Eve treked to the sixth year's dorms and knocked on the door waiting for someone to answer. She wanted to talk to Genevieve about the twins and ask at least how she felt about their arrangements for the dance. She hadn't talked to the girl hardly at all lately and while she envied Genevieve and part of her would always silently resent that the girl had managed to take her place if only just a little, the truth was she looked up to the girl both as a friend and as a sister. Genevieve was really Eve's only female friend, then again the boys were her only male friends, but whenever there was something femalish she needed to discuss she always went to Viv.

Genevieve had started out doing her homework; she really had. But her hair had been hanging in her face, making it hard to concentrate. And since her concentration levels were never great from the start, she soon got distracted and had gone about trying to fix her hair. She was looking in the mirror, brushing her long blonde hair, when she heard the tentative knock at the door.
"Come in!" she called brightly, still brushing her hair.

Eve stepped inside and really wasn't surprised to see Viv brushing her hair nor was she surprised by the jealousy that coursed through her veins for the tiniest of moments. Merlin she was just so pretty.

Genevieve glanced up and saw Eve walking into the room. "Hi, Eve!" she said brightly, setting down her brush and turning to face her friend. She was not aware that Eve was jealous of her in any way, but she often felt a distance between her and Eve that she couldn't quite understand. Because of this, she always went out of her way to be nice to Eve, and to let her know that she was her friend, just as much as Lance and Josh.
"What's up?" she asked, tilting her head to one side.

Eve shrugged, "Not much." she answered going and testing out Viv's bed by sitting, her eyes lowered she asked, " Are you excited...about the ball?"
Her foot shuffled she was a little nervous and she hoped that Viv didn't mind her sitting on her bed, she didn't think the girl would but she probably shouldn'tve sat down without permission

Genevieve smiled and moved over to the bed to sit next to Eve. "I can't wait for the dance!" she said excitedly. "I love getting all dressed up, and Lance is going to look so cute... He's been so sweet lately, too. But, oh! You are going to look so pretty... Will you let me do your hair and makeup?"

"Actually." Eve said a little relieved, " I was hoping you might...that is...I don't know the first thing about...well any of that stuff and Josh is going to look so...and I don't want to disappoint him..." she said nervously. She was really hoping that Viv really did want to go with Lance and wasn't instead wanting to go with Josh. Lord knew the girl would dazzle both guys anyway.

Genevieve beamed at her. "No, of course I don't mind! I'm really good at it, actually... You wouldn't believe how much makeup I have to put on just to make myself presentable in the morning! But believe me, you couldn't possibly disappoint Josh. He's crazy about you, don't you see it? And you have such pretty eyes and a beautiful smile... all we need to do is accentuate it a little bit! You know, I should offer up my services to other girls for the dance, don't you think? Like that Ravenclaw girl... Hallie? I bet she has no idea how pretty she really is, she's so busy hiding it under the thick hair and glasses..."

Eve nodded wondering if she could really be as glamorous as Viv was saying. She really hoped so she wanted Josh to be happy. When Viv talked about Josh and her she didn't really believe it but she was content to listen to it. "Thank you Viv..."

Genevieve smiled happily. "Don't even mention it, Eve! I want to do it. Really... you're going to look so pretty. You already are pretty... I just wish you knew that. Josh will just be blown away by you. Between the two of us, Lance and Josh are going to be the envy of everyone else in the dance, because they got to go with us."

Eve smiled at the girl's confidence. She hoped that she looked alright and wasn't expecting too much but Eve could have her hopes raised by Viv, and did slightly.
"I'm sure that's exactly how it will be." she indulged.

Genevieve smiled. "Of course it will. And Josh and Lance are both so cute, too... we'll probably have all the girls hating us, too." She giggled excitedly. "Listen, I've been meaning to talk to you about something, actually. About Lance. Do you think it's possible that maybe... he could be in love with me? He's been different lately... but he hasn't said anything specifically."

Eve blinked when she was confronted with that question. What did she say? "Uh.." she sputtered, "I...um.." she looked towards the door as it was a safety point but of course she couldn't just cowardly get up and leave instead she shook her head, "I don't know...it's very possible. Lance...he wouldn't keep you guessing though...I think...I mean...it looks like he obviously likes you a lot...and maybe...yes." she said stuttering through.

Genevieve took her friend's hands and squeezed them lightly. "I'm so happy... I've liked Lance the best since... well, since forever, really! And I can tell that Josh is crazy for you. Just think.. maybe one day, we could be sisters! Wouldn't that be wonderful?"

Eve's eyes practically buldged out of their sockets at Viv's last comment. Sisters would imply that Viv would marry Lance and Eve would marry Josh...that would be...so very...very...suddenly Eve's eyes went soft...it would be so very wonderful, to be able to be with her best friend for the rest of her life...Merlin that was a dream.
Then she heard what Viv really said, "So...you and Lance...I mean.. you really love him?" she asked.

Genevieve bobbed her head excitedly. "Yes, I do. I always have, I think. Josh is great, but from the beginning, me and Lance... we just clicked, you know? I just always knew it. And I'm so glad that Josh is finally realizing how great you really are. Guys take a while sometimes, but you should see the way he looks at you when he thinks you're not looking..."

Eve finally allowed herself a small smile, " It's sweet of you to say that Viv...I ...I love Josh really...but.." she shook her head, " He deserves someone much better than me." she said humbly she was blushing from her roots that Viv would talk about Josh liking her, it really would be amazing to her since she didn't place much stock in herself. "But I do see what you're talking about with Lance...he really, he really does like you I can tell in his smile."

Genevieve was horrified by Eve's comment. Her mouth dropped open and she looked at Eve sadly. "Oh, Eve... you mustn't talk like that. You shouldn't even think like that! How could he possibly do better than you... don't you see how incredible you are? You're sweet and smart... much smarter than I'll ever be. And you're pretty. You shouldn't put yourself down, Eve, you're worth a lot."

She nodded and listened to her "qualities" being spelled out, she thought about just nodding and agreeing to save the argument but maybe, maybe she needed to tell someone how hopeless it was between her and Josh, maybe she needed the boost of confidence that someone else could tell her why she was actually worth someone like Josh.
It wasn't really Eve's confidence she would have thought she was pretty maybe had her mother survived and her father not have to turn away every time he saw her. She never realized it was because she reminded him of his dead wife. Eve reminded him so much of his dead wife that he couldn't be around her, couldn't accept the things she did and almost couldn't accept her no matter that he loved her deep inside...if he was capable of loving anymore.
She thought it was her, she thought she wasn't pretty enough, her grades weren't good enough, she wasn't doing enough, her cooking wasn't good enough, nothing was as good as her mother had done before her.
But all these thoughts instead of releasing them into the air Eve was choking on the memories and she began to sniffle, "He's just so wonderful...and...he would deserve someone...someone like my mom...and I'll never be...I'll never be as good as she was."

"Oh, Eve..." Genevieve said soothingly. She put her arms around her friend, comforting her. "You can't think like that. Never compare yourself to anyone else... you're always only going to see the good parts of that person and the bad parts of yourself. Even your mum... I'm sure she was wonderful and perfect, but she loved you very much. And if she was here, she wouldn't want to hear you putting yourself down and doubting yourself. Believe in yourself, Eve... You deserve great things. You deserve Josh. And I know you don't see it, but it's obvious to me that he's crazy about you."
