Claire tilted her neck back slowly to let him have more access to her neck and collarbone. She let out an involuntary moan and ran her fingers through his hair. Right now, she was somewhere else other than her apartment. She was somewhere she could just let herself go.
When his lips returned to hers, she kissed him hungrily. However, when he picked her up, reality started to trickle its way back to her. She couldn't let this go any further. Breaking the kiss, she looked at him. Part of her didn't want to tell him no, but the other half did. "Edmund put me down," she said nicely.

Edmund was still carrying her into the bedroom, and he was a little surprised when she pulled away and told him to put her down. He stopped walking and stared down at her, but he didn't put her down. Not yet. He couldn't bear to give up just yet. Not now.
"Claire..." he groaned. Even saying her name hurt. Damn her... why did she always have to pull away? "What's the problem?" He managed to keep his voice calm, but it was hard. He knew full well what was wrong. He just had to find a way to talk her out of it.

She hated to stop, but she knew that it was for the best. If she let it continue, then things would never be the same. Claire rolled her eyes as he groaned. She knew exactly what he wanted and that's why he kissed her.
"Edmund you know full well what's wrong. We both know where this is headed, and I want you to put me down. I'm not going to be another notch in your bedpost!"

She would never be just another notch on his bedpost. She meant much more to him than that, but he didn't know how to admit that to her. Furthermore, he wasn't entirely sure that he wouldn't eventually lose interest in her once the chase was over. It seemed incomprehensible to him, but what if it did? He couldn't guarantee anything, because he'd never felt for anyone what he'd felt for her. It scared him a little.
He remembered, in his last year at Hogwarts, a girl he'd been particularly taken with. She had been a Ravenclaw, and was always hiding her face behind a book. It was like she was utterly unaware of how beautiful she was. He had pursued her relentlessly for months, until finally she had given in. But after he'd won her over, he'd lost interest. He thought Claire was different from that... but he wasn't sure. The feelings he had for her were unfamiliar and strange.
Setting her down slowly, he dropped his hands to his sides and looked at her silently for a long moment. "Is that what you think of me?" he asked, feeling strangely unsettled.

Claire couldn't lose interest. Actually, she didn't think that she could ever lose interest in him. She had been attached the day she had met him, however she decided then and there she wasn't going to be easy to get. Claire had always desired a good relationship. She thought that she had one the year she graduated from school. However, the boy cheated on her and she never thought she could settle again. Of course, everything changed when she met Edmund, but he wasn't really the 'settling down' type. So, she had settled for one night stands to try and ease her mind away from him, but it always failed.
Her look hardened as he put her down. At his comment, her expression immediately softened and turned into utter confusion. "What do you mean is that what I think about you? Edmund, name one girl that you slept with and then kept on seeing her afterwords." The last part just slipped out unintentionally, but she didn't stop. "I'm not going to become one of those girls that you just sleep with and then never speak to them again."

He couldn't deny it. It was the truth, of course, and she knew it all too well. She knew him too well. And yet, it was odd... because she knew him so well, he sometimes felt like he could tell her just about anything. Just about. There were some things he couldn't tell even her, things he didn't even dare voice aloud.
But in a weird way, Claire was actually his best friend. It sounded insane and dorky... like something out of junior high school. But it was true. They knew each other too well.
He sighed. "You're different, Claire. Don't you know that?"

She folded her arms against her chest. "Right," she said disbelievingly. "What do you mean I'm different? It's not like your going to whisk me off my feet and tell me how much you love me and mean it."
Claire shook her head. "Look, Edmund. You say I'm different, but I don't see any proof. It would just be another one of your one night stands, and frankly, I'm not in the mood for a one night stand right now." She tried to be careful with her words because she was scared she'd slip something out. In a way, she was hinting subtly at her inner thoughts.

Edmund stared at her a moment, feeling confused. Was that what she wanted? For him to sweep her off her feet and tell her that he loved her? He wasn't quite sure he could do that. He didn't know what he felt for her, only that she drew him in, drove him crazier than any other woman he'd ever known. But was it really just the thrill of the chase? Or was it... dare he even think the word... love?
He decided to take the defensive approach. "And if I did say I loved you, would you even believe me? Or would you just toss me out for lying. I don't make promises, Claire. All I know is, you wouldn't be just another one-night stand."

Claire sighed and ran her hands through her hair. "I don't know," she said confused. She didn't know what was going on. Everything seemed to be mixed up. Did Edmund actually care about her? Probably not, but then again who knew?
"For as long as I've known you, you've never settled for one woman for too long. You have to have a different one every time you turn around." Sure, Claire hadn't settled for one man, but the one man she would settle for was just out of her grasp. Part of her wanted to scream out that she cared about him, but the more reasoning part of her said that she couldn't say anything.
"How do I know I wouldn't be just another one-night stand?" Claire sighed aggravated with herself. Why did she even let it go to this? Usually she was on her guard, but she had put it down.
"You know what? I can't take this," she said more to herself than to him. "Just.... just go." Her eyes told different than what she said. She didn't really want him to go. She wanted to kiss him again, but she tried not to.

Edmund wanted to argue with her, to try and convince her to let him stay. He could sit there and tell her whatever it was that she wanted to hear. Easy enough... it worked with every other woman. But he knew Claire would not be fooled. She knew him too well. And somehow it actually felt... wrong... to say those things to her, if he wasn't sure he meant them. It never felt wrong with any other woman, but to her... he couldn't do it.
Did that mean he did mean them?
"Claire... come on... we both want this..." His protests were feeble, but he didn't know what else to say to her. He'd already lost.

Claire made up her mind, and she had to stick with it. She knew that he was telling the truth, but she wasn't going to agree. She couldn't let him stay, for her sanity. There was no way that she was going to let go with him.... not yet.
"Edmund... I can't. I'm not going to sleep with you, because I know what you'll do afterwords." She sighed again. "Please, just go. Please."

Edmund sighed. He knew there was one thing he could say that would convince her to let him stay. But he couldn't bring himself to say it. Why was it so hard to say three little words?
"Fine," he said. "I'll go. But this is not over." He stood there a moment and raked his hand through his hair. Then abruptly, he grabbed her again and kissed her quickly but thoroughly. "Au revoir, mon chere," he said. Then he turned on his heels and headed for the door.

Claire felt butterflies in her stomach when he said that it wasn't over. Why did this have to be so confusing? Why did he have to be confusing? She knew that he probably figured out that she actually cared for him, but she knew that he wasn't going to commit to anything.
As he kissed her quickly, Claire didn't want him to stop, but refused to do anything after he pulled away, and turned away. She wanted to run towards him and make him stay, because she knew that he probably would if she asked. That was ridiculous!
She just watched him go, glued to her place on the floor for a moment, but started to walk towards the door before he could leave and caught his wrist. What the hell was she doing? Claire stood on her toes and kissed him one last time. She pulled away, biting her lower lip. She took a few steps backwards and just waved by to him. Claire was scared that if she tried to say bye, something other than that would slip out.

There was a chance, however slim, that if he went back in there and kissed her again, that she'd be unable to resist anymore. But as frustrated as he felt at that moment, he suddenly felt that he wanted to wait. To continue the chase. It had become a game with them, and sooner or later, it would have to end. And, if he played it just right, there wouldn't be any losers. This was a game they could both win.
He flashed her a cocky grin. "See you soon, Claire," he said. Then he opened the door and walked out, without looking back.
