Natalie heard the teacher's voice and glanced up. Before responding, she eyed the professor--Uncle Alastor's replacement--thoughtfully. Her first impression was favorable. The woman seemed competent to her, if a bit unconventional. But she also could sense that the class wouldn't necessarily be an easy one. She was glad for some of the spells her uncle had taught her.
"Natalie St. Clare," she responded in her quiet voice.

Which explained the air. Nikita mouthed a silent "ah" and marked her attendance, "Feel free to take a seat, or make your own." she nodded going back to her roster and roaming over the names.
It had to be hard for the girl, coming to this class, since Nikita was the replacement teacher after all, of the girl's uncle.

Samantha moved to one of the seats she had created and organized her stuff around her. This was a difficult spell, not the conjuring, but for how long she would be able to keep it. It was easy to create, another class from Beauxbatons had the same seats, so focusing was the easy part.
She saw the silent challenge in her professor's eyes and knew she would have to keep the couch for the entire period, even if it killed her-- which it wouldn't because she was familiar with these sorts of games from her tutors.
What was besides the difficulty was the inner glee at having earned her house points. She intended to do as much of that as she could.

Natalie walked quietly to Transfiguration class, lost in her thoughts. This had been her uncle's class last year. Now he was gone, possibly even dead. Where ever he was, he was too far away to sense him anymore. It made her ache inside with a pain that she knew, for once, to be her own. Was she to lose everyone she loved? Now she had her father and her aunt... as well as Voltaire and Isabella and Severus. Would she lose each of them, one by one, as she had with her mother, her sister, and now her aunt? These thoughts weighed heavily on her mind as she entered the classroom. A sense of melancholy hung over her like a wet blanket. So when she noticed that there were no desks, only a sofa and a few students standing around helplessly, she wasn't sure how to react. Most of the students were radiating confusion, one a certain sense of smug self-satisfaction, and another.... open hostility. She glanced over at the source of the hostility and saw Severus, sitting cross-legged on the floor, looking extremely sour. Her first instinct was to soothe him, but with her own state of mind so fragile, she wasn't sure how. Still she moved toward him and sat down on the floor unashamedly. "Are you OK?" she whispered, knowing full well that he was not. Severus turned in his seat and said "Fine." he began to push his feelings away, Natalie didn't need his crap to add to everyone elses. He leaned in and whispered in her ear "I just think this lady is arrogant." he felt better sharing the opinion and decided to bit of transfiguration to be an smart ass. He swished his wand and made two shakey looking crates, He was impressed that his ire went to making something as impressive as two crates. He turned the larger one on it's side and sat on the smaller one. "I'll probably end up on the floor in a minute, they aren't worth the nails that stuck them together." he said to Natalie.

Gage slid into class and looked around, there were no seats except for some random pieces of furniture that was strewn around the other students. He figured out the lesson i a minute tops. "Bek, Max," Gage said, walking to his friends and wearing a bright smile. "We have to create our own seating. Its to learn that everything in the world wont be handed to us on a silver platterr, we have ta work for it." he smiled. "Bek, could you make us a place to sit." He asked for the sole purpose that Bek was a seventh year and was more experienced than he or Maxi or Seth (who should show up soon.)

Bek nodded and stood up, pulled out her wand and swished flicked poked and prodded until 3 lounge chairs set themselves up. She smiled brightly. For her, three lounge chairs would be easy to keep up until class ended. "This work for you two?" she asked, teasing her two friends.

Sam didn't mind that the other students whom she had recently become acquainted with didn't choose to sit next to her. If the seating remained empty she would shorten it and perhaps change couch into her father's armchair after all.
She was more annoyed, however, about how long the class would be. She glanced at the window, but refused to sigh longingly. No for everyone else, she was happy to be there.

Nikita curled the corner of her mouth upwards in a smirk as the students were getting situated. Severus' attempt wasn't half bad considering he hadn't been taught, Bek's demonstration was what Nikita would have expected from a seventh year and she was delighted to know that people were on track.
"That was a nice spell Bek. Have you thought about your N.E.W.T.s?" she asked the girl could test in transfiguration, but it was a hard subject.

Samantha eyed the teacher speculatively. Transfiguration was one of her better subjects, she wondered briefly how this class would turn out. The teacher seemed...lively, actually she seemed like a ...well there was no need for names. Sam smiled slowly to herself, she had a feeling puppy eyes and innocent excuses wouldn't work here and while that made things a bit harder, it just meant that Sam would actually have to be impressive, and that she didn't mind doing.
N.E.W.T.s and O.W.L.s were something to sigh over, though Sam resisted the temptation. She wanted to get them over with, and then she could be free to study her subjects even more in depth. It might break her brother's heart that she didn't intend to take Arithmancy, but she had no use for the numbers, and a heavy use for Transfiguration and Defense.

It was the first time anyone had suggested the NEWTs to her, and Transfiguration was one of her better subjects. "I've thought about it a little," Bek replied truthfully. She really wanted to decide on what NEWTs she was taking, but only after she knew what skills she'd need for whatever carreer she chose.

