Field work? It was about time she got to do something besides paperwork. She wasn't emotionless, but she kept them well guarded at least she guarded her true feelings most of the time. She was very good at showing emotions she didn't feel too.
Arachne gave a smile, it was the type of smile that was meant to be friendly but somehow it was more alluring than she'd intended it to be. "I would look forward to it if that is where you need me to be, Mr. Rookwood."

That was more like it, he thought. There was a little bit more respect in her words, though he had to wonder if she didn't mean it.
He gave her one long, appraising once over, and smiled. "How are you with children, Ms. Weaver?"
If he were to assume, which he often did, and was often correct, she looked the type who despised children. If that were true, it would be an interesting testament to her loyalty to the office to do what he was going to ask of her.

This time Arachne did frown but only slightly, of course a frown from Ara was only the slight turning down of the edges of her lips. How was she with children? She couldn't stand them. It was bad enough being saddled with two that weren't even hers. She would never have children of her own, they were only a useless hassle.
"I do not like children, Mr. Rookwood. But I do have experience with them." It was true she did have experience although her experience was usually to let them take care of themselves if she could have her way. Of course, how many other people had to deal with a werewolf as one of them. It had tainted her feelings on children ever since. Her comment to Augustus was a gross understatement... she deplored younger children, unless they were useful or old enough to no longer be needy. She knew her eyes had hardened though but didn't care to change it. What did it matter if he knew if she hated children or not.

"Experience is not necessary," Augustus replied smoothly. "The work I would have you do requires you to be around a lot of children for a lot of the time."
He leaned back casually. He should give one of the others in the office this position, but he needed... wanted... to keep his eye on this girl.
"I am going to be spending a fair amount of time at Hogwarts School. I would like to have another set of eyes with me. If you think you could handle a job as a teaching assistant...."

Arachne wasn't sure if this assignment was a good thing or not. She was NOT looking forward to being surrounded day and night by a bunch of angsty children. But she knew she still needed to prove herself to Mr. Rookwood as well. She'd do anything for this job.. anything. And as happy as she was inwardly to finally get a field project, she wasn't thrilled that it was to help babysit a bunch of kids. Not to mention her two cousins went to Hogwarts. This was not going to be pleasant but she would do it regardless. And she'd do her best to make the time worth her while somehow.
Hopefully the assignment would be something to keep her busy, but she could play her part. She was patient and she could wear any mask she needed to. It was something she'd learned to do many years ago. The best kept secrets are where you never expect to find them, and she'd kept her secrets well by knowing when to act the part that was required. Besides maybe she could also find something to entertain herself while she was there, anything was more entertaining than paperwork. At least there were older kids there as well as other adults, and she idly wondered what tangled webs she could weave amongst the school. She would have to consider the possibilites once she assessed the situation. But of course, her first duty would be to please Mr. Rookwood.
She knew what he expected, he'd made it perfectly clear durring her tenure that he expected nothing less than the best. Luckily Ara was able to give him what he asked for without too much effort on her part, so far it'd been fairly simple and finishing things ahead of schedule gave her time to find other things within the department of interest.
"My eyes, Mr. Rookwood are at your service, as is anything else of me you require me to do. And I am sure that I could handle any teaching assistant job or other cover that might be necessary."
She had excelled in Durmstrangs, and Hogwarts couldn't be more difficult. Although she was disappointed when she'd learned that they didn't teach the Dark Arts as a core curriculum here. They let their students go too soft by only teaching defensive spells. Besides the best defense was indeed to know the ins and outs of the dark magic itself. Though she was quite skilled in potions as well as the esoteric arts, occulmency, divination and the like. She still had yet to divulge the fact of her other special abilities of forseeing, but she would eventually tell him if she felt there was a reason to share it, something to be gained from letting him know. Until then, it was one of her many closely kept secrets.

Augustus nodded. "I have a few more things I would like to discuss with Ms. Kinsella. Would you wait for me in my office, and I will give you more details of this assignment?" He asked her, and though it was a question, it did not leave any room for arguement or a no.
It would be a good test for her, he thought, to see her loyalty and dedicaton to the job. He was actually pleased that she did not like children. It made the test better.
"I'll be in shortly," he said, looking at her to dismiss her.

Arachne only smiled and nodded with precision before turning and gliding away towards his office. She had an odd habbit of seeming like the she was gliding when she walked, and it took no effort on her part. Her black, flowing skirts that almost touched the ground usually contributed to that fact. She didn't hesitate at his question other than a very smooth "Of course, Mr. Rookwood." And she was gone around the corner in a matter of moments.
Though she did wonder inwardly at what this assignment could be at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. She was not however pleased to have to see her cousins or any other children for that matter. She hoped she could find something interesting to do with her time on assignment. But quite frankly she was happy to be finaly given something besides paperwork to do. Even if it meant being around children all day.

Fiona was unable to hide the pang of jealousy she felt at learning this girl would be spending so much time in close proximity to Augustus. Luckily for her, no one was paying any attention to her. She was used to being dismissed and forgotten, and what reason would Mr. Rookwood have to dwell on her?
She considered moving away and getting back to her work, but then he said her name again. The way he said her name... it was like poetry to her, and she couldn't quite hide the ghost of a smile that appeared on her face. Look on the bright side, she reminded herself, at least the girl won't be around here for a while. She just hated that she wouldn't be able to see Mr. Rookwood on a daily basis. She wondered if maybe he'd want to meet with her on occasion, to receive reports on the various projects. The thought gave her goosebumps.
Fiona watched the girl--little more than a child, really--as she walked out of the room. Her slow, graceful movements annoyed Fiona, who could never move like that. Turning her eyes away from the girl, she focused her attention on Augustus once again.

