own investigating, if that's OK with you. I think our departments are going to need to work together on this issue, if we're going to trace the sources of these attacks and prevent future ones from happening."

Great. The two departments where going to work together. It wasn't that Gabriel didn't like aurors, it was the fact that Angelique was probably going to speak a lot, and that would be where she would be wrong. He believed in less talk, more work.
He nodded. "I'll be sure to let you know." Gabriel surveyed Angelique for a moment. She seemed the kind that would talk for awhile. What had he just gotten himself into? "And that's fine."

Angelique studied him for a minute. She couldn't help noticing that he was good-looking, but reserved. He seemed to be a man of few words, which annoyed her a little. She wanted more detail, some sort of opinion about the case. He was working on it; surely he had some thoughts?
She also couldn't help but notice that he seemed reluctant at the idea of working closely with her on the case. This annoyed her even more. "Well, you don't have to sound so excited about it," she said in a lofty tone. "We are all going to have to learn to work together on this, you know. I understand we may also have to include the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Department."

"I'm sorry Ms. St. Claire, but I find it hard to be excited to know that there are evil things happening and I don't know exactly who is behind it and how they can be stopped," said Gabriel with a slight matter-of-fact tone. He studied her for another moment. "I don't mind working with you or anyone else for that matter."
Gabriel crossed his arms over his chest. "I'll get the information about this last time to you."

Angelique frowned. He was trying to be professional, but he was clearly as annoyed by her as she was by him. She knew she could be abrasive at times, and she was in a fairly bad mood, thanks to all the nasty letters. But she shouldn't take that out on him, even if he was annoyingly closed-mouthed.
"OK, then," she said. "I'll look for the information, and be sure to let me know the instant something else comes up. If you're lucky, this will be the end of it, but I have a bad feeling it's only the beginning. Unfortunately, there is evil out there, and we're all going to have to work together if we're going to stop it."

He was slightly annoyed with her. Maybe she was just having a bad day. Maybe she wasn't like this all the time. Gabriel focused on the conversation. "I know that this is not the end. There is only more to come. We can only hope to stop it before more people start showing up in the morgues. Five muggles died. Five. We didn't get there in time to prevent it, and it's not going to stop." The look in Gabriel's eyes seemed slightly distant. "I'll be sure to get the information to you before the end of the day."

She wondered if he was always like this. He was being short with her, or was that just how he was? "What exactly happened?" she asked. "Do you know if the muggles were murdered or if something happened that caused their deaths accidentally? It's one thing to make a few clocks run backwards, but if these people are doing things to cause deaths, or even murdering them outright, that is a very serious situation. It's bad enough I have little girls being murdered right on the grunds of Hogwarts. But if the bodies start piling up, we could have an actual war on our hands."

Angelique wanted full explantations, and Gabriel preferred the ones that were short and to the point. "We showed up, and there were two muggles dead. Man and woman. There was no blood and it seemed like it was from the Unforgivable. The neighbors saw, and we took their memories. People in masks, that's all we had. We fixed their memory. Same case happened when we moved on. Three more dead, same situation." This had angered Gabriel. What was the purpose of killing muggles? They didn't do anything to anyone.
"War is probably what we're heading for unless we can stop it first."

Angelique sighed. The situation was worse than she thought. "So it was murder, then," she commented. It wasn't a question. "OK, I definitely need that information as soon as you can get it to me. And later, if you're not busy, I'd like you to take me to the scene. I'm going to make this case my priority, since I have most of my other aurors already stationed at Hogwarts. If muggles are being murdered, I'm going to need to give a full report to Vincent, and he's probably going to have to speak to the muggle Prime Minister. This is the kind of thing that could cause a real panic."

"I can have that information ready in about half an hour," said Gabriel. He knew that the information would need to be formal in order to turn in and that was the only thing he had to do. "I can take you there. We searched everywhere, but nothing was destroyed. Maybe you'll see something we missed." He knew that this could start a panic, and that was something he didn't want to happen. People panicing made things a lot harder than they should be.
"I'll come back to your office in about half an hour. Will you be ready today, or tomorrow?"

"Excellent," Angelique said. "I can go today; I have nothing else on my schedule except these damned angry letters. I swear, I haven't even been in office long enough to have people hating me, but they still find a reason. We have to find someone to to blame for something, and soon, or the whole Ministry is in trouble! If we could capture just one person, it would at least prove we're doing something and aren't just a bunch of incompetent fools!"