Alice sat in the chair she'd already managed to summon. She was usually quiet and non-obtrusive about her own spell casting, though she was quite competent at transfiguration already. This didn't mean however that she was always perfect, quite the contrary but conjuring a chair had become a fairly simple task that she could maintain for a long period of time. The chair she'd made was not rudimentary or embellished, but it was sturdy and even had a soft cushion for comfort. She watched the other students who were still working on their chairs as they one by one found or made chairs of their own and sat down.
She also listened attentively to the professor as she gave praise to Bek. Alice knew Bek, she was in her own house and grade after all. But she had never really gotten to be close friends with her. She figured she should probably make an effort to do so before their last year of school ended.

Nikita gave her a half smile, "You might want to think about it a little more." she said with a firm nod before noting someone else icome in the class. She glanced at the clock, well either her students were here or they weren't but she needed to start the class.
First she looked Alice's way, "Name?"

Alice smiled at the new professor.... "Alice, madam... Alice Lon... Prewett" She corrected herself at the last moment... She HAD been paying attention to the class but then her mind wandered and .. well it had only lasted a second but enough to make her screw up when she responded to the professor. "Alice Prewett" she clarified when she realized she'd sounded as if she'd said Lonprewett. She cleared her throat and smiled again. Maybe no one would notice. "7th year Gryffindor" she finished matter-of-factly.

"Alice Lon...Alice prewett." she said locking eyes with the girl to make sure she had her name straight and then she looked down her list to find the name and mark attendance. She noticed there were stragglers who weren't in her class yet, but there always were, and she wouldn't delay the rest of the class because of them.
"Alright, now you've all done well for your first assignment. Gage..." she said looking for the boy in the class, "Was it? " she asked not sure of his name, but nodded, " As he put it quite accurately, nothing in this life is given freely, everything comes with a price, in most case, that price is hard work." because heaven forbid it be something else but she knew her fair share of people who wanted the pound of flesh still.
"Now if you'll look around the room, also quite bare, you'll each be able to have an imput for what the class looks like. This is as much your classroom as it is mine and I think collectively we can arrange it to suit our needs, and have some fun while we're at it. "
She used wandlessly summoned a quill and parcels for each of her students, "I want you now to think of a theme you'd find amusing for the class, be it underwater, or jungle fever you can decide."
She glanced around the room and then leaned back on her desk, "Each week this classroom will be bare, each week you will summon your own seating, and then we will proceed to summon things for the class. For you older years I fully expect you to help those in a lower year than you, for those of you who are nervous about transfiguring or completely in the blue on how to go about it your books have a lot of information, but I will tell you now that we won't be using the text often. There is no Textbook on life, there's no telling what you'll need from time to time. "
She crossed her arms over her chest, "I'll hold private lessons, and a general aid every day, you can find me pretty much here, if not.." she moved around her desk to to pull out a box, "Write your name and the reason for why you want me and drop the note in here, I'll be able to get back to you. For anyone who wants to simply practice transfiguration on the side, my classroom is open to you when I'm in here." She shrugged, " So I'm putting this class effectively into your hands, it can be fun if you decide it to be, I'm looking forward to the new year."

Seth was out of breath, he had been working in the library and almost forgot about Transfiguration class, so he bolted to the second floor, just in time to realize he was late. He looked around the class and saw the random assortment of chairs and stools and then saw his friend sitting on lounge chairs in a seperate part of the room.
"What's going on?" Seth asked, mainly to Gage, who knew pretty much everything, even though he's only 12.

Gage sighed and decided to repeat himself for Seth. "We have to create our own seating. Its to learn that everything in the world wont be handed to us on a silver platterr, we have ta work for it." he said. Bek made us chairs, since she's best at Transfiguration."

"Want a chair Ino?" Bek asked, holding out her wand and preparing to make another chair. She hoped that she could keep concentration on four chairs, but was pretty confident she'd be fine.

Samantha noticed Seth as he walked in and started a wave, but shrugged it off when he went to the others. She wasn't jealous, not really. Sometimes it was nice to think she could belong somewhere, and have a group of friends like those four. It was funny that they were all in different houses and different ages and yet seemed to be such good friends. What would it be like to be in their circle? What would it be like to have a circle at all? To have people actually sit on the sofa she had made? She wondered and lamented it only for a milisecond before her spine stiffened. Broomhandle. She was Samantha Montgomery, she didn't need friends, she certainly didn't need to impose herself on a circle already made. As if that was the defining moment, she rearanged what she had transfigured to model her father's highback leather chair and cherrywood desk, but didn't raise her head. She had her quill in hand and was writing her "themes" down for the classroom as if there wasn't a change at all.

"Get things for ourselves eh?" Seth asked. Then he looked at Bek. "No, Bek, it's okay, I got this," he said, knowing how much concentration it took to Transfigure furniture out of thin air. Instead, Seth turned on his heals and walked out of class.
"Be right back I promise!"

"You're late." she remarked to the boy who just entered the class, "Name?" she asked quickly glancing at her roster for who was missing.
She noticed the change in Samantha's spell and looked up at the girl, it was an impressive transfiguration and it caused Nikita's brow to furrow, but she shook that thought off and looked at Seth again only to find he had left.
"What the..." she looked at Gage, Bek, and Maxi as if for an explanation.