Augustus watched her leave and nodded slowly, waiting until she was out of ear shot before he pulled a chair over and sat next to Fiona.
"It should have been you, Ms. Kinsella," he told her openly and frankly. "But unfortunately, I trust you too much, and I need you to keep things in order here. You're the only one in the Department that I know will tell me everything. And I need to knowthat I can trust her, which is why she is coming with me." In his way, he had given her a vey large compliment. It was not something he would have said to anyone, but the little bit of human he had in him felt bad for choosing the intern over her.
"You understand, don't you?"

He trusted her. She wasn't quite able to bite back the smile of pleasure that this knowledge brought to her face. She supposed he just meant that she was truthworthy and loyal, like the average cocker spaniel. Still, it was a compliment and it made her heart skip a beat. He didn't give many of them. And he'd bestowed one on her, a big one. And she'd thought she just vanished into the background!
"Of course... of course, Mr. Rookwood," she said in a breathy voice. "And I thank you. I promise, I'll keep things in order here, and tell you whatever you need to know. For what it's worth..." she paused, wondering whether it was appropriate to volunteer this information. "I think you're right to keep an eye on that one. If you don't mind me saying so, that is."
She swallowed, hoping she hadn't just spoken out of turn.

Augustus smiled and nodded. "Thank you, Ms. Kinsella." Perhaps she had overstepped her bounds, but he was intrigued that Fiona didnt like Arachne. On the other hand, it was disappointing as well. He liked both women, and were curious to see if he could bring them along in darker, non ministry approved missions... and the fact that they were at odds told him he would likely have to choose just one.
"I'll be checking in on occassion. Thank you," he said, nodding once and waiting only a second to see if she had more to say.

Fiona nodded breathlessly. She definitely wanted to say more, but she couldn't; not without revealing her personal feelings for him. And that certainly wouldn't be appropriate. Instead, she attempted to keep it purely professional. "You won't regret leaving me in charge, Mr. Rookwood. I'll keep you informed about everything that goes on. You can count on me."
She attempted a shy smile then, but bit down on her bottom lip as she did. Merlin, he had such a presence... so commanding and powerful... she hoped he didn't know legilimency....

(I swear I responded to this)
"No, I am quite sure I won't regret leaving you in charge at all, Ms. Kinsella," Augustus replied. She was an awkward girl, he admitted that rather easily, but she worked hard and would do anything he asked of her, and that gave her certain benefits in his book... like being left in charge while he was elsewhere. "Thank you for taking on the extra responsibility.

Fiona blushed, and she quickly lowered her head so he wouldn't notice. "No, sir, thank you for giving me the responsibility. I'm honored that you thought me worthy of it." She took a breath, trying to keep from gushing. She was in very great danger of becoming a babbling fool, and how on earth would he be able to respect her then? "If... that's all, sir, I should probably be getting back to work..."
She was reluctant to leave him, but since the chances of him wrapping his arms around her and declaring his undying love for her were pretty much nonexistent, she wanted to get back to work, where she felt infinitely more at ease. Being so close to him, having his magnificent eyes on her, had her feeling flustered and was giving her ridiculous hopes that certainly could not ever come true.

He never actually expected her to turn him away, but what was he supposed to say?
"Yes, of course. Your work is important." He nodded.
"I will leave more specific instructions before I leave for the school, Ms. Kinsella. Until then, continue with your hard work and I'll drop by later."
He turned and left her then, receding back to his own office where he could be alone and not have any of the women in the department bother him.

Fiona felt her spirits plummeting to the floor as he turned and walked away. Stupid Fiona... stupid. Why would she tell him to leave? Why did she want him to go? She wanted to call him back, fall down at his feet and plead with him to... what? Love her? See her as more than just a nerdy little office drudge with her nose to the grindstone?
When he closed the door behind him, Fiona dropped her head down on the table top and began to bang it against the wood. "I'm such an idiot!" she groaned miserably.

Luke knew that something was going on, but he was too busy at the moment to stop and find out about it. He finished up what he was doing and walked to Fiona. She really was beautiful, but of course he didn't stand a chance. She wanted someone else, but that wasn't going to really make him stop liking her and possibly trying whenever the time was right. This time, he was actually going to her for a reason other than to attempt to possibly flirt to her. He was going to see why Mr. Rockwood left.
He heard her beating something. Luke peered over and raised an eyebrow. "And why are you such an idiot," he asked.

Fiona jumped up and stared at him, wide-eyed for a moment. "Luke!" she gasped, as if it had taken her a moment to remember his name. In fact, it had actually taken her a moment to even remember her own name.
"Um... It's nothing, really... I'm fine... I mean, everything is fine." She took a few deep breaths, then continued, "Um, actually, Mr. Rookwood is going to be out of the office for a bit. He's going to be spending time at Hogwarts for the Tournament... he's a judge. And he's left me in charge." She gave a nervous laugh, still not quite able to believe he had singled her out above anyone else. "So, um... if you could make sure you keep me informed of everything you're working on, that would help a lot..."

He still looked at her with an eyebrow raised. Fiona seemed to be very flustered but yet that wasn't anything different because Augustus just left. "Ah," said Luke. "I was just wondering what was going on before I got to wrapped up in working and didn't know anything. And, of course I'll keep you updated with what I'm working on. I'm still working on the same thing actually. I think that I'm almost finished with it however."
Luke studied her for a moment. "You'll be just fine in charge Fiona."
