Potions Class 3

"Um, not yet." Sirius said looking away.

[Rori Logan]

"Oh." she said quietly. "Okay." she gave a small half hearted smile and folded her arms and waited for the professor to start the class.

Sirius looked down at his book and read some.

[Catherine Blustrode]

Catherine began to set up again, waiting for class to start.

[Albus Dumbledore]

"Well," said Slughorn, "I guess we'll have to continue without Mr. Snape and Miss Heart today. But maybe we can finally finish a class," he added with a chuckle. "I want you all to turn to page 57 in your books, to the formula for a standard anti-venom solution. Please read the directions carefully and begin making the potion. I have a sample here of Basilisk venom, and we'll be testing your potions against it."

Sirius started reading page 57. Once he had read the page, he got to work on the potion. He added the ingredients, stirred it, and let it set for a little bit.

[Remus Lupin]

Remus waved to Sabrina. "Hey, you can sit with us," he said. He stared down at the formula for the anti-venom potion and started taking out the ingredients.

[Sabrina St. Clare]

Sabrina walked over and sat on Remus's other side. "Hey, guys," she said. She opened up her book to page 57 and began to work on her potion. Looking over at Remus, she smiled at him and said, "Make sure you add the dandelion leaves before the catepillar legs. And don't put in too much of the bubotuber pus, or you'll do what Anna would do." She giggled.

[Rori Logan]

Rori began reading on page 57 and began adding in her stuff. She didn't add enough dandelion leaves and the potion started to bubble. Uh, oh! she thought before adding a couple more dandelion leaves. Thank goodnessshe thought sighing. Finally she finished and raised her hand. "Professor, um, is this okay?"

Alice opened open her book and began to read the page. After reading she began to work on her potion. It was boring work and Alice wondered why she had taken the class in the first place, but her mother had insisted she take Potions. After a bit of work, Alice finished her potion and hoped she made it right.

James read through the directions, and began to casually toss the ingredients into his cauldron. He heard Sabrina say something about not adding too much bubotuber pus, just as he was about to add the contents of his vial. Quickly he stopped and measured out just the right amount. His potion bubbled wildly, but didn't explode. He raised his hand. "I think I'm done, Professor."

[Sabrina St. Clare]

Sabrina added the last of her ingredients and stirred her potion as it bubbled wildly. Slowly the bubbles calmed down, and she was left with a thin, syrupy mixture of pale yellow. "I'm done, Professor," she said.

[Remus Lupin]

Remus put in the exact amount of bubotuber pus and gave his potion a quick stir. It began to bubble violently, so he immediately jumped back as the mixture boiled over the sides. "Now what did I do wrong?" he moaned.

[Albus Dumbledore]

Slughorn walked around the room, checking each student's potion as they finished. "Not bad, Mr. Black," he said as he tested Sirius's potion against the basilisk venom and watched the venom dissolve almost completely. Then he moved along to Rori's potion. "Very good!" he said approvingly. He tested the potion and the venom disappeared completely.

Next he moved on to Alice's potion. "It looks about right," he said, examining it. "Let's test it." He put a few drops of the potion into another vial of the basilisk venom and watched as it dissolved to about half. "Not bad, Miss Caden, but it's a tiny bit weak. You needed just a little more of the caterpillar legs."

"Mr. Potter, let's see yours," Slughorn said. He checked James's potion, which was still bubbling wildly. Adding a drop to the venom, it dissolved very quickly, then dissolved the vial itself! "Yours is a bit too strong," he said.

He then walked over to Sabrina. "Very good, very good," he said approvingly. When he tested it, the venom dissolved quickly and left the vial completely dry. "Excellent, Miss St. Clare!" he said.

Finally he tested Remus's potion, half of which was now on the floor. "You added too many caterpillar legs, Mr. Lupin," he said. He tested it, and the venom dissolved, but the potion continued to bubble and it overflowed the vial.

"OK, is there anyone else who hasn't completed the potion yet?"

[Catherine Blustrode]

Catherine HATED doing this sort of work. She put her ingreidents together as it was said in the book and had a moderate reaction to the last ingreident. 'Ho hum' she thought as she cut the heat under her couldron and looked at her watery potion.

[Albus Dumbledore]

Slughorn walked over and checked Catherine's potion. "This looks a bit weak," he said. He tested a drop in his test vial, and it bubbled for a second, dissolving half of the contents. "A good effort, he said, but it needed a bit more caterpillar legs, and possibly a little more bubotuber pus." He gave her a nod, and walked to the front of the room. "OK, I am going to give ten points to Ravenclaw today, 5 for Miss Logan and 5 for Miss St. Clare. This was a good class today, everyone. You are dismissed!"
