sh*t, Rabastan thought. Where had she been hiding that no one had noticed her listening in on the scene that had played out?
"Evelyn," he said softly "We can't tell Professor Black anything. Listen," he said, knowing she would object. "Tonks lied to her to keep her safe... Rita wants to keep her safe, too. She's in a lot of danger if she stays with that man... we all just want her to be okay. You'd want that too, right?"

"But there has to be another way. We can't let her be so crushed. Did you see her face Rabastan? It was so sad." She couldn't understand why he would want the professor to think she had been cheated on. It wasn't true. There had to be some other way to keep her safe, from whatever was the danger.

"I know it was," he told her. "It was more than sad... it was heartbreaking. Professor Black is a good friend of mine," he added, lying. "And if there was any other way, believe me... we would have used it. But there wasn't. There isn't. Please trust me, Eves," he said, giving her his most sincere eyes.

"Well, if you're sure..." She looked back to the stairs after Andromeda. She knew this wasn't right but who was she to argue with Rabastan? And if they were good friends as Rabastan had said, then he would have thought through this all thoroughly before letting the professor go through it all. Sadly she looked back to Rabastan, why? She didn't know.

He reached out, putting his hands on her arms in a comforting way. "I promise it will be okay in the end. You understand, don't you? I really need you to keep this a secret for me. It's for the best."
He tried not to sound like he was speaking to a child, because he didn't want to patronize her, but he had to be absolutely sure she wasn't going to say anything.

Slowly Evelyn nodded her head without speaking. She knew that if she opened her mouth to agree, more questions would just pour out. And Rabastan had said it was for the best. That was really all she needed to hear. He wouldn't lie to her. His hand sent shivers down her spine. Shivers that made her feel better. She wasn't as sad when he was there, touching her, talking to her. She wondered if he felt anything similar when she was talking to him. Or was it all unrequited?

"Good," Rabastan said, inwardly incredibly thankful. He pulled Evelyn a little closer, to hug her in a supportive way. "I know it's hard," he said. "It killed me to see that too... but it would have happened sooner or later without Rita's help anyway. And I promise you... it's for the best."
He stopped there, not wanting to overkill it since she had already agreed to keep quiet.

This close it was hard for Evelyn to even hear what Rabastan was saying, let alone comprehend it. Her heart was pounding thunderously in her chest and threatened to explode if she didn't calm herself soon. But it was too hard to calm down, with Rabastan hugging her. His arms wrapped loosely around her. She was in heaven, her thoughts as far away from Professor Black, Ted, and Rita as possible. She rested her head on his shoulder and shut her eyes, just for a moment.

Rabastan let out a careful sigh. He had her, for now. He would just have to keep an eye on her for the next few days, and show up at every Herbology class now. It would be easy for her to slip up if he wasn't around.
"I'm glad you understand."

Even though she didn't want to, she pulled away from his friendly embrace. "I suppose we'd better get to dinner then." If it wasn't the opening ceremony for the house tournament she might have been bold enough to suggest they sneak off to the kitchens again for dinner. But then again, maybe she wouldn't be.

He was low to nod, but he did. They should go to dinner. He wondered if Andromeda would be there... as a staff member, she wuld probably be required. Oh well. She was going to have to learn that life moved on. The sooner, the better.
