"I don't know where he gets off being such a-" Rayne cut herself off by saying the password to get into the common room. She was as tempermental right now as the red hair suggested. "It's not even a regular class in the curriculum. It's extra, and what did we even do today? Watch him go completely off his rocker and shout out a few spells? Yes, I feel prepared to duel now, thank goodness I took that class."
She sighed, dropping her bag on the floor next to one of the overstuffed chairs in the common room, and then dropping her body much the same way into the chair. She looked up at Evelyn, who, aside from having to do the assignment, had escaped unscathed. "Unbelievable."

Evelyn felt that the bad mood Professor Rothschild's felt toward the class was somehow her fault. She had been the first to question his actions. Though, she was also quite certain Rayne would have said something no matter who else had started the conversation. "Well," she said, plopping down onto the chair next to Rayne, "maybe he wasn't feeling well..." She thought over his excuse for Natalie, saying she must have been ill. It was far fetched, certainly. But Evelyn was a little too trusting at times.
"I don't think we should have gotten an essay, no matter the case. And not even the whole class has to do it. If I had known all I needed to do was tell my favorite jam to get out of an essay..." She let the sentence fade as she shook her head, baffled.

"Well, it's stupid," Rayne said. "He and that girl go round the bend, and he starts yelling at us to yell out stupid, pointless spells, and then tells us we're not participating. Granted, I didn't shout out a spell, or the ever so much more important favorite jam. Sirius Black didn't even volunteer an answer!" She said, as if she had just remembered that. "He was called on. This is ridiculous. And I have to spend my Saturday with him."
She wasn't happy at all. "Heaven forbid someone should question a teacher."

She agreed with everything Rayne was saying. Sirius certainly got out easy. If the Professor had called on her, she would have complied. Evelyn scowled. "I don't see the point in us doing any paperwork at all really. I mean, this is supposed to be a practicum class. How practical is writing? I wonder if Professor McGonagal would agree? He clearly isn't being rational."

Rayne gave Evelyn a look of disgust. "Clearly isn't being rational? He was talking to thin air!" She pointed out. "And then let that girl out of class because she was just as loony as he was." She pulled out a piece of parchment, writing her name and working out an introductory paragraph to that ridiculous essay.
"Maybe I'll start speaking in tongues in detention and get on his good side again."

"Well..." Evelyn didn't have a good response to that. Professor Rothschild had acted extremely odd during class and wasn't trying to stick up for him. But she did hope there was some rational explanation to it all. "Maybe he... Oh I don't know! The man's obviously off his rocker. I've never seen anything so strange the whole time we've been here." Perhaps Peeves was playing some mean joke on the professor. But that still wouldn't explain why no one else saw him. She decided to stop trying to rationalize this situation. It wasn't helping anything.
She watched as Rayne pulled her things from her bag and got started on her essay. Evelyn didn't want to do her work now, but if Rayne was going to, it would certainly be easier doing it with a friend than later when everyone else was off having fun. Sighing, she too pulled out a quill, ink, and parchment and placed them so that they balanced on the arm of the chair.

Rayne sighed, watching her friend as she took out her own parchment and things. "We should probably go to the library... there's not much we can do without those essays things we need to read."
She leaned back in the overstuffed chair, running a hand through her hair. She really didn't feel like getting all of those essays and pouring over them just yet. "I'm sorry I ranted so much about him, Eves."

Evelyn made a face at the suggestion they go to the library. She hadn't even opened her ink well because she had no desire to write that particular paper just yet. She simply shrugged and drawled, "whatever." She was in no rush to head down to the library just yet and so she left her things on the arm of the chair.
"You don't have to apologize to me. I wasn't trying to stick up for him. I just don't understand it, is all. You know me. I always think there's a reason. It'll keep me up tonight thinking about it."

Rayne rolled her eyes. "Please. Don't waste any more time thinking about him. I'll let you know how he acts in detention and then we can decide if he was having a bad day or if he really is off his rocker," she decided with a nod. "Personally... I think he's just lost it. Heaven forbid I say so."
She dipped her quill in ink again and started writing. "At least I can get the first aragraph out of the way. I don't care to do much more tonight. Tonight should be reserved for some kind of ridiculously girly slumber party or something."

"Ugh," Evelyn groaned. "You have detention too. I'd almost forgot about that. You poor thing." Evelyn made an overly-dramatic pity face at Rayne. "And with that horrible Slytherin girl too. She's just awful."
Evelyn decided that her essay would be easier to work on in the morning, when she wasn't so confused by the day's events. But she still did not put away her things, in case she changed her mind. She was likely to get bored at watching Rayne write, and start in on her own parchment, no matter what she told herself. "Shall we inform the boys so they can let their imaginations wander?" She laughed at the guys who, upon hearing the words 'sleep over', would begin drooling at the thought of the girls jumping about in their knickers, knocking the stuffing out of each other with pillows.

"Andrea, is that her name?" Rayne asked, thinking of that Slytherin girl. "She's a brat. Spoiled and petulant and with no regard for anyone else but herself. Maybe she'll just be quiet during detention." She sighed, and then almost smiled. "Except I'm sure she thinks it's my fault she has detention too."
She laughed as she penned her first sentence. "You know what, Eves? Let's give them a detailed 'plan' of the night. That ought to keep them all sufficiently happy."

