His assignments as of late were rather skimpy and if he were a smarter man Logan might have thought something were up. But he paid no attention to the fact that he was losing favor with the Dark Lord and instead focused his free time and energy on target practice with his knives. Before, he had loads of time to devote to knife throwing, but once that new crop of Death Eaters showed up, Bellatrix and her gang, Logan had spent more time around Headquarters trying to eavesdrop. He gathered Lucius Malfoy was one of the more prominent followers and Rodolphus Lestrange was not far behind. Bellatrix Black, Trixie as he liked to call her, was oddly enough being cast aside. Logan took great pleasure in watching her face fall at the meetings when the Dark Lord would snap at her or dismiss her achievements. Logan now stood in the middle of Knockturn Alley, his floating targets some twenty feet away from him, and he threw a knife furiously at it. It hit the target, but was off to the left of the bullseye.

Agustus generally steered clear of Knockturn Alley. He tried to appear as clean cut ans respectable as possible, and he knew that if there weren't spies among their own ranks, the Aurors had ways of watching.
But duty had called, so he found himself walking down shady alleyways and generally avoiding anyone. The hood of his cloak was drawn up, casting his face in shadow so that he could not be recognized. Around here, anyway, he blended in.
Strangely, so did the figure throwing knives, whom Augustus recognized immidiately.
"Something bothering you, Van Helsing?" He asked, coming up behind the man, his voice deep and throaty.

"It's those damned kids," Logan replied, completely unaware of the fact that he sounded very similar to the criminals in the muggle cartoon, Scooby Doo. "Malfoy, and Lestrange, and Black. Especially Black." He threw another knife at the target and this time it curved to the right. He had over corrected, something that never happened before his 'kid problems' started. "Have your missions been cut back too?"

Augustus smiled like a cat who had just discovered prey.
"Why... no," he said, cocking his head to the side. "In fact... I've noticed I've been getting an extra mission or two."
He paused, watching the man, letting him stew on tha bit of information for a bit. "What exactly do the newer recruits have to do with this, again?"

Logan scowled. Why hadn't Augustus' missions been cut back as well? "It's because of them, you know. I don't get on with the Dark Lord's new pets and I'm sure they've told him to exclude me." That was it. Bellatrix had worked her magic on Lord Voldemort and now Logan was paying for it.

Now Augustus just rolled his eyes. "Oh, please."
How old were they? He felt like Van Helsing was telling him Bellatrix wouldn't share her toys in the sandbox. No wonder his missions were getting cut... he wouldn't want someone this immature on missions with him anyway.
"This is not some popularity contest, Van Helsing," he said. "Our dark lord chooses based on skill and the assets he needs for any given situation. Not on who likes who. I thought we both graduated Hogwarts already?"

"Well I was chosen before," he said angrily as he threw his last knife at the target, hitting it square in the center. He used his wand to summon the knives back into his hand, hilt first of course.
At this point Logan didn't seem able to grasp the idea that he was just not as useful as he once was. But he was half right, it did have to do with the new recruits. In the beginning there weren't many followers, and the Dark Lord had to take what he could get. But now that the cause was growing he could spare the hangers on. Apparently Logan was in that group, unbeknown to him.

"You sound like a teenaged girl, you know," Augustus said, amused by this more than anything else. He could offer to put in a good word for the man... but why would he ever do that?
"Have you considered asking why your missions have been cut?" Well, that may very well be a suicide mission, depending on the mood he caught Voldemort in. "I hear Malfoy's got a mission... you could prostitute yourself to go with him."

He did not sound like a teenage girl. And he wasn't quite dumb enough to just waltz up to Lord Voldemort and demand to know why he wasn't getting anything good lately. Besides, he knew why. Even if Augustus didn't believe him, Logan knew. "I believe that's Bellatrix's area of expertise," he said coldly.

Augustus laughed. That was a well placed remark, he thought, and while it was harsh... well. It may as well have been true.
"Point taken," Augustus said with a nod. "Care for a drink, rather than doing this all knight?"

Logan shrugged to show he didn't care, but accepted Augustus' offer anyway. He banished the floating targets back to his storage and pocketed his knives in their holsters. Perhaps a drink would make him forget about Bellatrix and her stupid friends. "Where to?"

Augustus was unimpressed with the knives, but said nothing and kept from rolling his eyes again.
"We don't exactly have a lot of choices, do we?" He asked, then nodded his head down the street. "The Rusty Nail is always open."
He was curious to see what he could get out of this man if he was drunk... was he the kind that talked easily?

"I don't suppose we do," he said in a gruff voice and strolled down the Alley toward the dingy old bar. His knives patted against his side as he walked, sulking almost, still thinking about his neglect from the Dark Lord.
They entered the pub, which had only four other occupants spread throughout the place. He made his way to the bar and asked Augustus, "What'll you have then?"

Augustus raised his eyebrows, quirking a half smile. "Are you buying?" he asked. He didn't wait for an answer before he turned to the bartender and asked for a gin and tonic.
"It must still be early," he said, glancing around the dingy bar. "Usually, this place is packed with others. Mostly vampires. I suppose I shouldn't complain. I enjoy my humanity."
He glanced at Logan, waiting for him to place and order.

Arachne sat near the back of the bar, fully hooded and cloaked. She had a drink in her hand but it stilled when she saw who walked in. What in the world was Mr. Rookwood doing here? She didn't say anything to show who she was, she didn't want to catch his attention. She'd been in the dark alley to get a few choice objects which were less than savory and had stopped for a drink before leaving, if he caught her there... she dreaded the thought of loosing her position at the ministry, but she couldn't help but listen only barely within range of the two men. What WAS he doing here? He had never seemed the type to show up in knockturn alley and it had caught her by surprise. She hated surprises.

He spoke to the bartender first, ordering a whiskey sour, and then turned back to Augustus. "The first round. Trying to keep my manners in place, you know. Apparently I'm not well liked." He laughed darkly, then took his drink and walked over to a table that seemed the cleanest in the place, which wasn't saying much.

Augustus did not notice his intern, and nodded, following Logan to the table.
"Well, I don't dislike you, if it helps." Augustus was not well known for liking people, so not disliking someone was about as good as it got from him.
"I'll buy the next round."

"Oh really? Well now I'm practically giddy. I have a fan club." He sneered into his drink before taking a large gulp. He looked miserable and didn't bother hiding it. Everyone was getting missions but him, no one liked him - though Augustus apparently didn't dislike him. Miserable.

Augustus sighed. "I think I will buy you the next drink, and then I'll be on my way."
No wonder he wasn't getting missions. He was a sniveling 12 year old who whined when he didn't gt his way, and Augustus didn't have the time or the patience to deal with him.
He tried to finish his drink quickly, hoping Van Helsing would do the same.

Logan was too miserable in his current state to question why Augustus suddenly had to leave. He finished the rest of his drink in one large gulp and slammed the glass down on the table. He groaned and shook his head to himself.