"It's not even your fault you have detention!" Evelyn protested. The whole thing was so infuriating it made her want to spit. How was she supposed to spend time gushing over boys with her best friend, if her best friend was in a detention she didn't deserve? Now she would be forced to study instead of put her homework off until the last minute as she usually did.

Rayne sighed. "I know. But it's one Saturday. I think I can manage," she said with a definite nod. She then smiled at Evelyn. "Besides, Eves, it's not like this is the first detention I've ever landed myself in."
She didn't try to be rude. Honestly, sometimes it was just that she thought people deserved to know when they were being either rude, unreasonable, or crazy. All of which she thought Voltaire had been.

Nate walked into the common room in time to hear the word slumber party, half blushed his ears burning and his mind wandering before looking at Rayne and dashing up to the boys dorms. Why did he have to come in to hear things like girls having a slumber party. Is that what they did up there? Walk around in their skivvies throwing pillows at each other and.. no he was not going to let his mind go there... he sighed and as he got to his own dorm room he leaned against the door his ears burning red with his own thoughts of Rayne.

Rayne had seen him climbing the stairs from the corner of her eye, and she turned to say hello to him, but he disappeared before she could.
She sighed, turning back to Evelyn. "Is it just me, or is Nate acting strange lately?" She stopped and thought about it... he'd actually always been this way, and it was nothing actually strange. Just little things... she shrugged.

Nate finally calmed down his own hormones, he was a fool if he though she'd actually think of him like that. She was just a friend he thought to himself firmly trying to rid himself of ideas of slumber parties and girls with pillows. He'd just been hitting puberty this year and he blamed that as the cause for all his issues lately. His voice was just starting to deepen now that he was getting out of that half croaky kid-voice stage and he'd even grown a few inches over the summer so that for the first time he actually felt quite tall compared to the girls his age.
Nate walked over to inspect himself in a mirror noticing how much of the baby cheeks had been vanishing too, he almost didn't recognize himself lately. Yep that must be his problem.. overactive hormones. And obviously Rayne didn't think of him as more than a friend either. Nate walked over to his bed and sat down on the edge raking his fingers through his hair.
He'd just found out today that there was going to be a Yule Ball with the tournament going on and quite frankly it scared the hell out of him. His first instinct was to ask Rayne or Evelyn, they were his friends afterall. But he dismissed them both knowing they likely had other guys just waiting to ask them. Maybe he could just not show up he thought as he wondered if anyone would notice his absense. But the image of Rayne all fancied up made him feel warm and uncomfortable, a feeling he was not used to. He firmly tried to push it out of his mind as he grabbed a book and tried desprately to read it.. anything was better than his own overactive imagination of what the girls did when they were alone in their rooms.

Evelyn had watched Nate dash by too, and was about to say something when Rayne beat her to it. "Stranger than normal, anyway." She wouldn't say anything to Rayne just yet, as she would like to give Nate the chance to figure it out for himself before everyone else knew. But lately Nate had been looking at Rayne the same way Evelyn looked at Rabastan. And while she wasn't sure how long she could keep from telling Rayne about Nate's unknowing feelings, she did think she could hold off long enough to mess with them a bit. "Why don't you go grab him and bring him back. We can have an intervention." She laughed as she adjusted her weight on her chair.

Rayne rolled her eyes. "Sure, let me go get him," she joked, not making a move to get up from her seat. Nate was forgotten about in the next few moments as she looked back at her parchment, then sighed.
"No, this is hopeless right now," she decided. "Stop letting me try and do homework!" She teased Evelyn, smiling. "We're we talking about slumber parties and the like?"

Nate sat on his bed for several minutes trying to think of something else.. it had succeeded only to change his thoughts more towards Rayne. Why had he grabbed his potions book? And it never failed, he managed to turn to the worst pages possible.. love potions. He slammed his book shut this was not helping he needed to get some air and clear his mind.
Nate almost stormed down the stairs, not that has angry to upset.. unless it was at himself but because he was frustrated that he couldn't control his own thoughts and he knew those thoughts would only cause him trouble. Rayne had never even looked at him twice except as a friend at most and that was almost like calling a Tiger a cat. She held herself back from real friendships he'd noticed and how was a guy supposed to get past a wall like that anyways? He was definitely frustrated, mostly with himself for wanting a girl he was never likely to have, damn his hormones.. why couldn't he just go back to being a boy who didn't notice girls.
He came down to the common room and headed to the doorway leading out trying to keep his eyes focused on the door so he wouldn't have to make things worse for himself.

Rayne saw him again, and gave Evelyn a look. What was going on with that boy?
"Hey, Nate, hold on a second," Rayne said, turning in her seat to get a better look at him. "Where are you rushing off to?"
Nate was her friend, even if anyone who was really friends with Rayne still didn't know much about her. Heck, Evelyn didn't even know anything about her family, which was the reason she is the way she is. But she wanted to make sure that Nate was all right. He was acting awfully strange.
